Pathogen Lists Do Not Tell Us What We Need to Do.

Brett-Major and others remind us that pathogen lists for emerging infectious diseases aid in the development of tools that target specific pathogens (e.g., vaccines) and help attract financial support. These lists tell us what we need to have, not what we need to do. The authors call for more research on ways to prevent these diseases (e.g., platform technologies for vaccines) and mitigate disease impact. Vaccines and new treatments that target individual pathogens have many limitations. However, we might save lives by treating patients with inexpensive generic drugs that target common feature

[Emergent infectious diseases: importance for public health, epidemiology, promoting factors, and prevention].

At the end of the 70s, it was said that eradicating infectious diseases was possible. With the occurrence of AIDS and the discovery of new pathogens the come-back of infectious diseases was noted, 15 to 20 years later, and the concept of emerging infections was defined. An emerging infection is the appearance of a new infection or the increase of its incidence if not new. It also includes infections for which the incidence could increase because of favorable conditions. Several scenarios can be proposed: 1) the appearance of a new infection (AIDS or SARS); 2) the appearance of a known infectio

Emerging infections in animals--potential new zoonoses?

It is well recognized that most emerging diseases of humans are zoonotic, and that the forces working to create emerging diseases in humans are also operating in animal populations. However, what is often overlooked is that emerging human diseases are usually preceded by the emergence of the same pathogen in an animal population. In fact, the developing disease in animals acts as a link allowing the disease to take hold and wreck havoc in public health. Numerous examples--Rift Valley fever, monkeypox, Nipah, and Ebola--serve to underscore this linkage and to highlight the increasing interconne

[Emerging bacterial zoonoses].

Different zoonoses whose etiologic agents were previously unknown have been identified in recent years as a result of new diagnostic techniques in molecular biology and improved epidemiological surveillance systems. Several factors have facilitated the emergence of new diseases and the reemergence of already known diseases, which were thought to be under control. They include the following: (1) environmental changes, such as deforestation and droughts, which allow etiologic agents and their vectors to thrive, (2) industrial food production for widespread consumption, which allows disease agent

Beyond canonical inflammasomes: emerging pathways in IL-1-mediated autoinflammatory disease.

In recent years, non-communicable chronic diseases that are potentiated by sterile inflammation have replaced infectious diseases as the major threat to human health. Sterile inflammation that results from aberrant tissue damage plays pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of numerous acute and chronic inflammatory diseases including atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, and multiple neurodegenerative diseases. The cellular events and molecular signaling pathways that govern sterile inflammation currently remain poorly defined; however, emerging data suggest central roles for IL-1 in d

Newer and emerging sexually transmitted infections: A narrative review.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including traditionally curable diseases like syphilis and gonorrhoea, have seen a recent resurgence. Concurrently, newer atypical infections presenting as STIs have emerged, driven by changes in pathogen virulence, host behaviours, and environmental factors. The spectrum of STIs is expanding due to evolving behaviours, globalisation, and pathogen adaptability. This review aims to highlight key viral, bacterial, fungal, and enteric infections that are newly identified or increasingly transmitted through sexual contact, introducing the concept of sexually

Trends in Emergency Department utilization by disease categories in a migrant-dense high-income setting: a retrospective study in Dubai, 2021-2025.

BACKGROUND: Global health systems are increasingly challenged by shifting patterns of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, and injuries. While these patterns have been widely studied in low- and middle-income settings, there is limited evidence describing how they manifest in emergency department utilization within high-income, migrant-dense contexts such as Dubai. This study aimed to examine temporal trends in emergency department utilization by disease categories and their demographic and clinical correlations in Dubai, UAE, from 2021 to 2025. METHODS: A retrospective observati

Global Mpox spread due to increased air travel.

Mpox is an emerging, infectious disease that has caused outbreaks in at least 91 countries from May to August 2022. We assessed the link between international air travel patterns and Mpox transmission risk, and the relationship between the translocation of Mpox and human mobility dynamics after travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic had been lifted. Our three novel observations were that: i) more people traveled internationally after the removal of travel restrictions in the summer of 2022 compared to pre-pandemic levels; ii) countries with a high concentration of global air travel h

Strengthening Regional Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases in the Greater Mekong Subregion of Southeast Asia: Four Decades of Diagnostics, Surveillance, Field Epidemiology, and Policy Translation.

Transboundary animal and emerging infectious diseases (TADs, EIDs) threaten livestock health and production, food security, and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Southeast Asia (SEA). Outbreaks of TADs, including foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), classical swine fever (CSF), African swine fever (ASF), and lumpy skin disease (LSD), highlight ongoing risks associated with informal animal movement and cross-border trade. We reviewed four decades of research from Thailand, Lao PDR, and Cambodia in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) to track the evolution of diagnostics, surveillance, and polic

T. indotineae: A New Emergent Fungal Pathogen Driven by Global Travel.

BACKGROUND: The global spread of Trichophyton indotineae, a multidrug-resistant dermatophyte, remains insufficiently understood due to limited data on migration-associated dissemination and emerging local transmission. This study reviewed available evidence and integrated international migration statistics to assess the worldwide distribution of this pathogen and the influence of human mobility on its expansion. METHODS: A systematic search in Scopus and PubMed (September 9, 2025) included epidemiological studies, case reports, and letters. Extracted variables comprised country of diagnosis,

[One Health: Re-thinking of zoonoses control].

Under the dual pressure of emerging zoonoses and the difficulty in eliminating conventional zoonoses, many uncertainties in global control of infectious diseases are challenging the achievement of sustainable development goals set by the United Nations General Assembly. One Health, developed on the basis of understanding the relationship between human diseases and animal diseases, is conducive to the prevention and control of zoonoses. The connotation of "One Health" is mainly explained by three aspects, namely the systems thinking mode of "unity of environment and man", the practice guidance

Infectious disease emergencies: role of the infectious disease specialist.

The importance of infections for public health has become obvious during the last decades. Examples are emerging infections such as HIV/AIDS and severe acute respiratory syndrome, deliberate release of microorganisms, such as the anthrax episode in the USA, the increasing problems with organisms resistant to antimicrobial treatment, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and the threat of a new influenza pandemic with a case fatality rate similar to that in the 1918 outbreak. An effective response to infectious disease emergencies requires careful planning and establishment of re

Encapsulating the burden and social determinants of self-reported general health problems among a specific sub-group of transgender women in Dhaka, Bangladesh: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh and other resource-constrained settings, a sub-group of transgender women (predominantly known as hijra in South Asia) encounter systemic marginalization, which unfairly predisposes them to health disadvantages. Although studies are beginning to illuminate the emerging burden of various communicable and non-communicable diseases, the global scholarship has predominantly confined these marginalized people within HIV/STI research framework. Our study explored the burden of diverse self-reported health problems and their underlying contexts among hijra in Dhaka, Banglade

Assessing Trainee Needs for Developing Response Scenarios and Training Manuals for Unknown Infectious Diseases: Insights From a Focus Group Interview.

This study employed focus group interviews (FGIs) to evaluate the preparedness and training requirements for an emerging infectious disease response system in the Republic of Korea. Based on the FGIs, the critical role of interdepartmental cooperation in responding to emerging infectious diseases was identified, with agencies such as public health centers, police, and fire services playing key roles in scene control, decontamination, and patient transport. Frequent staff turnover and a lack of trained personnel at local government levels were significant challenges, necessitating the developme

Landscape of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in China: impact of ecology, climate, and behavior.

For the past several decades, the infectious disease profile in China has been shifting with rapid developments in social and economic aspects, environment, quality of food, water, housing, and public health infrastructure. Notably, 5 notifiable infectious diseases have been almost eradicated, and the incidence of 18 additional notifiable infectious diseases has been significantly reduced. Unexpectedly, the incidence of over 10 notifiable infectious diseases, including HIV, brucellosis, syphilis, and dengue fever, has been increasing. Nevertheless, frequent infectious disease outbreaks/events

[Syndromic surveillance for the detection of outbreaks of unusual infectious diseases].

Syndromic surveillance has been developed in order to detect outbreaks of unusual infectious diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) or anthrax at an early stage. Whereas the usual surveillance systems are based on established diagnoses and emergency department discharge data, syndromic surveillance uses preliminary outcomes and derived data such as absenteeism, prescription medication and requests for laboratory tests. Investigations abroad have indicated the potential ofsyndromic surveillance. In the Netherlands, the National Institute of Public Health and Environment (RIVM

Sustained Reductions in Online Search Interest for Communicable Eye and Other Conditions During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: In a prior study at the start of the pandemic, we reported reduced numbers of Google searches for the term "conjunctivitis" in the United States in March and April 2020 compared with prior years. As one explanation, we conjectured that reduced information-seeking may have resulted from social distancing reducing contagious conjunctivitis cases. Here, after 1 year of continued implementation of social distancing, we asked if there have been persistent reductions in searches for "conjunctivitis," and similarly for other communicable disease terms, compared to control terms.
