Relationships between Behavioural Addictions and Psychiatric Disorders: What Is Known and What Is Yet to Be Learned?

This article provides a narrative review of the relationships between several behavioural addictions [pathological gambling, problematic Internet use (PIU), problematic online gaming, compulsive sexual behaviour disorder, compulsive buying, and exercise addiction] and psychiatric disorders. Associations between most behavioural addictions and depressive and anxiety disorders are strong and seem relatively non-specific. Strong links with substance use disorders may support the notion that some people are more prone to addictive behaviours, regardless of whether these involve substances or probl

Scales to assess impulsive and compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease: Critique and recommendations.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) and related impulsive and compulsive behaviors (together called ICBs) have been increasingly recognized in the context of Parkinson's disease (PD) and treatment. The International Parkinson's and Movement Disorder Society commissioned a task force to assess available clinical screening instruments and rating scales, including their clinimetric properties, make recommendations regarding their utility, and suggest future directions in scale development and validation. The literature was systematically searched for scales measuring a range of reported ICBs in PD.

Long-Term Follow-up of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Symptom Severity and the Role of Exposure 8-10 Years After Inpatient Treatment.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be effectively treated by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP). Yet, little is known about the long-term effects of inpatient CBT up to one decade after treatment. Thirty patients who had been treated with 12 weeks of intensive inpatient CBT with ERP were examined 8-10 years after their stay in hospital with regard to obsessive-compulsive symptoms, secondary outcomes, and use of healthcare services. Significant (p < .001) improvements in OC symptoms with medium and large effects compared to baseline on the Yale-B

Relating Compulsivity and Impulsivity With Severity of Behavioral Addictions: A Dynamic Interpretation of Large-Scale Cross-Sectional Findings.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Impulsivity and compulsivity are two key temperament traits involved in behavior regulation. The aim of this study was to test several existing theories in explaining the role of impulsivity and compulsivity in symptom severity in various behavioral addictions. METHODS: Data were collected from a (representative) general population sample (N = 2,710, mean age:39.8 years (SD:13.6), 51% woman), and from people who are at increased risk of having a behavioral addiction (N = 9,528 in total, mean age: 28.11 (SD:8.3), 34.3% woman), including people with problematic gaming and in

[Sportstherapy for outpatients with eating disorders: a pilot project].

Many patients with Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa (AN, BN) engage in sport and physical activity in an excessive and compulsive manner, mostly to influence weight and shape. Many of them experience guilt in case of not exercising. However, sport and physical exercise can also have a positive effect on mental illness by influencing mood, sense of self-esteem and body experience. Until now, only few programs for eating disorder patients exist which aim at changing physical activity behavior and use sport and exercise activities in a therapeutic way. We developed a sport-therapeutic program designe

An unhealthy health behavior: analysis of orthorexic tendencies among Hungarian gym attendees.

AIM: In the present study, we aim to assess the prevalence and certain psychological and other correlates of orthorexic tendencies: health and exercise behaviors and demographic variables among gym attendees in Hungary. METHODS: Altogether, responses of 207 gym attendees who filled out an online questionnaire (03/2017-10/2017) were analyzed. The mean age was 31.9 years; most were female and college educated, and about half resided in the capital city. Frequencies and means were calculated for the sample; and univariate linear regression and ANOVA were carried out. Finally, multivariate linear

Irisin/BDNF pathway dysfunction subserves anorexia nervosa pathophysiology.

Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) often exhibit a heightened sense of reward associated with self-imposed starvation and excessive exercise in their pursuit of weight loss, which perpetuates maladaptive behaviors and negative health outcomes. A key feature of AN is compulsive physical activity, which exacerbates malnutrition and worsens clinical outcomes; however, the limited understanding of AN neurobiology has so far hindered the development of effective treatments. In this work, we hypothesized that AN may be sustained by an altered crosstalk between skeletal muscle and the brain induced

Psychotherapies and digital interventions for OCD in adults: What do we know, what do we need still to explore?

BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in the understanding and treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), current treatment options are limited in terms of efficacy for symptom remission. Thus, assessing the potential role of iterative or alternate psychotherapies is important. Also, the potential role of digital technologies to enhance the accessibility of these therapies, should not be underestimated. We also need to embrace the idea of a more personalized treatment choice, being cognisant of clinical, genetic and neuroimaging predictors of treatment response. PROCEDURES: Non-syst

Correlates of suicidal ideation in college women with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) in a large sample of college women with eating disorders (EDs). METHOD: A total of 690 female college students from 28 US colleges who screened positive for an ED, with the exception of anorexia nervosa, were assessed for SI. Univariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine independent correlates of SI. Measures included: ED psychopathology, ED behaviors (i.e., binge eating, vomiting, laxatives, compulsive exercise), current co-morbid psychopathology (i.e., depression, anxiety, insomnia), weight/shape concerns,

Low Dopamine D2 Receptor Increases Vulnerability to Obesity Via Reduced Physical Activity, Not Increased Appetitive Motivation.

BACKGROUND: The dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) has received much attention in obesity studies. Data indicate that D2R is reduced in obesity and that the TaqA1 D2R variant may be more prevalent among obese persons. It is often suggested that reduced D2R generates a reward deficiency and altered appetitive motivation that induces compulsive eating and contributes to obesity. Although dopamine is known to regulate physical activity, it is often neglected in these studies, leaving open the question of whether reduced D2R contributes to obesity through alterations in energy expenditure and activity. A cross-sectional study on compulsive behaviour (stable vices) in horses.

A researcher-administered survey study was performed involving 769 horses from 32 Thoroughbred, Standardbred, and pleasure horse stables in southwestern Ontario. Data were gathered on individuals (breed, age, and sex) and at the stable level (housing, management). The effects of these factors on cribbing, stall-walking, weaving, stall-kicking, tongue playing, and pawing were assessed by unconditional analysis (Chi-square, t test) and conditionally using stepwise logistic regression. Individual level factors had significant effects on most compulsive behaviours. Some stable level factors, in mo

More than a symptom: qualitative exploration of embodied control and restlessness in compulsive movement in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive physical activity is a common but underexplored feature of eating disorders (ED). Beyond calorie expenditure, it often serves complex psychological, symbolic, and embodied functions. Understanding how these behaviors are experienced and change during treatment can guide more effective interventions. This study explored the lived experience of compulsive movement in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), and examined whether diagnosis or duration influenced narrative change during inpatient care. METHODS: Sixty-five

Predicting eating disorder and anxiety symptoms using disorder-specific and transdiagnostic polygenic scores for anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Clinical, epidemiological, and genetic findings support an overlap between eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and anxiety symptoms. However, little research has examined the role of genetics in the expression of underlying phenotypes. We investigated whether the anorexia nervosa (AN), OCD, or AN/OCD transdiagnostic polygenic scores (PGS) predict eating disorder, OCD, and anxiety symptoms in a large developmental cohort in a sex-specific manner. METHODS: Using summary statistics from Psychiatric Genomics Consortium AN and OCD genome-wide association studies, we

Attitudes toward physical activity as a treatment component for adolescents with anorexia nervosa: An exploratory qualitative study of patient perceptions.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) with compulsive exercise is associated with poor treatment outcomes. This study sought to understand the attitudes of adolescents with AN from various stages of treatment, toward physical activity research practices and physical activity as a component of treatment. METHOD: Seventeen adolescents 12-18 years old (15 female) with AN (10 with acknowledged history of compulsive exercise) were recruited from a Canadian Tertiary Care Hospital's Eating Disorder Program. Six inpatients, 5-day program patients, and six outpatients treated by either the inpatient and/or

A novel approach to challenging OCD related beliefs using a mobile-app: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: According to cognitive models, obsessive compulsive symptoms result from catastrophic misinterpretations of commonly occurring intrusive experiences and the use of counterproductive strategies to manage them. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) related beliefs such as inflated responsibility, importance of thoughts and perfectionism increases the likelihood of such misinterpretations. Consistent with a growing body of literature supporting the usefulness of mobile delivered technologies in fostering cognitive behavior change, the present study assessed the effectiven

Lifestyle Interventions in the Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Lifestyle medicine is increasingly important in psychiatry for its efficacy as a transdiagnostic treatment, its preventative potential, and its increased tolerability compared with first-line strategies. Although the impact of lifestyle medicine is strong across many psychiatric illnesses, our understanding of the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in treating obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) is minimal. We aimed to conduct a systematic review examining the effect of lifestyle interventions (targeting diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and tobacco/alco

Excessive steps: Physical activity patterns in pre-selected hospitalized patients with anorexia nervosa under physical activity restrictions.

A common factor in the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa (AN) is compulsive exercise, often driven by a desire for weight loss. In an inpatient clinical setting, patients with AN are typically restricted from engaging in exercise as part of their daily clinical routine to prevent weight loss. As individually practiced physical activity (PA) is a relevant parameter, the aim of this study was to measure PA behavior in an inpatient AN population and compare it with healthy controls. A total of 128 participants, 64 female patients with AN (20 ± 6.1 years) and 64 sex and age-matched healthy controls
