Parenting Style and Emotional Distress Among Chinese College Students: A Potential Mediating Role of the Zhongyong Thinking Style.

Previous studies suggested that parenting style was associated with college student's emotional distress. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of this relation in Chinese culture. The present study investigated the associations between parenting style and college student's emotional distress (depression and anxiety symptoms), examined the mediating effects of Confucian personality-Zhongyong thinking, and explored whether gender, age, and socioeconomic status (SES) moderated the direct and/or indirect effects of parenting style on emotional distress. Results from a large rep

Attitudes of intensive care nurses towards brain death and organ transplantation: instrument development and testing.

AIMS: This paper reports the development and testing of an instrument assessing attitudes of Korean intensive care unit nurses. BACKGROUND: Reluctance by healthcare professionals to identify brain-dead patients as a potential donor is one reason for a shortfall in transplantable organs in all countries. Organ donation from brain-dead patients is a particularly contentious issue in Korea, following recent legal recognition of brain death within the cultural context of Confucian beliefs. METHOD: A 38-item instrument was developed from the literature and key informant interviews, and validated

Negotiating Intimacy and Silence: Family Disclosure Strategies Among Young Chinese Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV.

This study examines how young Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV navigate the disclosure or concealment of their sexual orientation and HIV status within family contexts shaped by Confucian moral norms. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 24 participants and a constructivist grounded theory approach, the study identifies five disclosure strategies: prior disclosure of sexual orientation followed by HIV disclosure, prior disclosure of sexual orientation with withheld HIV disclosure, simultaneous disclosure of both identities, non-disclosure of both identities, and HIV discl

Agentic AI as a dual-role lecturer and teaching assistant: effects on learner autonomy, self-regulated learning, and intrinsic motivation in university-level EFL education.

Large language model (LLM)-powered agentic systems are increasingly deployed in higher education, yet their effects on learner autonomy and self-regulated learning (SRL) remain empirically underexamined. This 16-week quasi-experimental study evaluated a dual-role Agentic AI-an AI Lecturer paired with an adaptive AI Teaching Assistant-embedded in Uedu.tw, a university EFL platform in Taiwan, drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development. Participants were 120 Taiwanese B1 undergraduates (60 experimental, 60 control) assigned by intact class with a single

Induced abortion in the world: 1. Perception of abortion throughout the centuries and by religions.

Induced abortion has religious, moral, and cultural dimensions that place it at the center of major ethical debates. The interest of women caught in the middle of this never-ending controversy requires that a dialogue replaces current confrontation. To promote such dialogue, we decided to write a mini-series to review important aspects of abortion. First, we will turn to history to explore the root of the controversy, which may enable the disentangling of the complexity of the issue. In the second essay we describe how the 20th century witnessed the progressive legalization of abortion. In the

Cultural contributions to adults' self-rated mental health problems and strengths: 7 culture clusters, 28 societies, 16 906 adults.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown how much variation in adult mental health problems is associated with differences between societal/cultural groups, over and above differences between individuals. METHODS: To test these relative contributions, a consortium of indigenous researchers collected Adult Self-Report (ASR) ratings from 16 906 18- to 59-year-olds in 28 societies that represented seven culture clusters identified in the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavioral Effectiveness study (e.g. Confucian, Anglo). The ASR is scored on 17 problem scales, plus a personal strengths scale. Hierarchi

Effect of grief counseling on psychological distress and negative emotions among family members of patients with terminal tumors.

BACKGROUND: Grief counseling has become relatively established and is widely used among the families of cancer patients, effectively alleviating their psychological pain. However, in China, due to the influence of Confucianism and other traditional cultures, people generally adhere to the belief of "reincarnation to avoid death", focusing more on themes of life, such as eugenics and longevity, and paying less attention to matters related to death, including death education and grief counseling. Currently, grief counseling in China is still in an exploratory stage, and there is relatively littl

Financial compensation for deceased organ donation in China.

In March 2010, China launched a pilot programme of deceased donor organ donation in 10 provinces and cities. However, the deceased donor donation rate in China remains significantly lower than in Spain and other Western countries. In order to provide incentive for deceased donor organ donation, five pilot provinces and cities have subsequently launched a financial compensation policy. Financial compensation can be considered to include two main forms, the 'thank you' form and the 'help' form. The 'thank you' form is an expression of gratitude on behalf of the Red Cross Society of China for con

[Legendary Hwa Tuo's surgery under general anesthesia in the second century China].

In traditional Chinese medicine, Hwa Tuo (110 ? - 208 A.D.) is one of the most famous doctors. He used only few herbs in drug treatment or applied few points in acupuncture, and achieved excellent results. His ultimate fame came from his remarkable surgical skills and his discovery of general anesthesia. According to the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms (ca. 270 A.D.) and the Annals of the Later Han Dynasty (ca. 430 A.D.), Hwa Tuo performed operations under general anesthesia and the operations even included major ones such as dissection of gangrenous intestines. Before the surgery, he gave pat

Moral dilemma of family caregivers of urostomy patients: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The most prevalent malignant tumor of the urinary system, bladder cancer, exhibits a rising global incidence rate. However, recent diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, such as ostomy surgery, can effectively prolong patient survival. The majority of patients require support from family carers, presenting considerable challenges to these caregivers. Although existing research has primarily focused on patients' physiological adaptation, quality of life, and the burden on family carers, the moral dilemmas faced by these caregivers have not been explored yet. PURPOSE: This study aim

Do I feel elevated? Unraveling the emotional and value-based mechanisms behind humble leadership.

INTRODUCTION: Humble leadership is increasingly recognized as a catalyst for organizational adaptability. Although prior research has examined several cognitive, relational, and affective mechanisms underlying humble leadership, less is known about whether humble leadership evokes specific self-transcendent moral emotions, such as elevation, that motivate followers to engage in risky but prosocial voice behavior. Departing from traditional exchange-based leadership perspectives, this study draws on Affective Events Theory to conceptualize humble leadership as a "moral event" that elicits eleva

Creating Meanings Through Online End-of-Life Discussions: Qualitative Text Analyses of Death Discussions on Trending Chinese Social Media.

As an unavoidable topic for humankind, mentioning death is considered disrespectful and unlucky in Asia. Refusing to discuss death could lead to unhealthy perspectives about the topic and could negatively impact sociocultural well-being. Instead of face-to-face discussions about death, posting and sharing about personal views on the topic in social media could provide a more acceptable approach in such societies, as social media platforms have gradually become spaces for health-related discussions and information. With few studies which have examined how death topic discourse is occurring in A
