An investigation was undertaken of morbidity after outpatient general anaesthesia for comprehensive dental care in a group of paediatric patients over a 1-year period. Data were collated from the patient's hospital notes and from the response to a questionnaire sent to parents/carers. Clinical data were obtained for 55 cases (age range 3-17 years) for whom parents/carers had returned questionnaires. There were 27 intellectually and/or physically impaired patients, the other 28 being anxious or phobic. After discharge, 44% of all parents/carers reported symptoms post-operatively in their child,

BACKGROUND: In an era wherein, persuasive evidence continues to witness the association between systemic and periodontal diseases, the absence of scientific data on dental professionals' comprehension concerning the HIV infection and periodontal link is lamentably backward. Thus, the key objective of this research is to ascertain the extent of comprehension possessed by dentists and dental hygienists concerning periodontal implications and their management in HIV patients.
METHODS: It is a quantitative cross-sectional survey employing a descriptive approach focusing on a specific cohort of de

This paper examines the resilience of Taiwan's oral healthcare system in response to COVID-19, focusing on pre-pandemic conditions, pandemic impacts, and policy recommendations for future resilience. In Taiwan, oral diseases were prevalent, with 80.48% of adults affected by periodontitis in 2016, and 65.43% of 5-year-old children experiencing dental caries. Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) covers over 99% of the population, providing comprehensive dental care. The global budget (GB) payment system, implemented in 1998, ensured financial stability. During the pandemic, dental visits in

Oral health is important for the overall health of an individual, particularly older adults. However, a number of obstacles frequently prevent older people from receiving timely and appropriate dental care. These obstacles are intricate and multifaceted, involving systemic diseases, cognitive elements, and psychological, financial, and educational issues. Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are examples of cognitive impairments that can make it difficult for an elderly person to seek or cooperate with dental treatment. Additional psychological factors that decrease care-seeking behaviour include

Haemophilia A and B are one of the most common inherited bleeding disorders. Nevertheless, people with congenital haemorrhagic diatheses comprise a small proportion of the total population. Therefore, treating such patients can be a challenge for dentists, as most of them have no experience in the dental management of these cases. As a result, dental care is often neglected in this cohort of patients. Despite the potential bleeding risk of the dental procedures, the most routine, non-surgical interventions can be performed in a general dental practice after consultation with a haematologist an

AIM: The functional and structural complexities accompanying syndromic craniosynostosis make dental care for these patients particularly challenging. We report a case of long-term care for a syndromic craniosynostosis patient. The objective of this report is to introduce special care guidance and clinical recommendation, so that oral health care providers, as key members of a multidisciplinary care team, can provide optimal diagnosis, treatment, and management for the patient with syndromic craniosynostosis.

Preservation or alteration of the natural dentition to an optimal state of health, function, comfort, and esthetics remains the primary goal of dentistry. However, referral of patients by general dentists to orthodontic specialists may be complex as it involves the interaction of the two dental professionals and the patient. Because there is a marked variation in referral rates between the dentists and many patients may be referred inappropriately, a clear understanding of what is known about current orthodontic treatment possibilities, limitations and inherent risks is necessary. The purpose

To investigate the oral health status and unmet dental needs of patients receiving home-based psychiatric care in Tokyo. This preliminary study aimed to assess the extent of dental problems and identify the proportion of patients requiring urgent or comprehensive dental treatment to inform more effective integrated care strategies. This study involved 22 patients receiving psychiatric care at home from a Tokyo-based clinic. A single dentist conducted free, in-home dental examinations during psychiatric home visits. Oral health was evaluated using the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) i

HIV affects over 39 million people globally and remains a challenge in oral health care despite advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART). The oral cavity often reflects immune status and serves as a site for opportunistic infections, making dental care essential in HIV management. This review explores four main aspects of dental care for people living with HIV (PLHIV): HIV pathophysiology, transmission risk during dental procedures, infection control strategies, and pre-treatment clinical assessment. Using the population-concept-context framework, literature was reviewed from PubMed, Scopus, a

Bisphosphonates constitute a group of drugs capable of modulating bone turnover and reduce its remodeling when an excessive resorption occurs. This is why they are indicated in a large group of bone diseases like postmenopausal osteoporosis or osteolysis associated with breast cancer or multiple myeloma. Over the last few years and due to their extensive use, many cases of complications associated with their use have been published. Among the most important possible adverse effects are the oral ones, with the appearance of ulcerations and, especially, osteonecrosis of the jaws associated with

People with drug use disorders (PWDUD) have elevated prevalence of oral diseases, in particular dental caries (tooth decay), periodontal (gum) disease and xerostomia (dry mouth). When left untreated, these oral health conditions may progress and lead to tooth ache, abscesses and tooth loss, and in turn, to poor chewing functioning and digestion, dental aesthetic problems and reduced wellbeing. Illicit drug use may, per se, cause xerostomia, which in turn increases vulnerability for dental caries. However, the other main drivers of oral diseases and their progression-poor oral hygiene, frequent

Dental diseases represent a significant global health concern, with traditional treatment methods often proving costly and lacking in long-term efficacy. Emerging research highlights nanoparticles as a promising, cost-effective therapeutic alternative, owing to their unique properties. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the application of antimicrobial and antioxidant nanoparticles in the management of dental diseases. Silver and gold nanoparticles have shown great potential for inhibiting biofilm formation and thus preventing dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

The incidence of eating disorders has increased substantially over the last forty years. Primary care physicians and dentists share a parallel challenge for secondary prevention of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The dentist, in particular, has a uniquely important and valuable role with respect to assessment of oral and physical manifestations, patient communication, referral, case management, and restorative care. Despite this crucial role, few dentists are engaged in eating disorder-specific secondary prevention. The purpose of this study was to explore beliefs, attitudes, and experie

The current climate of health care delivery emphasizes comprehensive care, with an increased focus on early detection of health risk, disease prevention, and health promotion with referral to specialty providers as needed. The integration of nutrition screening, basic diet education/counseling, and referral in dental practice fits with this climate. Shifting patterns in disease epidemiology, the advent of new therapies and drugs which impact nutrition and oral health status, and greater recognition of the relationship between nutrition and oral health provides dietetics and dental professional
