Terminalia catappa L. belonging to Combretaceae family is a folk medicine, known for its multiple pharmacological properties, but the neuro-modulatory effect of TC against chronic mild stress was seldom explored. The present study was designed to elucidate potential antidepressant-like effect of Terminalia cattapa (leaf) hydro-alcoholic extract (TC) by using CMS model for a period of 7 weeks. Identification of hydrolysable tannins was done by using LC-MS. After the CMS exposure, mice groups were administered with imipramine (IMP, 10mg/kg, i.p.) and TC (25, 50 and 100mg/kg of TC, p.o.). Behavio

Arjunolic acid (AA) obtained from plants of the Combretaceae family has shown anti-diabetic effects. Here, we analyzed whether the diabetogenic effects of dexamethasone (DEX) treatment on glucose homeostasis may be prevented or attenuated by the concomitant administration of AA. Adult Wistar rats were assigned to the following groups: vehicle-treated (Ctl), DEX-treated (1 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally for 5 days) (Dex), AA-treated (30 mg/kg body weight by oral gavage twice per day) (Aa), AA treatment previous to and concomitant to DEX treatment (AaDex), and AA treatment after initiation

BACKGROUND: The bark of Terminalia arjuna L. (Combretaceae) is used in Ayurveda since ancient times for the treatment of cardiac disorders. Previous laboratory investigations have demonstrated the use of the bark in cardiovascular complications. The present study was aimed to find the effect of 70% alcoholic extract of Terminalia arjuna on anaesthetized dog blood pressure and probable site of action.
METHODS: Six dogs were anaesthetized with intraperitoneal injection of thiopental sodium and the blood pressure of each dog (n = 6) was measured from the left common carotid artery connected to a

Behavioral effects of the aqueous extract of Guiera senegalensis on the central nervous system of mice and rats were investigated. Spontaneous motor activity, pentobarbital sleeping time, amphetamine-stereotyped behavior, exploratory activity and performance on treadmills (rota-rod) were evaluated. The results revealed that the aqueous extract of G. senegalensis reduced spontaneous motor activity in mice, prolonged the duration of pentobarbital sleeping time in rats and attenuated amphetamine-induced stereotype behavior in rats. The extract also decreased exploratory activity in mice and had n

BACKGROUND: Anogeissus latifolia Roxb. (Family: Combretaceae) is an Indian medicinal plant. The bark of the plant is used traditionally in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for the treatment of pain, inflammation, and arthritis. The objective of this study was to investigate the protective effects of ethanol extract of the stem bark of Anogeissus latifolia Roxb. (EAL) in osteoarthritis-induced rats, to verify its use in traditional medicine and contribute to the understanding of its ethnopharmacological importance. METHODS: Osteoarthritis was induced by injecting 3 mg of monosodium iodoacetate

Human African trypanosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease with complex clinical presentation, diagnosis, and difficult treatment. The available drugs for the treatment of trypanosomiasis are old, expensive, and less effective, associated with severe adverse reactions and face the problem of drug resistance. This situation underlines the urgent need for the development of new, effective, cheap, and safe drugs for the treatment of trypanosomiasis. The search for new antitrypanosomal agents in this study is based on ethnomedicine. In vitro antitrypanosomal activity of 36 plant extracts from 1

Terminalia catappa L. (Family: Combretaceae) is used globally to treat various diseases, including bacterial infections. Whilst the antibacterial activity of T. catappa has previously been tested against antibiotic-sensitive bacterial strains, the antimicrobial activity against methicillin and β-lactam-resistant pathogens has been relatively ignored. The antibacterial activity of T. catappa extracts, both alone and combined with selected clinical antibiotics, was evaluated in this study. The inhibition of bacterial growth by the extracts was determined using agar diffusion and broth micro-dilu

Ellagitannins constitute the largest group of hydrolyzable tannins of plants, and, from this group, casuarictin (Casu) was identified in some plant species. However, to our knowledge, no investigation of secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) inhibition by Casu has been performed yet. Casuarictin was isolated by chromatography n-butanol (n-BuOH) partition of Laguncularia racemosa leaves. The pharmacological and biological effects of Casu were evaluated on isolated sPLA2 from the rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus) and using a plant bacterial strain. The compound was able to form a protein c

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The dried fruit of Terminalia chebula Retz. (Combretaceae) has been traditionally used for gout and hyperuricemia (HUA) across Tibetan, Ayurvedic, and Chinese medicine. Although its extracts have demonstrated anti-hyperuricemic effects, the specific bioactive constituents targeting xanthine oxidase (XOD), the key enzyme in uric acid biosynthesis, have not been identified.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to identify the specific XOD inhibitory constituents from T. chebula fruit, characterize their inhibitory mechanisms at the molecular level, and validate the

The current study was designed to check the antioxidant and enzyme inhibition potential of various extracts/ fractions of three selected plants. The aerial parts of Conocarpus erectus (Combretaceae), Ficus variegata (Moraceae) and Ficus maclellandii (Moraceae) were extracted with ethanol (95%) and the resulting crude extracts were partitioned with n-hexane, chloroform and n-butanol successively. Folin-Ciocalteu reagent was used to calculate the total phenolic contents, flavonoids contents were calculated with aluminum chloride while antioxidant and enzyme studies were carried out through stand

Stem and bark of the tree Terminalia arjuna Wight & Arn. (Combretaceae) has been documented to exhibit therapeutic properties like cardiotonic, anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, hypercholesterolemia, hypolipidemic, and anti-coagulant. Our previous studies have shown that, ethanolic extract of T. arjuna bark exhibits radical scavenging anti-oxidant activity and also effectively inhibited catalase activity. In this study, oleanane triterpenoids type compounds viz., oleanolic acid, arjunolic acid, arjunolitin, arjunetin were isolated from ethanolic bark extract as bio-active compo
