[Coinfection by mycobacteria in HIV-positive patients].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and therapeutic management of coinfection by mycobacteria in the authors hospital. METHODS: Two cases of coinfection detected in mixed cultures in agar 7H11 or simultaneous positive cultures in several evaluable clinical samples (blood cultures for MAI and M. kansasii and sputum or stools for M. tuberculosis). RESULTS: One coinfection by MAI and M. tuberculosis and another by MAI and M. kansasii in two severely immunosuppressed HIV positive patients with less than 0.010 CD4 lymphocytes/10(9)/l. The clinical manife

Hemotropic mono- and coinfections in Colombian ruminants: descriptive occurrence and host-related factors associated with coinfection in cattle.

Hemotropic pathogens such as Anaplasma, Babesia, Mycoplasma, and Trypanosoma are endemic to cattle and can cause coinfections, complicating disease dynamics and control. However, the host-related factors influencing these infections under tropical conditions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of hemotropic monoinfections and coinfections in ruminants tested for hemotropic pathogens and to identify host-related factors associated with coinfection in cattle under field conditions in Colombia. A total of 104 animals were included: 91 cattle, 10 buffaloes, and

Brucellosis Coinfecting with Liver Hydatid Cyst: Case Report and Literature Review of Zoonoses Coinfection of Human Brucellosis.

Background: Brucellosis is a major global public health problem. Brucellosis usually coinfects with zoonoses because of their similar reservoir and infection routes. Materials and Methods: Here, we present a patient who was diagnosed with coinfecting with liver cyst and brucellosis. Results: A 57-year-old female farmer was hospitalized with right hip joint pain approximately 4 weeks earlier. The patient reported a history of hydatid cysts and a family history of brucellosis. Abdominal computerized tomography and ultrasonography revealed a liver hydatid cyst. The standard agglutination test tit

Inflammasome-associated immune dysregulation in TB-HIV coinfection.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV co-infection are characterized by dysregulated inflammation and increased risk of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) following antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. Inflammasomes are key regulators of innate immune responses, but their role in TB-HIV co-infection and IRIS remains incompletely understood. We investigated inflammasome-related gene expression and cytokine profiles in TB, HIV-1, and TB-HIV individuals, and their association with IRIS development. METHODS: Fifty-nine participants were stratified into four groups: TB-HIV (n =

A Wolbachia coinfection in the common bed bug.

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) relies on an obligate mutualism with the Wolbachia strain wCle to supplement B vitamins deficient in human blood. Using metatranscriptomic and metagenomic sequencing of hospital-collected bed bugs, we found that some individuals also harbor a second strain of Wolbachia (wChem). Using publicly available data we showed that wChem is distributed in bed bugs worldwide at intermediate frequencies and may have moved recently between C. lectularius and Cimex hemipterus, the tropical bed bug, which also feeds on human hosts. We found that wChem encodes a highly e

Dengue and Scrub Typhus Coinfection: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Due to overlapping clinical features, scrub typhus infection may be missed in presence of dengue. Concurrent infection with those two pathogens is rare and creates a diagnostic dilemma. We present a case of a 65-year-old male who was admitted with a high-grade fever and maculopapular rash. A complete hemogram revealed thrombocytopenia with raised hematocrit and positive diagnostic tests for dengue. The patient was treated conservatively with intravenous fluids and antipyretic medications in response to which the hematocrit improved, and the rash disappeared. But fever with thrombocytopenia con

Aspergillus-SARS-CoV-2 Coinfection: What Is Known?

COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) has had a high incidence. In addition, it has been associated with prolonged hospital stays, as well as several predisposing risk factors, such as fungal factors (nosocomial organism, the size of the conidia, and the ability of the Aspergillus spp. of colonizing the respiratory tract), environmental factors (remodeling in hospitals, use of air conditioning and negative pressure in intensive care units), comorbidities, and immunosuppressive therapies. In addition to these factors, SARS-CoV-2 per se is associated with significant dysfunction of

HCV-HIV Chronic Coinfection Prevalence in Amazon Region.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important public health problem, especially in areas with a low human development index such as the Amazon region. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and genotypes of HCV among people living with HIV (PLWH), both neglected chronic diseases in the Amazon region. From March 2016 to June 2017, 433 PWLH were attended to at two sexually transmitted infection referral centers in the city of Belém, in the Brazilian state of Pará in the Amazon region. All individuals were submitted to testing via the rapid immunochromatographic assay (RIA) for the quali

Dengue and COVID-19 Coinfection- A Double Trouble.

COVID 19 since its onset in Wuhan in 2019 has overburdened our existing health resources and infrastructure. Dengue virus has been endemic in Asian countries since decades. Both being viruses with similar clinical profile and overlapping laboratory parameters has posed a great challenge for Asian countries to combat a co epidemic, creating a double burden. We, as clinicians must be more vigilant in diagnosing the patients so that dengue is not missed in this covid pandemic era and does not progress to life threatening dengue shock syndrome. More importantly, we should emphasize on preventive m

Cutaneous schistosomiasis and leishmaniasis coinfection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The polymorphic clinical presentations of schistosomiasis and leishmaniasis allow their inclusion in the differential diagnoses of several conditions. Although an overlap in distribution of these diseases has been reported in endemic areas, coinfection with cutaneous schistosomiasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the same patient is rare. OBJECTIVES: We report an unusual case of concomitant cutaneous schistosomiasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Actions for the management and diagnosis were proposed. METHODS: A patient presented with cutaneous lesions on the abdomen and left elbow

Optimal Control Analysis of Pneumonia and Meningitis Coinfection.

In this paper, we proposed a deterministic model of pneumonia-meningitis coinfection. We used a system of seven ordinary differential equations. Firstly, the qualitative behaviours of the model such as positivity of the solution, existence of the solution, the equilibrium points, basic reproduction number, analysis of equilibrium points, and sensitivity analysis are studied. The disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is kept less than unity, and conditions for global stability are established. Then, the basic model is extended to optimal cont

Visceral leishmaniasis and leishmaniasis-HIV coinfection: comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to draw clinical and epidemiological comparisons between visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and VL associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHOD: Retrospective study. RESULTS: Of 473 cases of VL, 5.5% were coinfected with HIV. The highest proportion of cases of both VL and VL/HIV were found among men. A higher proportion of VL cases was seen in children aged 0-10 years, whereas coinfection was more common in those aged 18-50 years. CONCLUSIONS: VL/HIV coinfected patients presented slightly differently to and had a higher mortality rate than tho

The cursed duet today: Tuberculosis and HIV-coinfection.

The tuberculosis (TB) and HIV syndemic continues to rage and are a major public health concern worldwide. This deadly association raises complexity and represent a significant barrier towards TB elimination. TB continues to be the leading cause of death amongst HIV-infected people. This paper reports the challenges that lay ahead and outlines some of the current and future strategies that may be able to address this co-epidemic efficiently. Improved diagnostics, cheaper and more effective drugs, shorter treatment regimens for both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB are discussed. Also, speci

Visceral Leishmaniasis and HIV coinfection in East Africa.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is an important protozoan opportunistic disease in HIV patients in endemic areas. East Africa is second to the Indian subcontinent in the global VL caseload and first in VL-HIV coinfection rate. Because of the alteration in the disease course, the diagnostic challenges, and the poor treatment responses, VL with HIV coinfection has become a very serious challenge in East Africa today. Field experience with the use of liposomal amphotericin B in combination with miltefosine, followed by secondary prophylaxis and antiretroviral drugs, looks promising. However, this nee

Visceral leishmaniasis and HIV coinfection in Latin America.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an endemic zoonotic disease in Latin America caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum, which is transmitted by sand flies from the genus Lutzomyia. VL occurs in 12 countries of Latin America, with 96% of cases reported in Brazil. Recently, an increase in VL, primarily affecting children and young adults, has been observed in urban areas of Latin America. The area in which this spread of VL is occurring overlaps regions with individuals living with HIV, the number of whom is estimated to be 1.4 million people by the World Health Organization. This overlap is sug

Tuberculosis: burning issues: multidrug resistance and HIV-coinfection.

Tuberculosis is an infection of respiratory tract and Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the causative agent. Multidrug resistance and HIV-coinfection are the burning issues for tuberculosis. The management of drug resistance to tuberculosis is the necessity of the day so by taking effective and controlled measures and giving high doses of 2nd line drugs, we can minimize the death rate in TB. For the HIV-related TB infection, it is necessary to treat TB infection first so that effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy may not be altered and the transmission of M. tuberculosis to other healthy individ
