BACKGROUND: Imprecise articulation has a negative impact on speech intelligibility. Therefore, treatment of articulation is clinically relevant in patients with dysarthria. In order to be effective and according to the principles of motor learning, articulation therapy needs to be intensive, well organized, with adequate feedback and requires frequent practice.
AIMS: The aims of this pilot study are (1) to evaluate the feasibility of a virtual articulation therapy (VAT) to guide patients with dysarthria through a boost articulation therapy (BArT) program; (2) to evaluate the acoustic models'

Two key characteristics of all virtual reality applications are interaction and immersion. Systemic interaction is achieved through a variety of multisensory channels (hearing, sight, touch, and smell), permitting the user to interact with the virtual world in real time. Immersion is the degree to which a person can feel wrapped in the virtual world through a defined interface. Virtual reality interface devices such as the Nintendo® Wii and its peripheral nunchuks-balance board, head mounted displays and joystick allow interaction and immersion in unreal environments created from computer soft

PURPOSE: Brain-computer interface (BCI) inefficiency limits clinical utilization of BCIs, as many users struggle to produce consistent machine-recognizable electroencephalography (EEG) patterns for reliable control. While training can improve BCI performance for most users, the required duration and intensity may hinder BCI accessibility. Prior BCI and motor learning research suggests that feedback enabling efficient exploration of different task strategies may enhance training.
METHODS: An eight-session BCI training case study was completed with an adolescent participant with paraplegia. To

Over the past few years, positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging for computer-aided diagnosis has received increasing attention. Supervised deep learning architectures are usually employed for the detection of abnormalities, with anatomical localization, especially in the case of CT scans. However, the main limitations of the supervised learning paradigm include (i) large amounts of data required for model training, and (ii) the assumption of fixed network weights upon training completion, implying that the performance of the model cannot be further improved after tra

Simulations offer safe environments for medical students to practice and develop skills (e.g., clinical, telemedicine). We previously usability tested a gestational hypertension telemedicine simulation to train obstetrics and family medicine residents (Round 1; n = 6). In this study, the next iteration, we revised the simulation and conducted another usability test. Our research questions were: (1) will faculty observers be able assess learner performance in the simulation using our evaluation rubric, and (2) are there remaining scenario, technology, or rubric issues that will complicate the s

The goal of the study was assessment of the hour-long training involving handling virtual environment (sVR) and watching a stereoscopic 3D movie on the mechanisms of autonomic heart rate (HR) regulation among the subjects who were not predisposed to motion sickness. In order to exclude predispositions to motion sickness, all the participants (n=19) underwent a Coriolis test. During an exposure to 3D and sVR the ECG signal was continuously recorded using the Holter method. For the twelve consecutive 5-min epochs of ECG signal, the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in time and frequency d

PURPOSE: The present descriptive case study documents the behaviours of a child single-switch user in the community setting and draws attention to learning and mastery behaviours as risk factors to single-switch abandonment. Our observations were interpreted in the context of a longer term school-based evaluation of an advanced single-switch access technology with a nine year-old user with severe spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
METHOD: The child completed 25 experiment sessions averaging a rate of three sessions every two weeks. During each session he worked on several blocks of single-s

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) have been developed to allow users to communicate with the external world by translating brain activity into control signals. Motor imagery (MI) has been a popular paradigm in BCI control where the user imagines movements of e.g., their left and right limbs and classifiers are then trained to detect such intent directly from electroencephalography (EEG) signals. For some users, however, it is difficult to elicit patterns in the EEG signal that can be detected with existing features and classifiers. As such, new user control strategies and training paradigms have

The body-weight support (BWS) function, which helps to decrease load stresses on a user, is an effective tool for gait and balance rehabilitation training for elderly people with weakened lower-extremity muscular strength, hemiplegic patients, etc. This study conducts structural analysis to secure user safety in order to develop a rail-type gait and balance rehabilitation training system (RRTS). The RRTS comprises a rail, trolley, and brain-machine interface. The rail (platform) is connected to the ceiling structure, bearing the loads of the RRTS and of the user and allowing locomobility. In normal-hearing (NH) adults, long-term music training may benefit music and speech perception, even when listening to spectro-temporally degraded signals as experienced by cochlear implant (CI) users. In this study, we compared two different music training approaches in CI users and their effects on speech and music perception, as it remains unclear which approach to music training might be best. The approaches differed in terms of music exercises and social interaction. For the pitch/timbre group, melodic contour identification (MCI) training was performed using computer software. For the m

Deep neural networks have led to significant advancements in microscopy image generation and analysis. In single-molecule localization based super-resolution microscopy, neural networks are capable of predicting fluorophore positions from high-density emitter data, thus reducing acquisition time, and increasing imaging throughput. However, neural network-based solutions in localization microscopy require intensive human intervention and computation expertise to address the compromise between model performance and its generalization. For example, researchers manually tune parameters to generate

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants can provide auditory perception to many people with hearing impairment who derive insufficient benefits from hearing aid use. For optimal speech perception with a cochlear implant, postoperative auditory training is necessary to adapt the brain to the new sound transmitted by the implant. Currently, this training is usually conducted via face-to-face sessions in rehabilitation centers. With the aging of society, the prevalence of age-related hearing loss and the number of adults with cochlear implants are expected to increase. Therefore, augmenting face-to-face re

This paper explores positive and negative features of computer assisted therapy (CAT) delivered by mentors to homeless drug users (HDUs) living in hostels. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 HDUs and 15 mentors (all hostel staff) at the beginning and end of a 12-week CAT program. Findings indicate that successful delivery of the CAT relates to: 'program features' (e.g. its accessibility, flexibility, user-friendly interface); 'delivery context' (e.g. privacy, having appropriate computing equipment), 'client characteristics' (HDUs being recovery-focused and committed to using the pro

With recent advances in computer vision, many applications based on artificial intelligence have been developed to facilitate the diagnosis of rare genetic disorders through the analysis of patients' two-dimensional frontal images. Some of these have been implemented on online platforms with user-friendly interfaces and provide facial analysis services, such as Face2Gene. However, users cannot run the facial analysis processes in house because the training data and the trained models are unavailable. This article therefore provides an introduction, designed for users with programming backgroun

A survey of 67 experienced orthopedic surgeons indicated that precise portal placement was the most important skill in arthroscopic surgery. However, none of the currently available virtual reality simulators include simulation / training in portal placement, including haptic feedback of the necessary puncture force. This study aimed to: (1) measure the in vivo force and stiffness during a portal placement procedure in an actual operating room and (2) implement active haptic simulation of a portal placement procedure using the measured in vivo data. We measured the force required for port plac

Brain-computer interface (BCI) system offers an alternative or supplementary means of interaction for individuals with disabilities. P300 speller is a commonly utilized BCI system due to its high stability, and reliability and without intensive user training. Nevertheless, the inherent class imbalance within P300 datasets predisposes the system to overfit, potentially impacting the classification performances. Existing class rebalancing methods mainly rely on resampling or adjusting the class weight with a fixed value, thus it is still tricky to ensure that the output is evenly balanced. To mi
