Communicating with Community: Using Geographic Information Systems to Convey the Impacts of Extreme Heat in Los Angeles Environmental Justice Communities.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related event in the United States, but it is not regarded with the same urgency as other natural disasters. By 2050, Los Angeles is expected to experience about three times as many extreme heat days compared to today, which will likely disproportionately affect environmental justice communities. One barrier to mitigating heat-related vulnerability in frontline communities is a lack of awareness of available resources and adaptation strategies. METHODS: The Prioritizing Local Action for Climate Equity (PLACE) study aims to bridge this knowle

Prevalence of hypertension in community members in a low-income community in Windhoek, Namibia.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension remains a significant risk factor for the development of several non-communicable diseases such as stroke, myocardial infarction and renal failure. In many African countries, undiagnosed and unmanaged hypertension within the population remains a challenge. Proactive screening and health education therefore become important interventions. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hypertension among community members in a low-income, peri-urban community. SETTING: The study was conducted in Otjomuise township, Windhoek, Namibia. METHODS: A quantitative, c

Developing Compassionate Community: Insights from the International Standards for Community Development.

Aging populations have increased demand for hospice palliative care and support for dying persons. More broadly, community support is also becoming an increasingly important aspect of public health intervention. Compassionate communities advocate active bottom-up community participation to strengthen communities' assets around death and dying. However, these rapidly growing initiatives face a challenge in putting values such as cultural diversity, relationship, and love into practice and in making a social impact through "meaningful participation" at the community level. Reflecting on our expe

Optimizing Communication in Ataxia: A Multifaceted Approach to Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC).

The progression of multisystem neurodegenerative diseases such as ataxia significantly impacts speech and communication, necessitating adaptive clinical care strategies. With the deterioration of speech, Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) can play an ever increasing role in daily life for individuals with ataxia. This review describes the spectrum of AAC resources available, ranging from unaided gestures and sign language to high-tech solutions like speech-generating devices (SGDs) and eye-tracking technology. Despite the availability of various AAC tools, their efficacy is often

Community healthcare workers' experiences with the care of clients on antiretroviral therapy in the community.

INTRODUCTION: community healthcare workers are members of the community affiliated with community-based organisations to implement Primary Health Care (PHC) in the district health services of South Africa. Among other roles, they are expected to care for clients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the community. The purpose of this study was to explore how community healthcare workers describe their experience regarding the management of ART clients in the community environment. METHODS: a qualitative phenomenological approach was used. Semistructured focus group discussion, observations, and

Consulting the Community on Strategies to Strengthen Social Capital for Community Disease Control.

Excluding communities in planning and implementing research maximizes internal risks that are otherwise visible and avoidable when there is adequate community consultation. Communities might not meaningfully use research results if majority of the researched people have minimal or no participation in information generation and dissemination. However, effective participation of researched communities in research is key to transferring knowledge to action. Using a qualitative approach, the study identified barriers to, and relevant strategies for improving health research uptake, particularly fo

Community engagement to implement evidence-based practices in the HEALing communities study.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of evidence-based practices to reduce opioid overdose deaths within communities remains suboptimal. Community engagement can improve the uptake and sustainability of evidence-based practices. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) aims to reduce opioid overdose deaths through the Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention, a community-engaged, data-driven planning process that will be implemented in 67 communities across four states. METHODS: An iterative process was used in the development of the community engagement component of the CTH. The resulting community eng

Community Participation in and Perception of Community-Directed Treatment with Ivermectin in Kinshasa, DRC.

The success of community-directed treatment with Ivermectin (CDTI) depends on active community participation. We conducted a case study nested in a cross-sectional study in the Binza Ozone Health Zone (ZS) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, in order to investigate community's knowledges and perceptions of onchocerciasis and on all CDTI's aspects. We interviewed 106 people aged 20 and over, purposively selected, through eight individual interviews and 12 focus groups. Themes used for collecting data were drawn for the Health Belief Model and data were analyzed using a deductive thematic

Community Epidemiology Approach to Parasitic Infection Screening in a Remote Community in Ecuador.

The Awa indigenous people of Ecuador live in remote areas and were included in health programs only recently. The first screening for parasitic infections in the Awa communities was implemented in the context of community epidemiology. During the site visits in each community, the health-care staff collected the samples for stool microscopy and serology for Strongyloides. A total of 705 individuals consented for the study, representing 40% of the Awa population living in the targeted communities; 184 (26%) participants supplied a stool sample. Giardia intestinalis was found in about 11% of sam

Introduction to the Special Issue: Communication Intervention for Individuals with Complex Communication Needs.

Individuals with complex communication needs are likely to experience considerable difficulties and challenges with everyday communication interactions due to limited use and understanding of natural speech. In this editorial, we review the nature of complex communication needs, describe the wide range of individuals who may experience such needs, and provide a brief history of behavioral approaches to addressing these needs. We also highlight the six papers in this special issue that contribute to the further understanding of the use of behavioral intervention approaches for addressing comple

Overwintering of West Nile virus in a bird community with a communal crow roost.

In temperate climates, transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) is detectable rarely during the coldest months (late fall through early spring), yet the virus has reappeared consistently during the next warm season. Several mechanisms may contribute to WNV persistence through winter, including bird-to-bird transmission among highly viremic species. Here we consider whether, under realistic scenarios supported by field and laboratory evidence, a winter bird community could sustain WNV through the winter in the absence of mosquitoes. With this purpose we constructed a deterministic model for a comm

The effects of an interprofessional patient-centered communication intervention for patients with communication disorders.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This small scale study examined the influence of an interprofessional (IP) evidence based patient-centered communication intervention (PCCI), delivered by trained nurses in collaboration with Speech Language Pathologists, on patient outcomes in an active stroke rehabilitation setting. DESIGN AND METHODS: The setting constraints imposed the use of a single-group pretest and post-test design to determine the influence of the intervention on patient outcomes. Validated tools measured patient quality of life (QOL), depressive symptoms and satisfaction with care. RESULTS: Pa

The dark side of family communication: a communication model of elder abuse and neglect.

To further address the potential factors that lead up to elder abuse in domestic settings, this paper proposes a model from a communication approach to explain dyadic influences between the family caregiver and the elderly care receiver that give rise to the abuse. That is, dysfunctional communication between the caregivers and care receivers may, therefore, increase the likelihood of elder abuse. Grounded in Bugental and her colleagues' work (1993, 1999, 2002) on child abuse, we propose a power-oriented communication model based, in part, on research in the fields of family violence and inter

Measuring disaster-resilient communities: a case study of coastal communities in Indonesia.

Vulnerability reduction and resilience building of communities are central concepts in recent policy debates. Although there are fundamental linkages, and complementarities exist between the two concepts, recent policy and programming has focused more on the latter. It is assumed here that reducing underlying causes of vulnerabilities and their interactions with resilience elements is a prerequisite for obtaining resilience capabilities. An integrated approach, incorporating both the vulnerability and resilience considerations, has been taken while developing an index for measuring disaster-re

"The family is the clinic, the community is the hospital": community mental health in Timor-Leste.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the history and recent development of mental health services in Timor-Leste, a small developing country recovering from conflict. Challenges to effective service delivery are discussed as well as plans for future development. CONCLUSIONS: Timor-Leste's mental health service began just over a decade ago. Unlike many other low and middle income countries where hospital-based services predominate, the mental health model in Timor-Leste is entirely community based. However, challenges to effective mental health care delivery are similar to most developing countries

Genetic clinics in arab communities: meeting individual, family and community needs.

Arab societies are characterized by a wide range of family and social structures, religious and legal conventions, and highly variable economic resources. As might be expected under these circumstances, genetic services cannot readily be devised, delivered, and assessed according to a single model. However, in general terms, the provision of genetic services in Arab communities at all population levels is still inadequate given the prevalence and burden of genetic diseases. Improving this situation calls for major educational efforts that include increasing the genetic literacy of the general

Functional communication in individuals with chronic severe aphasia using augmentative communication.

Intervention incorporating augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is often implemented with adults with aphasia, although studies do not always specify the approaches and strategies used. This study examined abilities of three individuals with chronic non-fluent aphasia (NA) using a dynamic display AAC device to enhance communication. The device, Dialect with Speaking Dynamically Pro, was tailored to each participant's skill level using a treatment protocol adapted from Koul, Corwin, and Hayes (2005). The primary caregiver was the spouse. Pre and post-treatment measures revealed impr
