Successful Pupation of Small Hive Beetle, Aethina tumida (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), in Greenhouse Substrates.

The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, is an invasive pest that has spread globally. Western honey bees, Apis mellifera Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae), are considered the most important host and infestations can lead to collapse of colonies. Larvae feed on honey, pollen, and brood inside the hive and leave the hive as postfeeding wandering larvae to pupate in the surrounding soil. Other host species include bumble bees, stingless bees, and solitary bees, all of which can facilitate small hive beetle reproduction and are used for greenhouse crop pollination worldwide. Here, we investigat

Pulmonary masses in a tuberculin skin test-negative olive baboon.

An adult female olive baboon was shipped to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) from another institution and placed in quarantine. This baboon had been wild-caught approximately 1 year earlier. Initial quarantine examination at UIC revealed tachypnea and an elevated white blood cell count. Intradermal tests for tuberculosis were negative. Radiographs demonstrated increased density, three radiopaque masses in the lung fields, and hepatosplenomegaly. Each differential diagnosis considered had a poor prognosis, and the animal was euthanized and a necropsy performed. At necropsy, five intac

Enhancing caries-affected dentin bonding with a mussel-inspired primer.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is the most common oral disease. In caries-affected dentin (CAD), excessive mineral loss, extensive collagen exposure and collapse, increased enzyme activity, and bacterial residues result in significantly lower resin bonding strength and durability compared to sound dentin (SD). Currently, there are no effective clinical strategies to enhance CAD bonding. Inspired by the excellent wet adhesion capability and collagen affinity of marine mussels, this study aimed to evaluate a mussel-inspired polymerizable monomer (catechol-Lys-methacrylate [CLM]) as a primer to impr

Analysis of Cell Therapies Used in Clinical Trials for the Treatment of Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is associated with regional loss of cells within bone, often resulting in pain and mechanical collapse. Our purpose was to analyze the cell-therapies used in clinical trials for the treatment of ONFH with regard to (1) cell-sources, (2) collection techniques, (3) cell-processing, (4) qualitative and quantitative characterizations, and (5) delivery methods. METHODS: A systematic review of the current literature on the use of cell therapies for the treatment of ONFH was performed. Studies with a level-of-evidence III or higher were evaluated.

Nonresolving Neuroinflammation Regulates Axon Regeneration in Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.

Chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) lesions retain increased densities of microglia and macrophages. In acute SCI, macrophages induce growth cone collapse and facilitate axon retraction away from lesion boundaries. Little is known about the role of sustained inflammation in chronic SCI or whether chronic inflammation affects regeneration. We used the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor inhibitor, PLX-5622, to deplete microglia and macrophages months after complete crush SCI in female mice. Transcriptional analyses revealed a significant inflammatory depletion within chronic SCI lesions after PLX

Paenibacillus encodes a membrane-localized Spo0B.

Sporulation is a strategy employed by many bacteria to survive harsh environmental conditions. The genus Paenibacillus includes spore-forming species notorious for spoiling pasteurized dairy products and for causing American foulbrood in honeybee larvae, leading to colony collapse. Human pathogens within Paenibacillus are also a growing threat, causing fatal opportunistic infections. Here, we present a comprehensive survey of sporulation genes across 1,460 high-quality Paenibacillus genomes. We find that all members of the sporulation-initiating phosphorelay are well conserved, but that the Sp

Jejunal intussusception and small bowel transmural infarction in a baboon (Papio hamadryas anubis).

A 4.3-y-old, colony-bred female baboon (Papio hamadryas anubis) of low social rank and exhibiting no clinically significant signs of illness or distress was found dead at the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center baboon breeding facility at El Reno, OK. Prior to death she exhibited excessive grooming behavior both toward herself and other baboons. In addition, she was consistently shy, timid, reclusive, and prone to minimal sustained movement (that is, generally lethargic behavior). Animals of low social rank typically exhibit some degree of these behaviors in order to avoid surplus inter

Context-dependent promotion of epithelial-mesenchymal transition by IL-13Rα2/STAT6 signaling in colorectal cancer.

The precise mechanistic role of Interleukin-13 receptor alpha-2 (IL-13Rα2) in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains elusive, specifically regarding whether it functions as an active signaling receptor or a passive decoy. Its unique role in metastatic phenotypic plasticity remains poorly understood. We identified IL-13Rα2 as a powerful oncogenic signaling hub that significantly increases CRC cell proliferation, migration, and colony formation using shRNA knockdown and CRISPR activation to modify IL-13Rα2 across a range of CRC cell lines with different baseline characteristics. Most importantly, we fo

Screening biosurfactant-producing actinomycetes: Identification of Streptomyces sp. RP1 as a potent species for bioremediation.

This study aimed to isolate biosurfactant-producing and hydrocarbon-degrading actinomycetes from different soils using glycerol-asparagine and starch-casein media with an antifungal agent. The glycerol-asparagine agar exhibited the highest number of actinomycetes, with a white, low-opacity medium supporting pigment production and high growth. Biosurfactant analyses, such as drop collapse, oil displacement, emulsification, tributyrin agar test, and surface tension measurement, were conducted. Out of 25 positive isolates, seven could utilize both olive oil and black oil for biosurfactant product

Comparative genomics confirms a rare melioidosis human-to-human transmission event and reveals incorrect phylogenomic reconstruction due to polyclonality.

Human-to-human transmission of the melioidosis bacterium, Burkholderia pseudomallei, is exceedingly rare, with only a handful of suspected cases documented to date. Here, we used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to characterize one such unusual B. pseudomallei transmission event, which occurred between a breastfeeding mother with mastitis and her child. Two strains corresponding to multilocus sequence types (STs)-259 and -261 were identified in the mother's sputum from both the primary culture sweep and in purified colonies, confirming an unusual polyclonal infection in this patient. In contrast,

Morphological profiles of cryptorchid XXY mouse testes.

Two mice with an XXY karyotype and cryptorchid testes appeared spontaneously in a colony. The animals were H-Y antigen-positive, and had elevated serum levels of follicle-stimulating (FSH) and luteinizing (LH) hormones. Testes of the affected mice were atrophic, containing a few solid seminiferous cords surrounded by vast amounts of compact interstitial material. The cords were delimited by a broad tunica propria in which the basal lamina was irregularly thickened and stratified into a number of alternating dense and less dense layers. Most sex cords were populated by mature Sertoli cells and

The role of G-CSF neuroprotective effects in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE): current status.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is an important cause of permanent damage to central nervous system (CNS) that may result in neonatal death or manifest later as mental retardation, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, or developmental delay. The primary cause of this condition is systemic hypoxemia and/or reduced cerebral blood flow with long-lasting neurological disabilities and neurodevelopmental impairment in neonates. About 20 to 25% of infants with HIE die in the neonatal period, and 25-30% of survivors are left with permanent neurodevelopmental abnormalities. The mechanisms of hypoxia-ischemi

Ethnic and religious identities in Russian penal institutions: A case study of Uzbek Transnational Muslim prisoners.

Russia has become one of the main migration hubs worldwide following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The vast majority of migrant workers travel to Russia from three Central Asian countries. However, Russian immigration laws and policies are ambiguous and highly punitive. The result is that many migrants resort to undocumented status working in the shadow economy, which places them in a disadvantaged and precarious position. In this position they are vulnerable to becoming targets of the Russian criminal justice system as they take to crime to overcome economic uncertainty, become embroiled

Immune defenses against Legionella pneumophila in rats.

Rats were examined for their susceptibility to infection with Legionella pneumophila. Different strains of L. pneumophila representing serogroups 1 to 4 were tested (Philadelphia 1 and 2, Togus 1, Bloomington 2, Los Angeles 1, and the recently isolated LD-8 from the epidemics in Västeraas, Sweden). When about 9 x 10(8) bacteria, or 6 x 10(8) colony-forming units, were injected intraperitoneally, only rats infected with the LD-8 strain showed signs of illness. They became ill within 4 to 6 h and usually died within 24 h with septicemia and signs of circulatory collapse. Bacteria killed by heati

Analysis of neonicotinoid pesticides and their metabolites by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry.

Neonicotinoid insecticides were first introduced in the 1990s as an alternative to older, more toxic types such as organophosphates, carbamates, and chlorinated hydrocarbons and have since become the most widely used class of insecticides globally. However, their use comes at a significant cost due to high toxicity to pollinators such as bees, beneficial predatory insects, and even insectivorous birds. To further the study of neonicotinoid effects, we developed a method for the LC-ESI-MS/MS (liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry) analysis of imidacloprid, cloth

The epiphytic fungus Pseudozyma aphidis induces jasmonic acid- and salicylic acid/nonexpressor of PR1-independent local and systemic resistance.

Pseudozyma spp. are yeast-like fungi, classified in the Ustilaginales, which are mostly epiphytic or saprophytic and are not pathogenic to plants. Several Pseudozyma species have been reported to exhibit biological activity against powdery mildews. However, previous studies have reported that Pseudozyma aphidis, which can colonize plant surfaces, is not associated with the collapse of powdery mildew colonies. In this report, we describe a novel P. aphidis strain and study its interactions with its plant host and the plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea. This isolate was found to secrete extracellul

Fe(III) Mineral Encrustation Uncouples Respiration from Reproduction of the Nitrate-Reducing Fe(II)-Oxidizing Bacterium Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1.

Fe(II) can be oxidized by mixotrophic nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing (NRFeOx) bacteria to Fe(III), leading to mineral precipitation. However, the effects of this process on the metabolism and reproductive ability of Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterial cells have not yet been quantified. In this study, we investigated the effects of Fe(II) on the mixotrophic NRFeOx bacteria Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1 by performing cell plate counts, chemical analyses, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, live/dead fluorescence staining, and proteomic analysis. The results showed that nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizi

Air sac trematodes: Morishitium polonicum as a newly identified cause of death in the common blackbird (Turdus merula).

Necropsy of two free-ranging common blackbirds (Turdus merula) found dead in central Italy revealed the presence of a high number of cyclocoelid flukes in the coelomatic cavity. Cyclocoelid flukes primarily infect avian respiratory system. Histologically, air sac walls were covered with a fibrinous exudate containing degenerate heterophils, many trematodes and some colonies of Gram-positive cocci. The superficial bronchi and parabronchi were markedly distended, and the adjacent pulmonary parenchyma was congested and collapsed.
