Comorbidity of Ocular and Facial Demodicosis.

PURPOSE: To determine the association between ocular and facial demodicosis, and the effect of facial treatment on ocular demodicosis. DESIGN: Prospective clinical cohort study. METHODS: Ocular demodicosis outpatients from a tertiary medical center were enrolled from April to December 2020. The diagnosis was based on epilation of 4 eyelashes from each upper eyelid. High ocular Demodex load (ODL) was defined as ≥8 mites per eye. Facial infestation was assessed by direct microscopic examination, with facial Demodex overgrowth (FDO) defined as a density >5 mites/cm2. All patients were prescribe

[Comorbidity of tension headache and insomnia].

The review shows the relationship between tension-type headache (THT) and insomnia. The pathophysiological and psychological mechanisms of their mutual influence on each other are considered. Evidence is provided that the combination of these pathologies often leads to the development of maladaptive coping strategies that aggravate the patient's condition. The features and difficulties of therapy of patients suffering from TTH and insomnia are considered in detail. It has been shown that the treatment of such patients should include approaches aimed at stopping TTH, sleep disorders and associa

Pathophysiological Bases of Comorbidity in Migraine.

Despite that it is commonly accepted that migraine is a disorder of the nervous system with a prominent genetic basis, it is comorbid with a plethora of medical conditions. Several studies have found bidirectional comorbidity between migraine and different disorders including neurological, psychiatric, cardio- and cerebrovascular, gastrointestinal, metaboloendocrine, and immunological conditions. Each of these has its own genetic load and shares some common characteristics with migraine. The bidirectional mechanisms that are likely to underlie this extensive comorbidity between migraine and ot

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and Psychiatric Comorbidity.

Most focal seizures originate in the temporal lobe and are commonly divided into mesial and lateral temporal epilepsy, depending upon the neuronal circuitry involved. The hallmark features of the mesial temporal epilepsy are aura, unconsciousness, and automatisms. Symptoms often overlap with the lateral temporal epilepsy. However, the latter present a less evident psychomotor arrest, frequent clones and dystonic postures, and common focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. Sclerosis of the hippocampus is the most frequent cause of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). TLE is among all epilepsies the

Sigmoid volvulus: Comorbidity with sigmoid gangrene.

Sigmoid volvulus (SV) is the wrapping of the sigmoid colon around its mesentery, and sigmoid gangrene is a catastrophic complication of SV. Although the diagnosis of SV is generally not difficult, unfortunately, most of the clinical, laboratory and radiological signs are not pathognomonic in demonstrating sigmoid gangrene. The treatment of gangrenous SV requires emergency surgery. Sigmoid gangrene worsens the prognosis of SV by doubling the mortality rate.

Recognizing Psychiatric Comorbidity With Reading Disorders.

Reading disorder (RD), a specific learning disorder (SLD) of reading that includes impairment in word reading, reading fluency, and/or reading comprehension, is common in the general population but often is not comprehensively understood or assessed in mental health settings. In education settings, comorbid mental and associated disorders may be inadequately integrated into intervention plans. Assessment and intervention for RD may be delayed or absent in children with frequently co-occurring mental disorders not fully responding to treatment in both school and mental health settings. Cardiovascular Comorbidity in Inflammatory Rheumatological Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1.5 million adults in Germany suffer from an inflammatory rheumatological condition. The most common among these are rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis-above all axial spondyloarthritis, including ankylosing spondylitis (Bekhterev's disease) and psoriatic arthritis. These systemic inflammatory diseases often affect the heart as well. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective literature search, on current European guidelines, and on the authors' clinical experience. RESULTS: Rheumatic inflammation of cardiac structures can m

Comorbidity of Arithmetic and Reading Disorder.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the cognitive profiles of primary school children (age 82-133 months) on a battery of basic number processing and calculation tasks. The sample consisted of four groups matched for age and IQ: arithmetic disorder only (AD; n = 20), reading disorder only (RD; n = 40), a comorbid group ( n = 27), and an unimpaired control group ( n = 40). Multiple 2 (RD vs. No RD) × 2 (AD vs. No AD) factorial ANCOVAs showed that children with RD had selective impairments in counting and number transcoding efficiency. In contrast, children with AD performed poorly i

Single-Gene Determinants of Epilepsy Comorbidity.

Common somatic conditions are bound to occur by chance in individuals with neurological disorders as prevalent as epilepsy, but when biological links underlying the comorbidity can be uncovered, the relationship may provide clues into the origin and mechanisms of both. The expanding list of monogenic epilepsies and their associated clinical features offer a remarkable opportunity to mine the epilepsy genome for coordinate neurodevelopmental phenotypes and examine their pathogenic mechanisms. Defined single-gene-linked epilepsy syndromes identified to date include all of the most frequently cit

Sexual and bladder comorbidity in women.

Sexual dysfunction in women is defined as disorders of sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, and/or sexual pain, which result in significant personal distress and may have a negative effect on a woman's health and an impact on her quality of life. A comprehensive understanding of the anatomic, neurobiologic, and psychologic mechanisms behind women's sexual function and dysfunction is of paramount importance. This chapter reviews the most frequent comorbid conditions related to urinary tract symptoms (thus including symptoms related to overactive bladder syndrome and urinary incontinence) and sexual

Asperger's syndrome: diagnosis, comorbidity and therapy.

Asperger's syndrome (AS), a behavioral disorder that is related to autism, is associated with abnormal social functioning and repetitive behaviors but not with a decrease in intelligence or linguistic functionality. This article reviews the clinical diagnosis of AS and discusses the comorbid disorders that may be present with AS, as well as the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of pharmacotherapies given to AS patients, as reported in preclinical and clinical studies. AS may be present with several comorbid disorders including: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia,

[Comorbidity of rheumatic and hepatic diseases].

The correlation between rheumatic diseases and liver diseases is complex and often not given sufficient attention. There are, however, consequences for diagnosis and therapy. Rheumatic diseases can present with hepatic symptoms while liver diseases can exhibit rheumatic symptoms. Examples of liver diseases as a cause of rheumatic symptoms are viral hepatitis B and C, autoimmune hepatitis and hemochromatosis. As a result of rheumatic diseases, such as adult onset Still's disease and systemic lupus erythematosus, liver dysfunction can occur. Autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and pr

Indirect comorbidity in childhood and adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidity between psychiatric disorders is common, but pairwise associations between two disorders may be explained by the presence of other diagnoses that are associated with both disorders or "indirect" comorbidity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Comorbidities of common childhood psychiatric disorders were tested in three community samples of children ages 6-17 (8931 observations of 2965 subjects). Psychiatric disorder status in all three samples was assessed with the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment. Indirect comorbidity was defined as A-B associations that decreased from s

[Relationship between comorbidity and asthma control].

INTRODUCTION: The coexistence of potentially aggravating processes is common in asthmatics, particularly in patients with difficult control. The primary aim of this study is to ascertain whether comorbidity id more common in uncontrolled patients. As a secondary aim, we propose to evaluate the correlation between the asthma control test (ACT) and the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FENO). PATIENT AND METHODS: A prospective, observational study comparing the function and clinical picture of two groups of asthmatics: controlled (ACT≥20) and uncontrolled (ACT<20). They were all assessed for, s

Comorbidity between epilepsy and sleep disorders.

Despite being relatively common and potentially able to have clinical and pathophysiological consequences, the comorbidity between epilepsy and sleep disorders is poorly investigated in the literature and rarely taken into consideration by clinicians in general practice. There is increasing evidence that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) coexists in epilepsy (in 10% of unselected adult epilepsy patients, 20% of children with epilepsy and up to 30% of drug-resistant epilepsy patients). A few lines of evidence suggest that continuous positive airway pressure treatment of OSA in epilepsy patients im

Psychiatric comorbidity in the frail patient.

The psychopathological syndromes associated with the organic disease in the frail patient are put in the focus of our studies. In the frail patient, mood disorders show a multifacet appearance often associated to the invalidating pathologies or determined by the interaction between the diseases and the individual personality traits. A psychotic break can worsen the evolution of the clinical status. In the clinical practice with the frail elderly, the diagnostic and therapeutic phases change to some extent. The psychiatric diagnosis based upon the DSM-IV-TR shall include a multiaxial approach,
