[Concept and implementation of an adaptive digital hearing training system for cochlear implant aftercare].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Within the context of an interdisciplinary research project, we created a cutting-edge prototype of an adaptive digital auditory training system designed for cochlear implant (CI) users. By leveraging the evidence-centered design (ECD) framework, we integrated a dynamic difficulty adjustment feature that tailors the experience to the unique performance capabilities of each individual user. METHODS: The ECD provides a conceptual design framework suitable for complex assessments of competence and dynamic performance. In the first phase, the domain of hearing was first

Usability Testing an Educational Telemedicine Simulation: Description of Methods and Preliminary Findings.

Simulations are often used in medical education to practice developing skills in low-stakes situations. We created a telemedicine simulation for residents in obstetrics, gynaecology, and family medicine to teach best practices in telehealth care. We wrote a case of a patient with gestational hypertension that tested resident performance in eight published telehealth competencies. Given the project's complexity, we conducted a usability test before piloting. Combining several user testing methods standard to interface usability testing, we identified and remedied critical usability issues befor

Unlocking Morphology: A Case Study of Morphological Knowledge Growth in a Deaf Student Using Computer-Delivered Intervention.

Morphological knowledge (MK), or awareness of word structure and morphemic relationships, is a critical component of literacy for students who are D/HH. However, it has been explored to a lesser extent than other literacy components, such as phonological awareness and vocabulary. This case study examined the responsiveness of an 11-year-old bilingual student who is deaf to a computer-delivered supplemental morphology intervention, the Morphological Analysis Pathway to Reading (MAP-R). Over 22 weeks, the student completed 22 online modules targeting derivational affixes and root-word relationsh

e-Learning in Phoniatrics and Speech-Language Pathology: Exploratory Analysis of Free Access Tools in Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

BACKGROUND: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a therapeutic approach and modality of expression for patients with limited or no expressive language. Speech-language pathologists and phoniatricians need to be competent in AAC to treat patients with complex communication needs. For knowledge acquisition and enhancement in AAC, a significant number of e-learning tools are available. To improve e-learning in AAC, it is essential to understand the attributes of these tools, such as formats, content areas, learning styles, or learning goals. However, these structures have yet to be

E-learning is a burden for the deaf and hard of hearing.

When considering deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) population, research recognizes that fatigue due to communication challenges and multi-focal attention allocation is a significant concern. Given the putative heightened demands of distance learning on deaf and hard of hearing students, we investigate how an online environment might differently affect deaf and hard of hearing participants, compared to hearing participants, Portuguese Sign Language (PSL) users and non-users. Our findings show that the deaf and hard of hearing group present higher values in the post-task fatigue rates with signific

Preparing for obstetric anaesthesia-An educational randomised controlled trial comparing e-learning to written course material.

BACKGROUND: E-learning is increasingly used in postgraduate medical education. Its numerous benefits include an enhanced learning experience through learning style individualisation, interactive elements, and assessment through tests and quizzes. Current meta-analyses conclude that the overall effectiveness of e-learning is comparable to traditional teaching modalities. However, studies demonstrating its benefits are heterogeneous and of varying quality. This randomised controlled trial aims to investigate whether contemporary e-learning completed prior to a course in obstetric anaesthesia pre

Speech and Language Therapists' Perspectives of an E-Learning Course on Providing Feedback in the Clinical Learning Environment.

BACKGROUND: A fundamental component of supervising a student speech and language therapist (SLT) on placement is the provision of feedback. There are numerous identified challenges to ensure the delivery of high-quality feedback to optimise student learning and student success. Supervisors can help overcome these challenges and engage in evidence-based feedback processes if they are supported to develop the necessary knowledge and skills. E-learning is one possible means to provide this professional development to a large number of practising SLTs who are geographically dispersed and have conf

Teaching undergraduates about familial breast cancer: comparison of a computer assisted learning (CAL) package with a traditional tutorial approach.

We have developed a computer assisted learning package for teaching clinical medical students about familial breast cancer. It explains the principles of genetic predisposition to breast cancer, the association with other cancers, the principles of family history taking and confirmation, risk assessment and possible interventions. Clinical medical students were randomised to either conventional teaching or CAL, 48 students attended the evaluation session. Students randomised to conventional teaching received a 20 min mini-lecture, those randomised to CAL completed the package with technical, b

Cardiac auscultatory recording database: delivering heart sounds through the Internet.

The clinical skill of cardiac auscultation, while known to be sensitive, specific, and inexpensive in screening for cardiac disease among children, has recently been shown to be deficient among residents in training. This decline in clinical skill is partly due to the difficulty in teaching auscultation. Standardization, depth, and breadth of experience has been difficult to reproduce for students due to time constraints and the impracticality of examining large numbers of patients with cardiac pathology. We have developed a web-based multimedia platform that delivers complete heart sound reco

The LISS--a public database of common imaging signs of lung diseases for computer-aided detection and diagnosis research and medical education.

Lung computed tomography (CT) imaging signs play important roles in the diagnosis of lung diseases. In this paper, we review the significance of CT imaging signs in disease diagnosis and determine the inclusion criterion of CT scans and CT imaging signs of our database. We develop the software of abnormal regions annotation and design the storage scheme of CT images and annotation data. Then, we present a publicly available database of lung CT imaging signs, called LISS for short, which contains 271 CT scans and 677 abnormal regions in them. The 677 abnormal regions are divided into nine categ

Enhancing word signing in hearing students with reading disorders using computer-based learning trials.

Multiple-baseline-across-word-sets designs were used to determine whether a computer-based intervention would enhance accurate word signing with four participants. Each participant was a hearing college student with reading disorders. Learning trials included 3 s to observe printed words on the screen and a video model performing the sign twice (i.e., simultaneous prompting), 3 s to make the sign, 3 s to observe the same clip, and 3 s to make the sign again. For each participant and word set, no words were accurately signed during baseline. After the intervention, all four participants increas
