UNLABELLED: This is the first reported study to describe local bone mineral density, assess parameters of fracture risk and report history of fractures in adolescents with motor difficulties. Motor difficulties evidenced by poor coordination in adolescence should be considered a new risk factor for below-average bone strength and structure and fracture risk.
INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with motor difficulties are characterised by poor coordination and low levels of physical activity and fitness. It is possible these deficits translate into below-average bone strength and structure. The objectiv

UNLABELLED: Few studies have investigated factors influencing the precision of peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) measures. This study found time between repeat scans and subject anthropometric characteristics to influence short-term precision of pQCT-derived measures in the lower leg. These findings have implications for both investigators and clinicians utilizing pQCT outcomes.
INTRODUCTION: Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is increasingly being used to investigate musculoskeletal changes associated with age, disease and/or intervention. Precision of pQCT m

A computer model of the human cardiovascular system has been created based on Guyton's closed circuit analysis of the heart and the peripheral circulatory system. This model was checked against Guyton's experiments performed in anesthetised dogs regarding the normal venous return curve, the effect of mean circulatory filling pressure (MCFP) and the importance of arterial venous and capillary resistance. These comparisons indicate that this simple model is valid for the study of Guyton's experimental work and also forms the bases of a more complex model of the cardiovascular model with specific

Bone demineralization is a severe complication of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and other rheumatic diseases. To identify patients, who are at risk of bone disease, musculoskeletal analysis is performed. Furthermore, a more functional approach is needed to assess, whether bone strength is adequate for muscle force and whether muscle force is adequate for body size. In patients with a chronic disease it is most important to differentiate between primary bone problems and those that are secondary to low muscle force. To implement this approach, we measured musculoskeletal parameters of the

Turner syndrome (TS) is associated with multiple skeletal abnormalities. Fracture incidence appears to be increased, but the reasons for this are not entirely clear. In the present study, we used peripheral quantitative computed tomography to evaluate bone mass, density, geometry, and strength of the radial metaphysis and diaphysis as well as maximum forearm muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) in a group of 21 TS patients. These individuals were 19.5 +/- 2.3 yr of age (mean +/- SD; range, 16.2-25.4 yr) and had completed growth after having received GH therapy; all but one were receiving estrogen

Background: Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide. In recent years, several non-invasive imaging techniques have been introduced to improve the assessment of atherosclerotic burden and cardiovascular risk, including computed tomography and vascular ultrasound. Three-dimensional ultrasound has emerged as a promising method for the non-invasive quantification of plaque volume in peripheral arteries. Methods: In this prospective single-centre study, 63 patients with low to moderate cardiovascular risk (6-20% according to the Framingham Risk Score) were included.

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative localization of small peripheral pulmonary nodules can be challenging due to the size, characteristics, or depth of nodules. This study introduced a computed tomography (CT)-guided skin marking method and evaluated its feasibility and accuracy.
METHODS: From January 2017 to January 2026, 89 patients underwent CT-guided skin marking followed by wedge lung resection. Eligible nodules were located in the outer third of the lung and measured ≤ 1 cm in diameter or ≤ 2 cm in maximum diameter, with a consolidation-to-tumor ratio of ≤ 0.25 were considered eligible. CT-guided

Volumetric bone density, microarchitecture, and strength measures using HR-pQCT are valuable measures of bone health in pediatrics. Our cross-sectional study evaluated bone measure reproducibility in pediatric participants using repeat HR-pQCT (XtremeCT II, Scanco Medical) scans of non-dominant distal tibia and radius of 30 healthy children and adolescents (7-17 yr, 47% female) by 2 technicians. Additionally, we examined HR-pQCT and micro-CT of 26 cadaveric distal tibia specimens to evaluate agreement between the modalities. All HR-pQCT scans were analyzed using manufacturer-provided software

PURPOSE: The presence of severely calcified plaque remains problematic in endovascular therapy, and no specific endovascular treatment strategy has been established. Estimating plaque solidity before the procedure may help operators penetrate calcified plaque with a guide wire. The aim of this study was to establish a method of measuring plaque solidity with noncontrast computed tomography (CT).
METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included consecutive patients who, between October 2020 and July 2022, underwent noncontrast 5 mm and 1 mm CTs before endovascular therapy to penetrate

BACKGROUND: Both endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial biopsy (EBUS-TBB) and computed tomography-guided transthoracic needle biopsy (CT-TTNB) are approaches commonly utilized to diagnose peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs). The present meta-analysis was, therefore, designed to provide more reliable evidence regarding the relative advantages of these two approaches to PPL diagnosis in order to guide clinical decision making.
METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies published as of May 2020. Endpoint data pertaining to technical suc

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine whether oromaxillofacial computed tomography (CT) examination causes biologic damage in lymphocytes and whether the biologic damage is related to radiation dose, patient age, or gender.
STUDY DESIGN: Peripheral blood was taken from 51 individuals and divided into control, in vivo, and in vitro irradiation groups. Biologic damage was assessed by comparing rates of chromosomal aberrations (CAs), including dicentric chromosomes (dics), centric rings, and acentric fragments; and nuclear aberrations, including micronuclei (MN), nuclear buds (NBUDs),

This study aimed to evaluate the visualization of peripheral bronchioles in normal lungs via quarter-detector computed tomography (QDCT). Visualization of bronchioles within 10 mm from the pleura is considered a sign of bronchiectasis. However, it is not known peripheral bronchioles how close to the pleura in normal lungs can be tracked using QDCT. This study included 228 parts in 76 lungs from 38 consecutive patients who underwent QDCT. Reconstruction was performed with different thicknesses, increments, and matrix sizes: 0.5-mm thickness and increment with 512 and 1024 matrixes (Group5 and G

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing scaphoid fractures remains challenging. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) might be a potential imaging technique, but no data are available on its feasibility to scan the scaphoid bone in vivo.
METHODOLOGY: Patients (≥18 years) with a clinically suspected scaphoid fracture received an HR-pQCT scan of the scaphoid bone (three 10.2-mm stacks, 61-μm voxel size) with their wrist immobilized with a cast. Scan quality assessment and bone contouring were performed using methods originally developed for HR-pQCT scans of radius and tibia. Th

The accuracy of 16-row multidetector CT in the visualization of different peripheral artery stents and in the appraisal of in-stent stenosis was assessed. Nine different stent types (nitinol and stainless steel) with three diameters (6, 8 and 10 mm) were used; altogether 27 stents were analyzed in a barrel-shaped vascular model. Low-grade (<40%) and high-grade (>60%) in-stent stenoses were simulated by polyurethane sticks (70 HU) of differing diameters (2-6 mm). Imaging was performed with 16x0.75-mm detector collimation, 130 mAs, 120 kV, 12-mm table feed/rotation, 1.0-mm slice thickness and 0.

Generalized bone loss within the femoral neck accounts for only 15% of the increase in intracapsular hip fracture risk between the ages of 60 and 80 years. Conventional histology has shown that there is no difference in cancellous bone area between cases of intracapsular fracture and age and sex-matched controls. Rather, a loss of cortical bone thickness and increased porosity is the key feature with the greatest change occurring in those regions maximally loaded during a fall (the inferoanterior [IA] to superoposterior [SP] axis). We have now reexamined this finding using peripheral quantitat

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a major global health challenge, affecting more than 200 million people worldwide and an estimated 8 to 12 million in the United States. Its clinical spectrum ranges from intermittent claudication to chronic limb-threatening ischemia and acute limb ischemia. Accurate vascular imaging is essential for diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment planning, and postprocedural surveillance, guiding management from conservative therapy to endovascular or surgical revascularization. In this review, we aim to summarize the contemporary imaging pathways in PAD, focusing
