Nigeria introduced Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs to improve access to skilled care in response to persistently poor health outcomes among women and children. While existing assessments often emphasize the role of healthcare workers, the contributions of social workers and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) remain largely overlooked. This study explores the roles played by social workers and CHEWs in enhancing access to MCH services through an intervention project in Anambra State, Nigeria. An exploratory qualitative design was employed, involving interviews with five social

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability in the US, with higher rates in rural areas. Although community health workers (CHWs) are effective in improving CVD outcomes, limited evidence exists on their role in addressing behavioral health needs within lifestyle change interventions. This evaluation assessed the feasibility of integrating behavioral health components focusing on psychologic distress, anxiety, and depression into the Colorado Heart Healthy Solutions program (CHHS) in rural communities by using 3 domains of the RE-AIM (Reach

This article evaluates the COVID-19 pandemic impacts on the Family Health Strategy (FHS) team's work routines across a range of northeast Brazilian cities as perceived by community health workers (CHW). Data on COVID-19, CHW activities, and FHS teams were collected in 2021 by a structured questionnaire. A total of 1,935 CHWs from four state capitals (Fortaleza - Ceará State, João Pessoa - Paraíba State, Recife - Pernambuco State, Teresina - Piauí State) and four hinterland cities (Crato, Juazeiro do Norte, Barbalha, Sobral - Ceará State) participated in the study. Most CHWs were women (82.42%)

INTRODUCTION: Given the high infection rate of sexually transmitted infections (STI) among migrant women sex workers (WSWs), it is necessary to understand how to improve prevention, information and care for this vulnerable population. Community health workers (CHWs), by linking community to health services, are positioned to improve health outcomes in migrant communities. This article aims to describe a pilot innovative intervention performed by CHWs to improve sexual health in migrant WSWs.
METHODS: This one-year intervention study used a respondent-driven sampling (RDS) to recruit a represe

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) play increasingly important roles in vector-borne disease prevention globally, yet their contributions remain underutilized and poorly documented in the literature. Understanding how CHWs are deployed across the prevention continuum and identifying barriers to their effectiveness is essential for strengthening mosquito-borne disease control programs.
OBJECTIVES: (1) describe the scope and characteristics of studies engaging Community Health Workers (CHWs) in vector-borne disease prevention through community-based strategies; (2) organize the finding

NM averages 450 new cases of melanoma annually. Promotoras are community health workers in NM that provide health education and resources to the community. The project aims to determine if promotora education can improve the recognition of suspicious lesions, encouraging community members to seek care. Current literature focuses on the self-reported confidence of CHWs in recognizing skin cancer. A total of 54 promotoras were sampled through a Qualtrics quiz asking whether skin lesion photos are suspicious. Participants were also asked to rate their confidence in recognizing a suspicious skin l

BACKGROUND: The role of community health workers (CHWs) in the West Africa Ebola outbreak has been highlighted to advocate for increasing numbers of CHWs globally to build resilience, strengthen health systems, and provide emergency response capacity. However, the roles CHWs played, the challenges they faced, and their effectiveness during the outbreak are not well documented. This study assessed the impact of Ebola on community-based maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services, documented the contribution of CHWs and other community-based actors to the Ebola response, and identified l

BACKGROUND: Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a vital role in improving health equity and patient outcomes in the United States (US). However, a systematic synthesis of their economic value remains limited. This review aimed to critically appraise the methodologies and consolidate the evidence on the return on investment (ROI) of CHW programmes in the US.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of US-based economic evaluations that assessed the ROI of CHW programmes. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, EconLit, CEA Registry, and available grey literature from inception to April 2

PURPOSE: We evaluated a Community Health Worker (CHW)-Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) model for delivering tailored tobacco treatment counseling and support in a rural, low-resourced county.
METHODS: This was an exploratory, prospective study of people 18 years or older who used any tobacco product including e-cigarettes or vapes in the past 30 days. The CHW assessed tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, and quit history; and collected an expired breath carbon monoxide sample and a brief health history before providing 4-6 in-person or phone-based sessions involving tailored tobacco trea

INTRODUCTION: Community Health Workers (CHWs) are trusted public health workers who strengthen healthcare access, quality, and cultural responsiveness by addressing social determinants of health. While CHW services show value, professionalization policies, including certification and training requirements, remain debated.
METHODS: To understand these policies, we conducted an empirical legal mapping study of CHW professionalism laws in 54 US jurisdictions (50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Guam) in effect in 2019 and 2024 following consensus legal mapping guidelines for legal

Community health workers in one health region of New South Wales were surveyed about their criteria and referral patterns to identify and assist adults with acquired hearing losses. Reported or observed communication problems were the most commonly used criteria for identifying hearing loss, suggesting that a failure model was being utilised. Given that the literature has previously demonstrated reluctance on the part of individuals with acquired hearing loss to report their hearing difficulties, the implications of these results are discussed. Clients suspected of having acquired hearing loss

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of perinatal home visits by community health workers (CHWs) often diminishes when large regional or national programmes are implemented. To address this gap, we aimed to identify which CHW behaviours influence maternal and child outcomes.
METHODS: We randomised all government-funded CHWs at eight deeply rural clinics (n = 43) by clinic to usual care, which consisted of home visits (control group; four clinics, 23 CHWs, 392 mothers), or to home visiting, which included improved monitoring and supervision (intervention group; four clinics, 20 CHWs, 423 mothers). BACKGROUND: This study sought to understand community health workers' (CHW) knowledge and perceptions of community beliefs surrounding neonatal jaundice (NNJ), a treatable but potentially fatal condition prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional qualitative study, CHWs in Kumasi, Ghana, completed in-depth interviews with trained research assistants using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using grounded theory methodology.
RESULTS: Knowledge of NNJ varied widely among the 23 respondents: 74% knew NNJ could

BACKGROUND: This is the eighth in our series of 11 papers on "CHWs at the Dawn of a New Era". Community health worker (CHW) incentives and remuneration are core issues that affect the performance of individual CHWs and the performance of the overall CHW programme. A better understanding of what motivates CHWs and a stronger awareness of the social justice dimensions of remuneration are essential in order to build stronger CHW programmes and to support the professionalization of the CHW workforce.
METHODS: We provide examples of incentives that have been provided to CHWs and identify factors t

BACKGROUND: The vaccination of health workers has a large repercussion on the health of the workers, the patients and the population in general. Due to this, we proposed to discover the serological status for varicella, rubella, mumps and measles in the workers of a tertiary hospital in Madrid.
METHODS: We have conducted a retrospective epidemiological study of 1060 health workers, obtaining information such as age, sex, service area, employment status, pre-exposure vaccination and post-vaccination serology and vaccination status.
RESULTS: In the population studied, 90.1% were protected agai

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) increase the accessibility of institutional health systems by building trust in communities. We assessed community members' trust in CHWs in Haiti, Malawi, and Rwanda. We explored whether potentially modifiable factors, including sex concordance between community members and CHWs and time spent by CHWs engaging with their community, are associated with increased trust in CHWs.
METHODS: Between June and October 2023, we used two-stage sampling to conduct a cross-sectional survey of 1920 community members, cared for by Partners In Health. We multiplie
