Altering the Cognitive-Affective Dysfunctions of Psychopathic and Externalizing Offender Subtypes with Cognitive Remediation.

Cognitive remediation is a treatment approach with the potential to translate basic science into more specific, mechanism-based interventions by targeting particular cognitive skills. The present study translated understanding of two well-defined cognitive-emotion dysfunctions into novel deficit-matched interventions and evaluated whether cognitive remediation would demonstrate specific and generalizable change. Two antisocial-subtypes, individuals with psychopathy and externalizing traits, are characterized by cognitive-affective problems that predispose them to engage in significant substanc

Fidelity in the context of adapting a digital intervention for depression from an evidence-based in-person format in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Digital interventions have emerged as a promising way to better meet growing population mental health needs. Our team developed a digital depression intervention (VMood; smartphone app) in Vietnam. VMood is adapted from an evidence-based in-person intervention (SSM) developed in Canada and uses cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) principles with remote coaching by non-specialist providers. Fidelity-adaptation is a major tension in implementation science. Fidelity is the degree an intervention is designed and delivered as intended. Conversely, adaptations are sometimes made for specif

fNIRS in the developmental sciences.

With the introduction of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) into the experimental setting, developmental scientists have, for the first time, the capacity to investigate the functional activation of the infant brain in awake, engaged participants. The advantages of fNIRS clearly outweigh the limitations, and a description of how this technology is implemented in infant populations is provided. Most fNIRS research falls into one of three content domains: object processing, processing of biologically and socially relevant information, and language development. Within these domains, th

Mild cognitive impairment understanding: an empirical study by data-driven approach.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline has emerged as a significant threat to both public health and personal welfare, and mild cognitive decline/impairment (MCI) can further develop into Dementia/Alzheimer's disease. While treatment of Dementia/Alzheimer's disease can be expensive and ineffective sometimes, the prevention of MCI by identifying modifiable risk factors is a complementary and effective strategy. RESULTS: In this study, based on the data collected by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the nationwide telephone survey, we apply a data-driven approach to re-exam the pr

Sudden glory revisited: cognitive contents of hypomania.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive aspects of hypomania have been historically neglected. Although they do not have an etiological role, they may be essential to understand factors underlying the hypomanic ascent in bipolar disorders and constitute key modulators of the course of illness. METHODS: We have performed a critical review of the existing literature on the role of cognition during hypomania, considering outputs coming from very different fields of knowledge. RESULTS: There is a nuclear cognitive change occurring in most hypomanic phases that we have defined as 'anastrophic' thinking. This key

Methylphenidate as a causal test of translational and basic neural coding hypotheses.

Most systems neuroscience studies fall into one of two categories: basic science work aimed at understanding the relationship between neurons and behavior, or translational work aimed at developing treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders. Here we use these two approaches to inform and enhance each other. Our study both tests hypotheses about basic science neural coding principles and elucidates the neuronal mechanisms underlying clinically relevant behavioral effects of systemically administered methylphenidate (Ritalin). We discovered that orally administered methylphenidate, used clinicall

The specialization of function: cognitive and neural perspectives.

A unifying theme that cuts across all research areas and techniques in the cognitive and brain sciences is whether there is specialization of function at levels of processing that are "abstracted away" from sensory inputs and motor outputs. Any theory that articulates claims about specialization of function in the mind/brain confronts the following types of interrelated questions, each of which carries with it certain theoretical commitments. What methods are appropriate for decomposing complex cognitive and neural processes into their constituent parts? How do cognitive processes map onto neu

Examination of the Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy on Patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This study conducted a meta-analysis to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in patients with an obsessive-compulsive disorder. A meta-analysis is able to evaluate scientifically evidence at the highest level. Studies conducted between 2008 and 2020 were accessed from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and other databases for evaluation and possible inclusion. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy was shown to have a moderate effect (standardized mean difference: 0.283), but this this was enough to indicate a significant reduction in obsessive-compulsive

Comparative efficacy of digital cognitive training regimens on verbal fluency in older adults: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Verbal fluency is a core marker for early cognitive decline in older adults. This study aimed to compare the relative efficacy of different digital cognitive training (DCT) regimens on verbal fluency in older adults, and identify the optimal intervention and moderators. METHODS: A search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO and IEEE Xplore from January 2015 to November 2025, and included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of DCT for verbal fluency in adults aged ≥ 65 years. We conducted pairwise meta-analysis and frequentist network meta-analysis (NMA), with Baye

No-loss gambling shows the speed of the unconscious.

This paper investigates the time it takes unconscious vs. conscious knowledge to form by using an improved "no-loss gambling" method to measure awareness of knowing. Subjects could either bet on a transparently random process or on their grammaticality judgment in an artificial grammar learning task. A conflict in the literature is resolved concerning whether unconscious rather than conscious knowledge is especially fast or slow to form. When guessing (betting on a random process), accuracy was above chance and RTs were longer than when feeling confident (betting on the grammaticality decision

Nutritional interventions for individuals with bulimia nervosa.

Many physical and psychological effects of bulimia nervosa are caused by the patient's partial starvation and chaotic nutritional cycle. Attention should thus be initially directed to correcting nutritional deficiencies and abnormal eating patterns, and providing dietary counselling. Nevertheless, very little has been written about the nutritional management of this eating disorder. Nutritional counselling for bulimia patients is reviewed in this paper. Current knowledge about nutritional therapy and its efficacy, goals and objectives is presented, along with recommendations used in treatment

National Institute on Drug Abuse's behavioral research agenda.

Basic behavioral research continues to play an integral role in the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) search for solutions to the complex social and public health problems posed by drug abuse and addiction. Along with NIDA's basic molecular and neuroscience research programs, behavioral research has played an important role in increasing clinician's understanding of the mechanisms and processes that underlie addiction. Much has been learned about the ways in which animals and humans respond to their environment and the role these basic behavioral processes play in drug abuse and othe

Vision science and schizophrenia research: toward a re-view of the disorder. Editors' introduction to special section.

This theme section on vision science and schizophrenia research demonstrates that our understanding of the disorder could be significantly accelerated by a greater adoption of the methods of vision science. In this introduction, we briefly describe what vision science is, how it has advanced our understanding of schizophrenia, and what challenges and opportunities lay ahead regarding schizophrenia research. We then summarize the articles that follow. These include reviews of abnormal form perception (perceptual organization and backward masking) and motion processing, and an article on reduced

Development and validation of the Science Self-Efficacy Questionnaire to assess the short-term influence of scientists facilitating outreach.

According to Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory, self-efficacy beliefs are shaped by four sources: Mastery Experience, Vicarious Experience, Verbal Persuasion, and Emotional State. Scientists facilitating outreach activities represent a theoretically distinct and underexplored source of Vicarious Experience and Verbal Persuasion for children, yet no validated instrument has assessed their influence on children's science self-efficacy (SSE). This multi-study research developed and validated the Irish Science Self-Efficacy Children's Questionnaire (IS-SEC-Q), the first SSE instrument tailored to

From habits to self-regulation: how do we change?

The Yale Cognitive Science department hosted the conference "From Habits to Self-Regulation: How Do We Change?" on November 4 and 5, 2011, to showcase current research on self-control in cognitive science, psychology, and neuroscience. The conference included a panel discussion by four philosophers who gave context for the scope and limitations of research on self-control. The common theme concerning the best method to attain lasting change included becoming aware of what one wants to change, increasing commitment to the goal of change, and imagining all of the potential problems and solutions
