Helminth parasites of dogs from two resource-limited communities in South Africa.

Biological samples were collected from dogs in resource-limited communities in the North-West and Gauteng Provinces of South Africa to assess the prevalence of helminth parasitism. These samples included adhesive tape peri-anal skin swabs and fresh faecal samples for helminth examination, and thick and thin blood films (smears) and whole-blood samples in anticoagulant for examination of filarial nematode microfilariae and haemoprotozoa. The eggs of Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Dipylidium caninum and taeniids were identified. None of the blood samples and smears test

Rural Veteran Perceptions of a Virtual Health Resource Center in a Community-Based Setting.

BACKGROUND: Virtual care (VC) services (e.g., telemedicine) could help address transportation barriers to healthcare among rural Veterans. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) Virtual Health Resource Centers (VHRCs) provide in-person and telephone technology support for Veterans to use VC, but few are in rural locations. Our objective was to understand Veteran perceptions of a novel implementation of a rural, community-based VHRC.   METHODS: We conducted our study using an established learning health system model and a rapid qualitative analysis approach to collect and analyze data. Data we

Short-stay hospitalisation for thyroid surgery - a feasible option in a resource constrained community.

BACKGROUND: Short-stay thyroid surgery is still nascent in developing nations like Nigeria. With the increasing cost of healthcare, there is consistently the need to reduce healthcare delivery costs. Short-stay services in selected cases meet this goal, in addition to other benefits of short hospital stays. This study aimed to highlight the feasibility of the practice of short-stay thyroidectomy in a rural tertiary hospital in Nigeria. METHODS: The study is a retrospective review of all patients who had short-stay thyroidectomy in a rural tertiary hospital in Nigeria from January 2017 to Dece

Surgical Clip Ligation of Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm in a Resource-Limited Setting.

Anterior communicating artery (ACOM) aneurysm clipping with intraoperative measures to ensure total occlusion and avoid ischemic complications is standard in countries such as the United States. However, alternatives need to be considered in resource-limited settings. The clipping of an unruptured, superiorly projecting ACOM aneurysm in a resource-limited setting is presented and special nuances that optimize safety are described. Careful surgical technique, meticulous identification of relevant anatomy, post-ligation inspection of the aneurysm and adjacent vessels, and possibly needle punctur

Effect of health expenses on household capabilities and resource allocation in a rural commune in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Significant health expenses can force households to reduce consumption of items required for daily living and long-term well-being, depriving them of the capability to lead economically stable and healthy lives. Previous studies of out-of-pocket (OOP) and other health expenses have typically characterized them as "catastrophic" in terms of a threshold level or percentage of household income. We aim to re-conceptualize the impact of health expenses on household "flourishing" in terms of "basic capabilities." METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a 2008 survey covering 697 households,

Assessing the ability of cross-trained pharmacy technician-community health workers to identify non-medical drivers of health resources.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are increasingly attempting to address non-medical drivers of health (NMDoH) by screening patients for health-related social needs (HRSNs). Cross-training pharmacy technicians as community health workers (PhT-CHWs) may expand pharmacies' capacity to provide these services, but little is known about the community resources identified by PhT-CHWs during training or their associated Z-codes. Characterizing these resources may inform implementation of pharmacy-based community resource referral services. OBJECTIVE: To describe the NMDoH resources identified by PhTs

Community-Defined Challenges: A Five-Year Qualitative Needs and Resources Assessment in Vulnerable Latino Populations of Miami-Dade County.

BACKGROUND: Miami-Dade County ranks first in Florida for HIV cases, yet broad epidemiological data often masks the "on-the-ground" reality of its most vulnerable residents. While standard reports suggest declining domestic violence, these statistics fail to account for community-defined health crises-the "SAVA" syndemic (substance use, violence, and HIV/AIDS)-occurring within localized micro-communities. METHODS: Leveraging five years of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and Grounded Theory, this study engaged 97 community members and leaders to unmask these hidden burdens. We emp

Strengthening vaccine uptake: a qualitative assessment of community health worker educational resource needs and community perspectives on vaccination in Western Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccination strengthens health systems by preventing the spread of infectious diseases and reducing morbidity and mortality. The introduction of the malaria vaccine in Kenya, alongside the growing access to technological tools, offers a timely opportunity to explore the educational needs of community health workers (CHWs) and the feasibility of digital training and health education resources for CHWs. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted among CHWs and community members in two sub-counties in Migori County. In-depth interviews were held with 20 CHWs selected th

Identifying community physical activity and health resources for treatment of back pain by utilizing members of a physical activity network.

BACKGROUND: Back pain is one of the leading causes of health care expenditure in the US and is linked to an increased body mass index. Many evidence-based modalities for the prevention and treatment of back pain closely mirror recommendations for weight loss and include physical activity and health maintenance activities (PAHM). The primary aim of this study was to ascertain community assets, and perceptions of the use of PAHM in the treatment of back pain by West Virginia Physical Activity Network (WVPAN) members. METHODS: Participants for the study were recruited from the West Virginia Phys

Exploring Access to and Use of Community Resources and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Interest Among Black and Latina Women in Texas.

Leveraging community resources to address disparities in HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use across Black and Latino/a communities is of high importance, yet little is known about how community members utilize these resources. We explored the use of community resources and PrEP among Black and Latina women at high risk for HIV by conducting semistructured interviews with 18 Black and Latina women from May 2018 to November 2019 in Austin, Texas. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic content analysis. We found that the majority of participants used community re

Human resources and models of mental healthcare integration into primary and community care in India: Case studies of 72 programmes.

BACKGROUND: Given the scarcity of specialist mental healthcare in India, diverse community mental healthcare models have evolved. This study explores and compares Indian models of mental healthcare delivered by primary-level workers (PHW), and health workers' roles within these. We aim to describe current service delivery to identify feasible and acceptable models with potential for scaling up. METHODS: Seventy two programmes (governmental and non-governmental) across 12 states were visited. 246 PHWs, coordinators, leaders, specialists and other staff were interviewed to understand the progra

Community behavioural resilience and STIs: Predictors of pandemic preparedness in a low-resource setting in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) infect 374 million people annually, with sub-Saharan Africa bearing the highest burden. Community behavioural resilience remains poorly understood in low-income settings, creating a critical gap in STI pandemic preparedness. This study identifies predictors of willingness to adopt protective behaviours during a hypothetical STI outbreak in rural Cameroon. METHODS: We conducted a community-based survey in 2022 among residents of three riverine health areas in the Bafia Health District, Cameroon. Participants (N=372; 202 females [54.3%], 170 ma

Toward an integrated resource for pharmacogenomics (PGx): Survey findings from the genomic medicine communities.

PURPOSE: Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is a critical component of precision health care that aims to improve drug efficacy and reduce adverse events. Terminologies and standards have not always aligned between PGx and broader genomic medicine communities, which is a barrier to PGx implementation. An updated assessment of community barriers, needs, and perspectives is critical to enable more standardized terminologies and interpretation frameworks. METHODS: The Clinical Genome Resource's PGx Interpretation Committee (PGxIC, formerly referred to as the PGx Working Group, PGxWG) conducted 2 surveys tar

The PSC scientific community resource: an asset for multi-omics interrogation of primary sclerosing cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare, chronic cholestatic liver disease that often progresses to end-stage liver disease and/or the development of hepatobiliary neoplasia. Lack of prognostic tools and treatment options for PSC is driven in part by our poor understanding of its pathogenesis, which is thought to be complex, the interaction of genetic variants, environmental influences and biological response throughout the course of disease. The PSC Scientific Community Resource (PSC-SCR) seeks to overcome previous shortcomings by facilitating novel research in PSC with the
