Infantile hemangiopericytoma of the tongue-Efficacy of ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure and combined-modality therapy.

Here we present an extremely rare case of giant infantile hemangiopericytoma (HPC) of the tongue diagnosed prenatally by fetal ultrasonography and MR imaging. Due to airway stenosis, the patient was delivered by the ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure at 36 weeks of pregnancy. Initial diagnosis was infantile hemangioma based on physical examination, diagnostic imaging and the high incidence of hemangioma. The tumor was resistant to conservative treatments. Due to severe tumor hemorrhage, the nutrient vessel was embolized by endovascular treatment on the 73th day after birth. Two da

[Possibilities of using the biofeedback method in the combined modality therapy of patients with bronchial asthma].

The efficacy of biological feedback was studied in multimodality treatment of patients suffering from bronchial asthma. Use was made of a device modified by the authors themselves. In that device, the system of the patient's respiration control was synchronized with the block of diaphragmatic pacing. The method was shown to be highly effective. The clinical status of the patients improved. The changes in the capnographic parameters attest to a decrease of hyperventilation in patients suffering from bronchial asthma.

Combined modality therapy for HIV-infected patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anus: outcomes and toxicities.

PURPOSE: We report toxicity and survival data of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men with anal carcinoma treated with combined modality therapy (CMT) of radiotherapy and concurrent chemotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective review was performed on the records of 17 HIV-positive patients with anal squamous cell carcinoma treated with CMT at our institution between 1991 and 2004. Radiotherapy consisted of 30.6 to 45 Gy to the pelvis, total dose of 50.4 to 59.4 Gy to initial gross disease, at 1.8 Gy/fraction. Chemotherapy consisted of 5-fluorouracil and either mitomycin C o

Rate of pathologic complete response with increased interval between preoperative combined modality therapy and rectal cancer resection.

INTRODUCTION: Recent data suggest a favorable prognosis for rectal cancer patients with a pathologic complete response to preoperative combined modality therapy. Prolongation of the interval between preoperative combined modality therapy and surgery (RT-surgery interval) as a means of increasing pathologic complete response rate has not been fully examined. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-five rectal cancer patients undergoing preoperative pelvic external beam radiation therapy and 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy followed by rectal resection were identified. All patients had endorectal ultra

Nonoperative therapies for combined modality treatment of hepatocellular cancer: expert consensus statement.

Although surgical resection and liver transplantation are the only treatment modalities that enable prolonged survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the majority of HCC patients presents with advanced disease and do not undergo resective or ablative therapy. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is indicated in intermediate/advanced stage unresectable HCC even in the setting of portal vein involvement (excluding main portal vein). Sorafenib has been shown to improve survival of patients with advanced HCC in two controlled randomized trials. Yttrium 90 is a safe microemboliz

Efficacy of combined modality conversion therapy for HCC with portal vein tumor thrombus: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) patients with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) have a substandard prognosis. This study elucidated whether conversion therapy can alleviate unresectable tumors and increase the rate of salvage hepatectomy, as well as identify predictors of better prognosis. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 159 patients with uHCC and PVTT who underwent conversion therapy, predominantly combining systemic treatments with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Primary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Sec

The Evolution in the Cutaneous and Gastrointestinal Pathology of Pediatric Kohlmeier-Degos Disease Under Combined Modality Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Kohlmeier-Degos disease is a potentially severe multiorgan thrombotic vascular injury syndrome with characteristic cutaneous lesions characterized by depressed porcelain white plaques with telangiectatic rims. This occlusive vasculopathy involves the microvasculature but also extends to affect arterioles and small arteries where a peculiar intravascular and intimal fibrosing reaction occurs. We discovered in earlier studies that complement pathway activation and enhanced type I interferon signaling are held to be a critical impetus for the endothelial cell injury. Significant upreg

Complete remission of metastatic osteosarcoma using combined modality therapy: a retrospective analysis of unselected patients in China.

BACKGROUND: Complete surgical remission (CSR) is the best predictor of overall survival (OS) for patients with metastatic osteosarcoma. However, metastasectomy has not been widely implemented in China in the last decade due to various factors, and instead, most physicians choose hypofractionated radiotherapy to treat pulmonary lesions. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the outcomes of different local treatments for pulmonary lesions and identify the best local therapy strategies for these patients. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical courses of osteosarcoma patients with pulmonary me

Association of Combined Modality Therapy vs Chemotherapy Alone With Overall Survival in Early-Stage Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma.

IMPORTANCE: To date, there is no well-defined standard of care for early-stage pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), which may include chemotherapy alone or combined modality therapy (CMT) with chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. Although the use of radiotherapy in pediatric HL is decreasing, this strategy remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To examine the use of CMT in pediatric HL and its association with improved overall survival using data from a large cancer registry. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This observational cohort study used data from the National Cancer Database to evaluate c

[A Case of Combined Modality Therapy for a Cervical Lymph Node Recurrence after Surgery for Esophageal Cancer].

In the present report, we describe a man with type 2 progressive squamous cell carcinoma (cT3N1M0, cStage Ⅲ) that was detected in the esophago-gastric junction during follow-up after ESD for early gastric cancer. We performed a middle inferior part esophagectomy, a 2-region dissection, and a posterior mediastinum gastric tube reconstruction after preoperative chemotherapy (docetaxel plus cisplatin plus 5-FU). The patient only received 1 course of preoperative chemotherapy because of neutropenia. The pathology results were pT3N2M0, pStage Ⅲ. Six months later, we started chemotherapy (nedaplatin

[A case of long-term survival due to combined modality therapy for liver metastasis of colon cancer].

The patient was a 68-year-old man. Because sigmoid colon cancer and metastatic liver cancer was diagnosed in August 2009, an indwelling central venous port and sigmoid colon resection were implemented. The metastatic liver cancer was a huge tumor occupying the right hepatic lobe and caudate lobe. In consideration of the risk associated with the resection and the possibility of early recurrence, the postoperative chemotherapy was selected. He underwent 9 courses of bevacizumab (Bev)+FOLFOX. The tumor was observed to reduce but continued to occupy the right lobe and caudate lobe. At this point,

[A Case of Locally Advanced Thoracic Esophageal Cancer with Larynx Preservation and Curative Resection via Combined Modality Therapy].

Prognosis of locally advanced esophageal cancer is poor. The greatest prognostic factor of locally advanced esophageal cancer is a local control. We experienced a case of T4 locally advanced thoracic esophageal cancer who was successfully resected without any combined resection after multimodality therapy. A male in 75-year-old. was diagnosed with type 3 locally advanced upper thoracic esophageal cancer whose metastatic right recurrent laryngeal lymph node invaded into the trachea. Definitive chemoradiation therapy(CRT)was performed, leading to a significant shrinkage of the main tumor, but T4

[Successful Combined Modality Therapy for an Advanced Malignant Mediastinal Non-seminomatous Germ Cell Tumor in an Elderly Female].

A 69-year-old woman was diagnosed with a germ cell tumor in the anterior mediastinum. Following 3 years follow-up, she experienced chest pain and an enlarging of the anterior mediastinal tumor and bilateral lung metastases were detected by chest X-ray. The tumor was diagnosed as a primary malignant mediastinal non-seminomatous germ cell tumor by needle biopsy. After initial radiotherapy (12 Gy/4 Fr), she was subsequently treated with EP chemotherapy which achieved a partial response. Complete resection of the residual tumors in the mediastinum and right lung was performed. No recurrence has be

A real-world study of combined modality therapy for early-stage Hodgkin lymphoma: too little treatment impacts outcome.

Multiple clinical trials have assessed de-escalation strategies from combined modality therapy (CMT) to chemotherapy-alone for the treatment of early-stage classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), confirming similar outcomes. The application of these data to the real-world is limited, however. We conducted a retrospective, multicenter cohort study comparing CMT vs chemotherapy-alone in patients with early-stage cHL (stage IA-IIB) treated between January 2010 and December 2020. Positron emission tomography (PET) scans after chemotherapy cycle 2 (PET2) were independently reviewed by a nuclear radiologi

[A case of stage IVb small cell carcinoma of the esophagus obtained prolonged survival after combined modality therapy].

Small cell carcinoma of the esophagus is a relatively rare disease, and its prognosis is quite poor, because of its rapid progression. A 76-year-old female visited our hospital with the complaint of a poor appetite. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examination(GIS)revealed an ulcerated lesion in the lower portion of the thoracic esophagus, and we diagnosed small cell carcinoma by a biopsy specimen. A computer tomography scan revealed solitary liver metastasis, and lymph node swelling on the left side of the superior mesenteric artery. So, we started chemotherapy with VP-16 and CDDP, according
