BACKGROUND: Several cognitive-behavioral techniques are effective in reducing nightmare frequency, but the therapeutic factor (e.g. cognitive restructuring, systematic desensitization) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the nightmare treatments imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT), exposure, and recording (keeping a diary)--in a self-help format--with a waiting list.
METHODS: Participants were recruited through a Dutch nightmare website. After completion of the baseline questionnaires, 399 participants were randomly assigned to a condition, received a 6-week self-help treatment

In the era of artificial intelligence, synthetic visual content is increasingly produced by generative technologies. An important question is how older adults process and remember such restructured novel objects, and which cognitive and neural factors are associated with successful memory. In two studies, young and older adults completed a restructured object memory task in which objects varied in schema deviation: not restructured (NR), reasonably restructured (RR), and unreasonably restructured (UR). Study 1 showed that schema deviation did not affect young adults' true object memory, wherea

INTRODUCTION: Coping mechanisms and emotional regulation are important contributors to psychosocial health during stressful life events. We sought to describe the coping and emotional responses of persons with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus during the transfer from pediatric to adult healthcare.
METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth one-on-one interviews were conducted with 13 young women aged 18-24 of minority background who had transferred to adult care in a public hospital system. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes motifs from the data.
RESULTS: Participants described

In recent years, clinical trials on transdiagnostic interventions for emotional problems among children and adolescents have steadily increased. There seems to be heterogeneity among these treatment protocols, and currently there is no systematic review of this literature. Therefore, this review aimed at identifying the most frequent treatment elements of transdiagnostic intervention for youths' emotional problems and at describing their implementation characteristics. This scoping review included randomized controlled trials, testing transdiagnostic interventions for emotional problems, deliv

Research suggests that distorted images of the self are common in social phobia and play a role in maintaining the disorder. The images are often linked in thematic and sensory detail to distressing memories that are clustered around the onset or worsening of the disorder. This has led to speculation about the likely benefit of working directly with these memories to improve symptoms of social phobia. In this exploratory study, we describe a process of cognitive restructuring followed by imagery rescripting to update the meanings of distressing memories and images in social phobia. We first pr

In this literature review the new trends of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), namely behavioural activation and rumination-focused cognitive behavioural therapy are introduced as new methods for the treatment of major depression. Component-analytical studies of CBT showed that besides cognitive restructuring, behavioural components play an important role as active treatment factors. Behavioural activation and rumination-focused CBT emphasize these processes. The central idea of behavioural activation is that negative experiences in depression result in secondary avoidant behaviour. Clients

The present paper examines the role of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). A cognitive-behavioral model of SAD is first presented. Different modalities of CBT for SAD are then described, including exposure, cognitive restructuring, relaxation training, and social skills training, and evidence supporting their efficacy is reviewed. The comparative and combined impact of CBT and pharmacotherapeutic interventions is also explored. CBT appears to be an efficacious treatment for SAD. However, the overall efficacy CBT may be increased by closer exami

Insomnia disorder is characterized by disturbed sleep continuity and associated daytime impairment. Insomnia is frequent in patients with psychiatric disorders ; 30-40% fulfill the criteria for insomnia disorder as a comorbidity. According to current guidelines, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment, comprising sleep education, bedtime restriction, relaxation and cognitive restructuring. Despite guideline recommendations, CBT-I is insufficiently implemented, and insomnia is frequently over-treated with hypnotics. 'Become your own SLEEPexpert' is a behavi

BACKGROUND: Family violence is a common problem with direct adverse effects on children as well as indirect effects through disruption of parenting and parent-child relationships. The complex interrelationships between family violence, parenting, and relationships make recovery from psychological responses difficult. In more than half of the families referred to mental health care after family violence, the violence continues. Also, the effect sizes of "golden standard" treatments are generally lower for complex trauma compared to other forms of trauma. In the treatment of complex trauma, trau

Process-based cognitive behavioral therapy (PB-CBT) seeks to identify kernels that are equally efficacious in treating various disorders. While both metacognitive therapy (MCT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) represent evidence-based interventions for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), it remains unclear if there are specific components within each that are comparable in managing meta-worrying characteristic of GAD. A subclinical sample of college students received a brief session targeting a single, personally relevant meta-worry of either metacognitive restructuring as practiced

Purpose The purpose of this review article is to provide an overview of the current evidence base for the behavioral management of stuttering and associated social anxiety. Method We overview recent research about stuttering and social anxiety in the context of contemporary cognitive models of social anxiety disorder. That emerging evidence for self-focused attention and safety behavior use with those who stutter is considered in relation to current treatment approaches for stuttering: speech restructuring and social anxiety management. Results The emerging information about social anxiety and

This pilot study reports the outcome of cognitive behaviour therapy for panic disorder augmented by panic surfing. This treatment approach encourages acceptance of feelings rather than control of symptoms and anxiety, at the same time also targeting catastrophic misinterpretations, bodily vigilance and safety-seeking behaviours. Eighteen participants completed a brief group treatment for panic disorder incorporating psychoeducation, panic surfing, interoceptive exposure, graded exposure and cognitive restructuring. Significant improvements occurred over the course of this treatment and were ma

Choking phobia is characterized by fear and avoidance of swallowing food, fluids or pills. It often appears in women after an episode of choking on food. We present the case of an adolescent beginning her phobia after a mononucleosis with severe dysphagia. Patient's solid restriction raised concerns about differential diagnosis with eating disorders. She was treated with psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring and graduated exposure in vivo, achieving a total recovery.

This study investigated the therapeutic factors influencing the outcome of cognitive behavioral group treatment for social phobia and the most helpful therapeutic component. Fifty psychiatric outpatients who were diagnosed with social phobia according to the DSM-IV criteria were chosen as subjects. Patients were asked to complete the Yalom's Curative Factors Questionnaire and Therapeutic Components Evaluation Form at the end of their Cognitive Behavioral Group Treatment (CBGT). The patients who showed more improvement rated significantly higher in therapeutic factors such as "Interpersonal lea

Extant research has typically examined neighborhood characteristics in isolation using variable-centered approaches; however, there is reason to believe that perceptions of the neighborhood environment influence each other, requiring the use of person-centered approaches to study these relationships. The present study sought to determine profiles of youth that differ in their perceptions of their neighborhoods and objective neighborhood characteristics, and whether these profiles are associated with youth coping. Participants were low-income, African American youth (N= 733; 51.0% female, M age

Clinical distinction between dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) is difficult, while several features might affect the analyses of biomarkers. This study aimed to verify associations of anthropometric and demographic features with cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, their ratios, and restructured traditional regression formulas in patients with DLB and AD, as well as in cognitively healthy controls. Consecutive outpatients with DLB were paired with outpatients with AD according to sex, dementia stage, and cognitive status, and with controls according to sex and

OBJECTIVE: Treatment approaches for pathological gambling have been modelled after preexisting substance addiction models. This paper reviews cognitive-behavioural models in a search for original insights that are specific to gambling treatment.
METHOD: A computerized search of major health care databases (Medline and PsycINFO) was performed.
RESULTS: New cognitive-behavioural approaches to the treatment of pathological gambling provide 3 original additions to the traditional multimodal treatment of addictions: cognitive restructuring, in vivo exposure, and imaginal desensitization. Other co

Reinterpretation and distancing, two cognitive reappraisal tactics, are known to effectively reduce negative feelings and event-related potentials (ERPs), such as the P300 and the late positive potential (LPP), in the short-term. Less is known about differential and lasting effects on ERPs as well as their association with habitual reappraisal. Fifty-seven participants were instructed to passively view or reappraise (reinterpretation, distancing) pictures that were repeatedly presented with the same instruction (active regulation phase). Thirty minutes later, these pictures were shown again wi

In an effort to elucidate the role of cognitive factors in the maintenance of bulimia nervosa, the efficacy of two psychological treatments was examined in a randomised control trial: cognitive behaviour therapy in the absence of explicit exposure instructions was compared with exposure and response prevention treatment in the absence of cognitive restructuring procedures. In the short term both treatments were successful at effecting substantial improvement in both the specific and the non-specific psychopathology of the disorder. However, at a one year follow up, whilst improvements were wel
