Behavioral and neuroimaging evidence for a contribution of color and texture information to scene classification in a patient with visual form agnosia.

A common notion is that object perception is a necessary precursor to scene perception. Behavioral evidence suggests, however, that scene perception can operate independently of object perception. Further, neuroimaging has revealed a specialized human cortical area for viewing scenes that is anatomically distinct from areas activated by viewing objects. Here we show that an individual with visual form agnosia, D.F., who has a profound deficit in object recognition but spared color and visual texture perception, could still classify scenes and that she was fastest when the scenes were presented

Color vision.

Color vision has been studied for centuries, but many fundamental questions remain about the nature of color perception and its neural underpinnings. Typical human color vision is trichromatic - based on three types of cone receptors - yet manifests in a wide variety of individual variations. Similarly, the processing of the cone signals depends on opponent mechanisms that compare the signals from different cone classes. However, the types of comparisons and how they ultimately relate to color appearance or different perceptual tasks are still shrouded in mystery. This review focuses on the pr

Negative hysteresis occurs in simple color matching but such serial dependence effects are abolished by perceptual binding.

Color perception entails multiple processing levels. Perceptual dynamics in color vision and the role of stimulus history can be studied using the phenomenon of hysteresis, well-known in the framework of physical dynamical systems. In perceptual hysteresis paradigms, stimuli change gradually, leading to competition between perceptual stabilization (positive hysteresis) or early change to an alternative percept (negative hysteresis). The former dominates in most perceptual domains, such as motion, letter or emotion recognition. The question remains whether positive hysteresis dominates in color

Evaluation of color vision related quality of life changes due to cataract surgery.

Questionnaires have been used as research tools to provide a standardized approach to assess quality of life at various time periods and populations. However, literature shows only a few articles about self-reported color vision changes. Our aim was to evaluate the subjective patient feelings before and after cataract surgery and compare the results with a color vision test result. Our method was as follows: 80 cataract patients filled out a modified color vision questionnaire and performed the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Color Vision Test (FM100) before, two weeks, and six months after catarac

[Changes in the subjective perception of daylight (author's transl)].

It is pointed out that the basic model of "artificial daylight" in the open is not appropriate for reading and writing. Man has become accustomed to reading with daylight coming from the side through a window. Daylight indoors differs from daylight outfoord through a yellowish tendency, to which the human eye is accustomed in the presence of the usual light intensity indoors. Fluorescent "daylight" or "neutral white" lights are therefore experienced by the human eye as too blue and should only be used for special purposes with very high luminous intensities. Daylight unfortunately cannot yet b

Color vision and occupational chemical exposures: I. An overview of tests and effects.

The paper presents a summary of the literature published until December 2000 on effects from some industrial chemical exposures on color perception, as well as short descriptions of the tests applied. Several different tests have been used to study acquired alterations of color vision. These changes are frequently found in the blue-yellow axis. Many of the tests were originally designed to detect congenital alterations in the red-green axis, and thus have relatively low sensitivity when studying chemically induced deficits in color perception. At present, the Lanthony D15-desaturated panel see

Visualization of IOL Material-Induced Changes in Retinal Color Stimulus.

Purpose. Different IOL materials, particularly blue-light filtering materials, have different spectral transmittance characteristics. The color stimuli, which influence retinal receptors objectively, have consequently implications for color perception. We report on the quantitative determination of IOL-specific transmittance characteristics and present a method visualizing the resultant changes in color stimulus. Methods. A setup was realized to quantify IOL-absorption in a range of 390-780 nm. To visualize the influence of the different spectral transmittance characteristics an algorithm was

Behavioral deficits and cortical damage loci in cerebral achromatopsia.

Lesions to ventral occipital cortex can produce severe deficits in color vision, a syndrome known as cerebral achromatopsia. Because most studies examine relatively few cases, however, uncertainty remains about precisely which cortical loci, when damaged, produce the syndrome. In addition, the extents of the associated perceptual deficits remain unclear. To address these issues, we performed a meta-analysis of 92 case reports from the literature. The severity of color vision deficits of the cases varied greatly, although nearly all showed some deficit in color discrimination. Almost all cases

Big picture vs. small details: exploring how front-of-package labels influence healthy food consumption and cognitive processing.

BACKGROUND: Front-of-package labeling (FoPL) has been increasingly implemented as a public health nutrition strategy to promote healthier dietary choices and reduce the burden of diet-related chronic diseases. However, the effectiveness of different FoPL formats and the cognitive pathways associated with consumers' food perceptions and choices remain unclear. This study aimed to examine how different FoPL types influence consumers' health perceptions, food choices, and cognitive pathway patterns. METHODS: Two experimental studies were conducted. Study 1 employed a 2 × 2 between-subjects onlin

Anomalous Auditory Cortex Activations in Colored Hearing Synaesthetes: An fMRI-Study.

Color percept induction in synaesthetes by hearing words was previously shown to involve activation of visual and specifically color processing cortex areas. While this provides a rationale for the origin of the anomalous color percept the question of mechanism of this crossmodal activation remains unclear. We pursued this question with fMRI in color hearing synaesthetes by exposing subjects to words and tones. Brain activations in word condition accompanied by highly reliable color percepts were compared with activations in tone condition with only occasional color percepts and both contraste

Influence of Multi-Cue Interaction on Human Depth Perception in Three-Dimensional Space.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread application of three-dimensional (3D) display technology, enhancing the realism of users' experience in virtual 3D space has become important. A deep understanding of the mechanisms of human depth perception is therefore crucial. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the influence of motion parallax, color, and object position cues on depth perception in 3D space. METHOD: Random-dot stereograms based on binocular disparity cues were constructed; three experiments were designed, varying the stimulus movement speed, color, and position; two-alternative force

Priming of pop-out on multiple time scales during visual search.

When target-color repeats in pop-out visual search performance is faster than otherwise. While various characteristics of such priming of pop-out (PoP) are well known, relatively little is known about the temporal character of the memory traces underlying the effect. Recent findings on the perception of ambiguous stimuli show that the percept at any given moment is affected by perception over a long period, as well as by immediately preceding percepts. Intrigued by the existence of various parallels between this perceptual priming phenomenon and PoP, we here investigate whether similar multipl

Color "amnesia" without aphasia.

Following an apparent left parietal CVA, a patient developed a severe and nearly complete color amnesia which was not associated with any disturbance in color vision or color perception. Like all previously reported cases with color amnesia, this patient was alexic but, unlike most previously reported cases, he was not aphasic.

Projector radiometric compensation using a 2D spectroradiometer.

Projection mapping (PM) optically overlays computer-generated imagery onto real-world objects, enabling users to experience augmented reality without wearing any display devices. However, surface textures often cause color distortion, leading the displayed colors to deviate from the desired colors. To address this issue, we propose a projector radiometric compensation method that minimizes the color difference between a target image and the projected result using a 2D spectroradiometer (2DSR). In the proposed method, we model the color transformation between the projector and the 2DSR in a dif

Visualizing Visual Adaptation.

Many techniques have been developed to visualize how an image would appear to an individual with a different visual sensitivity: e.g., because of optical or age differences, or a color deficiency or disease. This protocol describes a technique for incorporating sensory adaptation into the simulations. The protocol is illustrated with the example of color vision, but is generally applicable to any form of visual adaptation. The protocol uses a simple model of human color vision based on standard and plausible assumptions about the retinal and cortical mechanisms encoding color and how these adj
