Home- and community-based services, informal support networks, and life satisfaction among older adults in China: moving beyond filial support.

BACKGROUND: With rapid population ageing and shrinking household sizes in China, Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) have become a critical component of elderly care. However, the interplay between formal services and informal support networks-such as intergenerational family support and horizontal social ties-remains insufficiently explored. This study examines the impact of HCBS utilization on life satisfaction among older Chinese adults and analyzes how these effects are moderated by different types of support networks. METHODS: This study utilized data from the 2023 China Longitudin

Dusted community: piloting a virtual peer-to-peer support community for people with an asbestos-related diagnosis and their families.

Individuals with an asbestos-related diagnosis and their carers face burdens including debilitating and life-limiting physical symptoms and medico-legal stressors. Feelings of social isolation are common. Increasing social connectedness can lead to increased feelings of personal empowerment and may inhibit chronic stress responses. The authors report on the development, via a process of participatory action research, of an online peer-to-peer support group, and the first 30-day test phase of this virtual community. Initial indications are that individuals with an asbestos-related diagnosis and

Implementation of Community Health Worker Support for Tobacco Cessation: A Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with serious mental illness have high rates of tobacco use disorder and underuse pharmacotherapy for tobacco cessation. In a previous randomized controlled trial, participants receiving community health worker (CHW) support and education for their primary care providers (PCPs) had higher tobacco abstinence rates at 2 years, partly because of increased initiation of tobacco-cessation pharmacotherapy. The authors aimed to determine the association between CHW-participant engagement and tobacco abstinence outcomes. METHODS: The authors conducted a secondary, mixed-methods analy

Development of Pressure Sensors to Help Support Community Lymphedema Monitoring: A Scoping Review.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema is a condition occurring after a partial or full mastectomy, where there is a buildup of interstitial fluid in the body, particularly in the upper limb. There is a lack of at-home sensors that can help monitor the progression of lymphedema. The purpose of this scoping review is to gather relevant information on sensors for remote lymphedema monitoring. A literature search of Medline, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and BMC databases yielded 96 studies. A total of six studies were selected for data extraction. Data were extracted from each study and organized in

Community nurses' support for patients with fibromyalgia who use cannabis to manage pain.

Supporting patients to manage chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia (FM), remains a challenge for community nurses. Research suggests that despite the absence of a licensed cannabis-based product for medicinal use (CBPM) available for people with FM in the UK, there is an appetite for FM patients to use cannabis for pain management. Nurses have expressed anxieties when balancing tensions between helping patients and working within medical guidelines, as well as a need for further education about patient cannabis use. This article provides community nurses with insight into how cannabis

Relationship between Social Support Networks and Physical Functioning in Older Community-Dwelling Mexicans.

Some studies have demonstrated the relationship between social support networks (SSNs) and health status. In this sense, it has been considered that physical and mental functioning is a key indicator of the health in the age people. The aim of this study was to determine the association between social support networks and physical functioning. A cross-sectional study was carried out including a convenience sample of 150 older community-dwelling Mexicans. We assessed the familial, extra-familial and institutional SSNs; social contacts; the activities of daily living (ADL); the instrumental acti

Longitudinal Evaluation of Community Support Project to Improve Oral Function in Japanese Elderly.

Change in oral function was evaluated longitudinally in elderly persons participating in an Exercises for Healthy Oral Function program implemented as part of the Long-Term Care Prevention Project. The participants comprised high-risk and healthy persons aged 65 yr or over. A questionnaire was used to classify them into two groups ('every day or sometimes' or 'rarely') at the end of the study for a comparison of change in repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST) scores and oral diadochokinesis between 3 time points: at before, at immediately after, and at 1 yr after completion of the program.

Multi-Modal Sensoriality and Online Community-Based Support in the Long Covid Choir.

Long covid involves diverse chronic physical and cognitive symptoms with poorly understood mechanisms and limited treatment options. Many affected individuals turn to community groups for support. Drawing on ethnographic research with the Long Covid Choir, a patient-run online singing and support group, in this paper I examine how participants use overlapping sensory experiences to cultivate belonging, foster biosocial solidarity, structure care, and counter isolation. Through shared auditory and visual practices - collective breathing, guided mindfulness, and gentle stretching - the choir cul

Emotion Expression in Breast Cancer Support Seeking: Empirical Study of an Online Community.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer affects millions of women and presents not only medical challenges but also emotional, financial, and social burdens. Beyond clinical treatment, patients increasingly turn to online cancer communities (OCCs) for informational support, emotional support, and shared coping strategies. OCCs help patients manage daily life and reduce psychological distress through shared experiences and empathetic engagement. Within these communities, emotional expressions serve as critical cues through which patients communicate their situations and needs with other OCC members. OBJECTI

Community engagement to support COVID-19 vaccine uptake: a living systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Widespread vaccination against COVID-19 is one of the most effective ways to control, and ideally, end the global COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy and vaccine rates vary widely across countries and populations and are influenced by complex sociocultural, political, economic and psychological factors. Community engagement is an integral strategy within immunisation campaigns and has been shown to improve vaccine acceptance. As evidence on community engagement to support COVID-19 vaccine uptake is emerging and constantly changing, research that lessens the knowledge-to-practice

Genetic testing for Huntington's disease: A thematic analysis of online support community messages.

Huntington's disease is a fatal late-onset genetic illness that causes motor, cognitive and psychiatric disorders. Individuals considering genetic testing may benefit from online social support. This study investigates how genetic testing is discussed within health forums. A total of 337 messages written by 58 individuals were analysed using deductive thematic analysis. Discussions examined three themes: deciding to be tested (enquiring about symptoms and starting a new family), preparing for the test (information seeking and attending appointments) and receiving the results (positive and nega

Community-based parenting and family support interventions and the prevention of drug abuse.

This paper presents a model for the development of a comprehensive, multilevel, preventively-oriented parenting and family support strategy to reduce family risk factors associated with drug abuse in young people. If parenting interventions are to make a significant impact at a population level on the prevalence of dysfunctional parenting practices, there is a need for an ecological approach to parenting support. Such an approach needs to target a variety of social contexts that are in a position to provide parents with access to evidence-based parenting interventions. The Triple P-Positive Pa
