Effect of different cold acclimation methods on the exercise capacity of mice in low-temperature environments.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different cold acclimation strategies on exercise performance in male mice exposed to low-temperature environments. METHODS: Male mice were subjected to five distinct acclimation regimens over 8 weeks: immersion at 10 °C (10 °CI) or 20 °C (20 °CI), swimming at 10 °C (10 °CS), 20 °C (20 °CS), or 34 °C (34 °CS). During the first 2 weeks, the acclimation time progressively decreased from 30 min to 3 min per day, and the water temperatures were lowered from 34 °C to the target levels, followed by 6 weeks of consistent exposure. Body weight, f

Body size influences the capacity to cope with extreme cold or hot temperatures in the striped hamster.

Body size of organisms is a key trait influencing nearly all aspects of their life history. Despite growing evidence of Bergmann's rule, there is considerably less known about the links between body size and the maximum capacity to thermoregulate of an animal in response to extreme cold or hot environment. Thermal characteristics such as resting metabolic rate (RMR) and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), and the upper- and lower-critical temperatures of the thermal neutral zone (TNZ) were investigated in small and large body sized striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis). The maximum capacity

Prevalence of hypothermia and critical hand temperatures during military cold water immersion training.

Cold-weather military operations can quickly undermine warfighter readiness and performance. Specifically, accidental cold-water immersion (CWI) contributes to rapid body heat loss and impaired motor function. This study evaluated the prevalence of hypothermia and critical hand temperatures during CWI. One-hundred seventeen (N = 117) military personnel (mean ± SD age: 27 ± 6 yr, height: 176 ± 8 cm, weight: 81.5 ± 11.6 kg) completed CWI and rewarming during cold-weather training, which included a 10-min outdoor CWI (1.3 ± 1.4°C) combined with cold air (-4.2 ± 8.5°C) exposure. Following CWI, stu

The Effect of Textiles Impregnated With Particles With High Emissivity in the Far Infrared, on the Temperature of the Cold Hand.

In engineering and medicine, there is a growing interest in using textiles made of composites with enhanced thermal properties. One such type of textile is fabric impregnated with ceramics and mineral particles. This material has high emissivity in the infrared range and may have therapeutic benefits for treatments of diseases, like Raynaud's syndrome. While there is significant clinical and commercial interest, there is an evident lack of fundamental studies on the heat transfer aspects of these fabrics. The goal of this technical brief is to present results from a fundamental study examining

Skin Temperature during Cold Pressor Test in Fibromyalgia: an Evaluation of the Autonomic Nervous System?

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common chronic pain disorder characterized by whole-body pain and multiple symptoms. This study investigated potential dysfunctions of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) in FM patients through the measurement of the autonomic response during a cold-water test. METHODS: 23 female patients with FM and 15 healthy female controls were recruited. First, FM patients filled out the following questionnaires: PainDETECT, American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria of FM, and Profile of Mood States (POMS). Healthy controls only filled out the POMS. Subsequently,

Associations of cold temperatures with GP consultations for respiratory and cardiovascular disease amongst the elderly in London.

BACKGROUND: The relationships between cold temperatures and cardio-respiratory mortality in the elderly are well documented. We wished to determine whether similar relationships exist with consultations in the primary care setting and to assess the lag time at which the effects were observed. METHODS: Generalized additive models were used to regress time-series of daily numbers of general practitioner (GP) consultations by the elderly against temperature, after control for possible confounders and adjustment for overdispersion and serial correlation. Consultation data were available from betw

Impaired regulation of skin temperature in patients with diabetes mellitus evaluated by the cold exposure test.

This study aimed at evaluating vasomotor response of the hand in patients with diabetes mellitus. A skin temperature of the hand was measured before and after exposure to ice water, and the recovery rates of the skin temperature were determined at 3, 5, and 10 min after the cold exposure. Ninety-two diabetics ranging in age from 25 to 59 years and 43 normal subjects ranging from 23 to 69 years old participated in this study. Since the recovery rate was delayed in normal subjects over the age of 60, comparison was made between the diabetics and the normals under 60 years old. The skin temperatu

Trehalose improves cold tolerance of Pediococcus pentosaceus OL77 and enhances low-temperature oat silage fermentation.

Low temperature remains a major bottleneck in silage fermentation, especially in cold regions and high-altitude areas. This study investigated the regulatory role of compatible solutes in enhancing the cold adaptation of Pediococcus pentosaceus OL77 and their synergistic application in oat silage under suboptimal temperatures (5°C-15°C). RT-qPCR analysis showed that expression of the cold shock protein gene CspP was sharply induced at 5°C, indicating its central role in cold-stress response. Exogenous trehalose and betaine significantly downregulated CspP expression, promoted bacterial growth,

Analysis of Factors Associated With Continued Cooling of Core Temperature After Prolonged Cold-Water Swimming.

PURPOSE: To assess the factors associated with continued cooling duration of core temperature (Tcore°) after prolonged outdoor cold-water swimming. METHODS: We designed a cohort study among swimmers participating in an outdoor cold-water swim during qualifying for the English Channel Swim. The day before the event, the participants completed a demographic questionnaire, and body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (mBCA 525, Seca). The swimming event consisted of laps over a 1000-m course, for up to 6 hours, in water at 12.5 to 13 °C. Tcore° was measured using an i

High-Intensity Ultraviolet-C Irradiation Efficiently Inactivates SARS-CoV-2 Under Typical Cold Chain Temperature.

SARS-CoV-2 contaminated items in the cold chain becomes a threat to public health, therefore the effective and safe sterilization method fit for the low temperature is needed. Ultraviolet is an effective sterilization method while its effect on SARS-CoV-2 under low-temperature environment is unclear. In this research, the sterilization effect of high-intensity ultraviolet-C (HIUVC) irradiation against SARS-CoV-2 and Staphylococcus aureus on different carriers at 4 °C and - 20 °C was investigated. The results showed that dose of 15.3 mJ/cm2 achieved more than 3 log reduction of SARS-CoV-2 on ga

Crosstalk between Light- and Temperature-Mediated Processes under Cold and Heat Stress Conditions in Plants.

Extreme temperatures are among the most important stressors limiting plant growth and development. Results indicate that light substantially influences the acclimation processes to both low and high temperatures, and it may affect the level of stress injury. The interaction between light and temperature in the regulation of stress acclimation mechanisms is complex, and both light intensity and spectral composition play an important role. Higher light intensities may lead to overexcitation of the photosynthetic electron transport chain; while different wavelengths may act through different phot

Rectal Instillation of Cold Fluids for Targeted Temperature Management After Cardiac Arrest: A Case Report.

The optimal method of temperature management after cardiac arrest remains unknown. Methods that are most effective are usually invasive and expensive. Noninvasive methods are not as effective and obstruct access to the patient. Temperature management via rectal cooling offers some potential advantages in survivors of cardiac arrest, namely, relatively large volumes of temperature-controlled fluids can be instilled, access to the patient is not obstructed, and fluid overload can be ameliorated by removal of a fraction of instilled fluid. We used rectal cooling in a 72-year-old male comatose sur

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy and repetitive strain injury: temperature and microcirculatory changes following mild cold stress.

Temperature and blood flow studies were performed in the upper limbs of six patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), nine patients with repetitive strain injury (RSI) and 12 control subjects using thermography, laser Doppler flowmetry, infrared photoplethysmography and venous occlusion strain gauge plethysmography. The contralateral responses of the symptomatic and asymptomatic limbs were examined after being subjected, separately, to mild cold stress (20 degrees C for 1 min). Altered thermoregulation and haemodynamics were evident in RSD. Though the pattern of response to contralater

The application of cold-adapted microorganisms in biphenyl biodegradation: Responses and mechanisms to environmental temperature fluctuations.

For the bioremediation of contaminated sites, the efficiency of bioaugmentation depends on the survival capacity of introduced degradative strains in environmental settings. Many isolated strains exhibit poor activity after field application, primarily due to fluctuating environmental conditions, among which diurnal temperature variation represents a significant contributing factor. In this study, cold-adapted bacteria were implemented for biphenyl degradation under realistic environmental temperature fluctuations. The research employed a simplified isolation approach incorporating the limitin

The Presence of Wind Worsens the Effect of Cold Temperature on Time to Ischemia in Patients with Stable Angina.

PURPOSE: This study tested the hypothesis that the combination of cold temperature and wind further reduces time to ischemia during treadmill stress testing compared with cold temperature alone. METHODS: Eighteen participants (56 ± 9 yr) with stable angina performed four treadmill stress tests in a randomized crossover design at +20°C and -8°C, with and without a 24-km·h -1 headwind. Time to ischemia (≥1-mm ST-segment depression) and angina, rate pressure product, and total exercise duration were determined. RESULTS: At -8°C, time to ischemia was reduced by 22% (-58 s (-85 to -31 s), P < 0.0

The effect of exercise-induced elevation in core temperature on cold-induced vasodilatation response in toes.

Cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) has been proposed as a potential protective mechanism against cold injuries during exposure of extremities to a cold environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercise and the associated elevation in core temperature on toe skin temperatures during immersion of the foot in cold (8 degrees C) water. Subjects (N = 8) participated in two trials. In one, they conducted an incremental exercise to exhaustion (exercise) on a cycle ergometer, which was followed by immersion of the right foot in 8 degrees C water. In the second trial (contro

Sensitization to allergens of house-dust mite in adults with atopic dermatitis in a cold temperature region.

BACKGROUND: An IgE-mediated contact reaction to airborne allergens has been suggested as one important pathogenetic mechanism in atopic dermatitis (AD). The house-dust mite (HDM) might be a common allergen involved. In Scandinavia, sensitization to HDM has been rare, probably because of the cold, dry climate. However, recent studies indicate high levels of domestic mites and HDM allergen in 15-20% of homes in central and northern Sweden. METHODS: To evaluate the importance of the HDM in patients with AD in the Stockholm region, we screened 81 adult Stockholm residents with AD, for the prevale
