Essential health services delivery in South Africa during COVID-19: Community and healthcare worker perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Between May 2020 and February 2022, South Africa's health system bore strain as it battled mitigating the coronavirus pandemic. The country's pandemic response was scrutinized. This period also brought into focus pre-existing shortcomings in the healthcare system and its governing bodies. Contextually, there is a paucity in literature on the experiences of healthcare providers and users. This study aimed to contribute information on COVID-19, with the intention of providing guidance on preparing for future infectious disease outbreaks. METHODS: Cross sectional exploratory qualitat

Pharmacist-led telehealth tobacco cessation services compared with usual care in a community health center.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies regarding tobacco cessation services (TCS) concluded that pharmacist interventions lead to higher or similar quit rates compared with usual care; however, little is known about patient satisfaction with these services. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed 30-day point prevalence abstinence and patient satisfaction of TCS provided by pharmacists compared with primary care providers (PCPs) in a community health center. Secondary objectives assessed the number of encounters and time spent counseling and medications prescribed at each visit. METHODS: Patients at the age o

Can Digitization of Health Care Help Low-Resourced Countries Provide Better Community-Based Rehabilitation Services?

In the wake of globalization, proliferation of digital technologies (DTs) is rapidly changing many activities across sectors, including influencing health to "go digital." Harnessing opportunities of DTs can be a pathway for delivery of health services, such as community-based rehabilitation (CBR) to the vulnerable groups of populations, particularly those in countries with low resources where health systems are weak and experiencing a deficit of trained health workers necessary to effectively deliver a full spectrum of health services. This perspective explored how some DTs can be leveraged i

Satisfaction with health and community services among homeless and formerly homeless individuals in Quebec, Canada.

User satisfaction is a crucial quality indicator in health service provision. Few studies have measured user satisfaction among homeless and formerly homeless individuals, despite the high prevalence of mental health disorders (MHD) in this population. The purpose of this study was to assess overall satisfaction among 455 homeless and formerly homeless individuals who were receiving health and community services, and to identify factors associated with user satisfaction. Data collection occurred between January and September 2017. Study participants were 18 years old or over, with experience o

The Role of Certified Community Behavioral Health Centers in Improving Access to Peer-Supported Services.

Peer support workers (PSW) improve outcomes for people with behavioral health needs, but integrating PSWs into routine behavioral healthcare has been challenging. Certified Community Health Centers (CCBHC), a new comprehensive care model, provides new opportunities to increase access to PSWs. The present study examines whether PSW utilization changed following one organization's transition to a CCBHC. Administrative data from a large behavioral health organization was used to examine changes in peer delivered services before and after CCBHC implementation. Chi-square analyses examined changes

The Italian SEME Surveillance System of Severe Mental Disorders Presenting to Community Mental Health Services.

Mental health is recognized worldwide as a major public health priority for the twenty-first century. Different actions are needed, including developing or strengthening national mental health information systems, based on standardized indicators that allow national and international monitoring. In 2008, the national Centre for Disease prevention and Control of the Italian Ministry of Health and the Mental Health Unit of the Italian National Institute of Health (INIH) jointly launched a mental health information system named SEME (an Italian acronym meaning 'mental health epidemiological surve

Characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorders who received services through community mental health centers.

Despite the presence of significant psychiatric comorbidity among children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), little research exists on those who receive community-based mental health services. This project examined one year (2004) of data from the database maintained by 26 community mental health centers (CMHCs) in the Midwestern US state of Kansas. Children with autism were compared to children with other ASDs - Asperger's disorder, Rett's disorder, and PDD-NOS. Children with autism predictably received more special education services than children with other ASDs, while the latter were

Living arrangements of individuals with schizophrenia in Japan: impact of community-based mental health services.

AIMS: In Japan psychiatric hospitals and family play the predominant roles in caring for people with serious mental illness. This study explored how the introduction of community-based care has changed this situation by examining living arrangements of individuals with schizophrenia who were treated in one of the most progressive systems in Japan (Kawasaki) compared with national norms. METHODS: The proportion of clients with schizophrenia in the community versus hospital and living arrangements for those in the community were compared between the Kawasaki and national treated population, usi

Facilitators and barriers to patient and public involvement in developing learning health systems within community health services: ascoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Learning Health Systems (LHS) integrate research, clinical expertise, and patient data to continuously improve health care. Although community engagement is central to LHS, existing literature has largely focused on data infrastructure, clinical improvement, and system learning, with limited attention to meaningful patient and public involvement (PPI) in community-based care. This review aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to such involvement in the development of LHS in community health services. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review in line with the JBI methodo

Household satisfaction with health services and response strategies to malaria in mountain communities of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Measuring satisfaction with health service delivery in fragile communities provides an opportunity to improve the resilience of health systems to threats including climate change. Additionally, understanding factors associated with the choice of response strategies to certain public health threats provides an opportunity to design context-specific interventions. METHODS: We used polytomous latent class analyses to group participants' responses and an additive Bayesian modelling network to explore satisfaction with health service delivery as well as factors associated with response

A community based lesbian sexual health service - clinically justified or politically correct?

Lesbian sexual health care is still a neglected issue. In order to address this, a needs assessment was carried out in Glasgow amongst the lesbian community and 200 responses were received. More than 40% of the respondents said they were unable to disclose their sexual orientation to their GP and were unable to discuss sexual health issues with them. Eighty-one percent said there was a need for a lesbian sexual health service and 71% said they would use such a service if it existed. Therefore a pilot clinic was set up in Glasgow and was co-ordinated by a multidisciplinary advisory group. The c
