Community-based participatory action research on rheumatic heart disease in an Australian Aboriginal homeland: Evaluation of the 'On track watch' project.

Strategies to date have been ineffective in reducing high rates of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in Australian Aboriginal people; a disease caused by streptococcal infections. A remote Aboriginal community initiated a collaboration to work towards elimination of RHD. Based in 'both-way learning' (reciprocal knowledge co-creation), the aim of this study was to co-design, implement and evaluate community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) to achieve this vision. Activities related to understanding and addressing RHD social determinants were delivered through an accredited course adapted

Identifying and Ranking Strategies to Address Housing Insecurity and Homelessness Within the LGBTQIA+ Community in Southern Nevada: Utilization of Community-Based Participatory Research and Concept Mapping.

Housing insecurity is a critical issue within Southern Nevada. However, little is known about the housing-insecurity-related needs of LGBTQIA+ Southern Nevadans. The aim of this study was to identify strategies to address housing insecurity among this vulnerable community. Utilizing community-based participatory research and concept mapping, the most salient solutions were identified and prioritized at a Community Housing Forum. This Forum brought together stakeholders with expertise in housing or who work with the LGBTQIA+ community. The most important identified solutions consistently emphas

A community-based participatory research and community health workers-led health education strategy for schistosomiasis control among schoolchildren in Pemba Island, Zanzibar: a cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains an intractable public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. While mass drug administration (MDA) has been the cornerstone of control, its limited impact on sustained behavioral change and persistent transmission in high-intensity transmission areas underscores the urgent need for complementary strategies. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach led by community health workers (CHWs), compared to conventional health education, in achieving sustainable schistosomiasis control among schoolchildren in

Breaking barriers to completing genetic testing for inherited breast cancer among at-risk Black women using a community-based participatory research approach.

National guidelines from the US Preventive Services Task Force and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommend the use of family-health-history (FHH)-based risk assessment tools to guide genetic testing (GT) among women with an increased risk of inherited cancer and inform personalized cancer risk management. Prior research has focused on attitudes toward and decisions about initial uptake of GT in Black patients but little is known about the factors that impact the subsequent completion of GT after they have already provided consent. Using a community-based participatory research (CBP

Development of a curriculum to educate religious leaders about blood pressure using community-based participatory research and educational theory in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Hypertension is a leading cause of premature mortality in Tanzania, but low trust and awareness of biomedical healthcare and prioritization of spiritual over physical health hinders uptake of care. Religious leaders are highly respected community members and are eager to collaborate with health professionals. Few community health worker training programs utilize evidence-based pedagogical recommendations in combination with theology specific to their students' backgrounds. Our team of health research professionals and religious leaders developed a curriculum to teach local religious leaders to

Illustrating stories of stigma from the perspective of people living with diabetes while experiencing homelessness: An arts-based community participatory research project.

AIMS: Our objective was to explore the stigma experienced by people with lived experiences of both diabetes and homelessness. METHODS: This community-based participatory research (CBPR) project was underpinned by a partnership between academic researchers and those with lived experience (co-researchers). We used two arts-based research methods, Forum Theatre and Participatory Filmmaking, and collected field notes, interviews with co-researchers, and the narrative scripts from the play and film. Interpretative analysis was used to generate broader themes. RESULTS: We identified three themes d

Using community-based participatory research methods to inform care for patients experiencing homelessness: An opportunity for resident education on health care disparities.

People experiencing homelessness (PEH) suffer higher burdens of chronic illnesses, have higher rates of emergency medicine (ED) use and hospitalization, and ultimately are at increased risk for premature death compared to housed counterparts. Structural racism contributes to a disproportionate burden of homelessness among people of color. PEH experience not only significant medical concerns but also complex social needs that need to be addressed concurrently for effective healing, issues that have been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. As health disparities and structural racism intersect am

Mapping for Engagement: Setting up a Community Based Participatory Research Project to Reach Underserved Communities at Risk for Hepatitis C in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1. 07 million people in Vietnam are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). To address this epidemic, the South East Asian Research Collaborative in Hepatitis (SEARCH) launched a 600-patient cohort study and two clinical trials, both investigating shortened treatment strategies for chronic HCV infection with direct-acting antiviral drugs. We conducted ethnographic research with a subset of trial participants and found that the majority were aware of HCV infection and its implications and were motivated to seek treatment. However, people who inject drugs (PWID), and oth

Establishing a SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Drive-Through Collection Site: A Community-Based Participatory Research Partnership With a Federally Qualified Health Center.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected underserved and minority populations in the United States. This is partially attributable to limited access to diagnostic testing from deeply rooted structural inequities precipitating higher infection and mortality rates. We describe the process of establishing a drive-through collection site by leveraging an academic-community partnership between a medical institution and a federally qualified health center in Minnesota. Over 10 weeks, 2006 COVID-19 tests were provided to a socioeconomically disadvantaged population of racial/ethnic minor

A qualitative process evaluation of community-based participatory research and human-centered design in the 'Let's talk about vaccines' approach in Mozambique and Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring full coverage of childhood vaccination programmes is a persistent challenge in low- and middle-income countries. Urgent action is required to ensure catch up of missed immunisations in children, while simultaneously building trust and demand within communities to sustainably address existing immunization gaps. This paper summarizes the findings of a process evaluation of the 'Let's talk about vaccines' approach by VillageReach in Mozambique and Malawi. The approach used community-based participatory research to identify the barriers to childhood vaccination faced by caregi

"Talk About It!" Shared Decision-Making for Methadone and Buprenorphine Initiation: Development and Preliminary Evaluation of a Conversation Aid via Community-Based Participatory Research.

OBJECTIVES: Although robust evidence exists supporting opioid agonist treatment (OAT) as the best currently available treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD), many barriers prevent widespread access to the two most efficacious forms of OAT, buprenorphine and methadone. We sought to address interpersonal and knowledge-related barriers to OAT implementation by facilitating shared decision-making in the context of ED care. The objective of this study was to refine and evaluate an OUD treatment conversation aid in partnership with people with lived experience (PWLE). METHODS: We combined communit
