Preliminary validation of the computerized N-Tri - A Tri-Choice naming and response bias test.

The study describes the validation of a computerized adaptation of the novel Tri-Choice Naming and Response Bias Measure (N-Tri) developed to detect untruthful responding while being less susceptible to coaching than existing measures. We hypothesized that the N-Tri would have comparable sensitivity and specificity to traditional tests but would have improved accuracy for detecting coached simulators. Four-hundred volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three groups: uncoached simulators' group (n = 118), coached simulators' group (n = 136), or control group (n = 146). Both simulator group

Modified Application of Cardiac Rehabilitation in Older Adults (MACRO) Trial: Protocol changes in a pragmatic multi-site randomized controlled trial in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease and functional decline, often leading to deterioration and dependency. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) provides opportunity to improve clinical and functional recovery, yet participation in CR decreases with age. Modified Application of CR in Older Adults (MACRO) is a National Institute on Aging (NIA)-funded pragmatic trial that responds to this gap by aiming to increase enrollment of older adults into CR and improving functional outcomes. This article describes the methodology and novel features of the MACRO trial. METHODS: R

The Spanish version of the computerized dynamic test of analogical reasoning.

PURPOSE: Analogical reasoning (AR), a key skill developing throughout childhood, enables the transfer of relational structures across contexts, facilitating the integration of new knowledge with prior understanding. Children with learning difficulties (LD) may perform less effectively on AR tasks that involve written instructions or abstract verbal analogies, due to their literacy difficulties in processing linguistic information. This study aims to analyze the suitability of the Spanish version of the Computerized Dynamic Test of Analogical Reasoning for testing AR and learning potential in c

Preterm children's long-term academic performance after adaptive computerized training: an efficacy and process analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive computerized interventions may help improve preterm children's academic success, but randomized trials are rare. We tested whether a math training (XtraMath®) versus an active control condition (Cogmed®; working memory) improved school performance. Training feasibility was also evaluated. METHODS: Preterm born first graders, N = 65 (28-35 + 6 weeks gestation) were recruited into a prospective randomized controlled multicenter trial and received one of two computerized trainings at home for 5 weeks. Teachers rated academic performance in math, reading/writing, and attentio

An Adaptive Design for Item Parameter Online Estimation and Q-Matrix Online Calibration in CD-CAT.

The implementation of cognitive diagnostic computerized adaptive testing often depends on a high-quality item bank. How to online estimate the item parameters and calibrate the Q-matrix required by items becomes an important problem in the construction of the high-quality item bank for personalized adaptive learning. The related previous research mainly focused on the calibration method with the random design in which the new items were randomly assigned to examinees. Although the way of randomly assigning new items can ensure the randomness of data sampling, some examinees cannot provide enou

Comparing Scores From Full Length, Short Form, and Adaptive Tests of the Social Interaction Anxiety and Social Phobia Scales.

The current study developed and examined the performance of a computerized adaptive version of the Social Interaction Anxiety and Social Phobia Scales (SIAS/SPS) and compared results with a previously developed static short form (SIAS-6/SPS-6) in terms of measurement precision, concordance with the full forms, and sensitivity to treatment. Among an online sample of Australian adults, there were relatively minor differences in the performance of the adaptive tests and static short forms when compared with the full scales. Moreover, both adaptive and static short forms generated similar effect s

Development and Calibration of the PREMIUM Item Bank for Measuring Respect and Dignity for Patients with Severe Mental Illness.

Most patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) are paper-based, leading to a high burden for patients and care providers. The aim of this study was to (1) calibrate an item bank to measure patients' experience of respect and dignity for adult patients with serious mental illnesses and (2) develop computerized adaptive testing (CAT) to improve the use of this PREM in routine practice. Patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder were enrolled in this multicenter and cross-sectional study. Psychometric analyses were based on classical test and item response the

Test-Retest Reliability of a Computerized Neurocognitive Battery in School-Age Children with HIV in Botswana.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is prevalent among children and adolescents in Botswana, but standardized neurocognitive testing is limited. The Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (PennCNB) attempts to streamline evaluation of neurocognitive functioning and has been culturally adapted for use among youth in this high-burden, low-resource setting. However, its reliability across measurements (i.e., test-retest reliability) is unknown. This study examined the test-retest reliability of the culturally adapted PennCNB in 65 school-age children (age 7-17) living with HIV in Botsw

Standardization of the Computerized Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children (BENCI) in an urban setting, in Kenya: a study protocol.

OBJECTIVE: In sub Saharan Africa one of the key challenges in assessment using neuropsychological tools has been the lack of adequately validated and easily implementable measures. This study will translate into English, adapt and standardize the Computerized Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children (BENCI). The BENCI battery will be adapted using back-translation design, comprehensive cultural adaptation and standardized in a case-control study involving two groups of children: HIV infected and HIV unexposed, uninfected children. The content adaptation will be iteratively carried

Effects of Concussion on Sensorimotor Adaptation to Unpredictable Spring-Like Loads: A Pilot Study.

We examined how concussion impacts sensorimotor memories used to adapt goal-directed reaches to unpredictable hand-held loads. Recently concussed individuals underwent computerized cognition testing and a robotic test of sensorimotor adaptation as soon as possible after injury, on return to activity, and after three months. Control subjects were tested at similar intervals. During robotic testing, subjects moved a robot handle repeatedly between two targets; the handle resisted movement with spring-like forces that changed unpredictably between trials, allowing us to model how performance memo

Automated measurement of resolution acuity in infants using remote eye-tracking.

PURPOSE: To validate a novel, automated test of infant resolution acuity based on remote eye-tracking. METHODS: Infants aged 2 to 12 months were tested binocularly using a new adaptive computerized test of infant vision using eye tracking (ACTIVE), and Keeler infant acuity cards (KIAC). The ACTIVE test ran automatically, using remote eye-tracking to assess whether the infant fixated a black-and-white grating of variable spatial frequency. Test-retest reliability was assessed by performing each test twice. Accuracy was assessed by comparing acuity measures across tests and with established age

Cross-cultural development of an item list for computer-adaptive testing of fatigue in oncological patients.

IntroductionWithin an ongoing project of the EORTC Quality of Life Group, we are developing computerized adaptive test (CAT) measures for the QLQ-C30 scales. These new CAT measures are conceptualised to reflect the same constructs as the QLQ-C30 scales. Accordingly, the Fatigue-CAT is intended to capture physical and general fatigue.MethodsThe EORTC approach to CAT development comprises four phases (literature search, operationalisation, pre-testing, and field testing). Phases I-III are described in detail in this paper. A literature search for fatigue items was performed in major medical data

Interactive Computer-Adaptive Chronic Kidney Disease (I-C-CKD) Education for Hospitalized African American Patients: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) or kidney failure is a condition where the kidneys lose the ability to function. African American individuals are 4 times as likely to develop ESKD compared to White American individuals. In addition, African American patients are less likely to have an optimal dialysis start and to choose renal replacement therapy modalities that align with their goals and values. Our prior work shows that culturally tailored, in-person education improves patient outcomes. This is the foundation for our innovative intervention using an African American virtual patie

Prospective Assessment of Depression and Anxiety Trajectories Among Emergency Department Patients with Somatic Complaints.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency department (ED) patients exhibit higher rates of depression than those in primary care and the general population, but it is unclear whether these symptoms reflect chronic conditions or transient responses to acute stress. Our objective in this study was to evaluate the longitudinal trajectory of depression and anxiety identified in the ED to inform evidence-based screening and intervention strategies. METHODS: Adult, English-speaking ED patients with adequate literacy who presented to two urban academic EDs with somatic (non-psychiatric) chief complaints completed six

Evaluation of the validity of a maximum likelihood adaptive staircase procedure for measurement of olfactory detection threshold in mice.

Threshold is defined as the stimulus intensity necessary for a subject to reach a specified percent correct on a detection test. MLPEST (maximum likelihood parameter estimation by sequential testing) is a method that is able to determine threshold accurately and more rapidly than many other methods. Originally developed for human auditory and visual tasks, it has been adapted for human olfactory and gustatory tests. In order to utilize this technique for olfactory testing in mice, we have adapted MLPEST methodology for use with computerized olfactometry as a tool to estimate odor detection thr

Relationship between intelligence quotient measures and computerized neurocognitive performance in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Intelligence quotient (IQ) testing is standard for evaluating cognitive abilities in genomic studies but requires professional expertise in administration and interpretation, and IQ scores do not translate into insights on implicated brain systems that can link genes to behavior. Individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) often undergo IQ testing to address special needs, but access to testing in resource-limited settings is challenging. The brief Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (CNB) provides measures of cognitive abilities related to brain systems and can screen for cogn
