Analysis of Inner Ear Anomalies in Unilateral Congenital Aural Atresia Combined With Microtia.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence of inner ear anomalies in patients with unilateral congenital aural atresia (CAA) combined with microtia. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 61 patients with unilateral CAA combined with microtia who underwent high-resolution temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT) and hearing examination. Inner ear anomalies were analyzed using TBCT and evaluated according to the Jahrsdoerfer grading system, Marx classification, and extent of inferior displacement of the mastoid tegmen. RESULTS: Inner ear anomalies were observed in 14 patient

Congenital Microtia Treated at Sapporo Medical University Hospital: Clinical Characteristics and Associated Anomalies.

Seventy-three children who underwent plastic surgery for their external ear malformations between December 2010 and May 2013 at the Sapporo Medical University Hospital were evaluated. The predominance of right-sided malformation (62%) in males (71%) was similar to that reported previously, but the number of bilateral cases (9.3%) was lower than that in previous reports. We classified patients' ears using Marx's classification. The pure-tone average (average air conduction thresholds measured at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz) was used as the representative value for the hearing level, which was compa

Pure skin perforator flap for microtia and congenital aural atresia using supermicrosurgical techniques.

UNLABELLED: Microtia or pinna deformities with congenital aural atresia are severe conditions that significantly affect the quality of life. Although several surgical treatments have been proposed for aural atresia, revision surgery is often required to address complications associated with the initial procedure, which include external auditory canal stenosis, lateralization of the tympanic membrane and chronic recurrent otorrhea. However, such problems may be addressed by using vascularized skin. We herein report a new method of reconstruction for congenital aural atresia in three cases using

Total auricular reconstruction with autogenous costal cartilage framework for congenital microtia (grade-III).

The Auricular deformity of congenital microtia (Grade-llll can cause devastating physical and psychological trauma in children. liven crude duplications of the normal ear are of great emotional value to the child or adult who is horn with only a nubbin. Diverse materials ranging from altografts (polyethylene, nylon mesh. Teflon. Silicone, etc), cartilage homo and hcterografts haw been tried for framework construction of the ear. Converge (1985) and Tanzer (1959) popularized the use of autogenous rib cartilage, carved in a solid block. We describe our experience with autogenous costal cartilage

Contemporary solutions for patients with microtia and congenital aural atresia - Hong Kong experience.

Managing microtia patients is always a challenge. Multidisciplinary approach, good family support, well established doctor-patient relationship and well organised patient-support groups are the essential elements for success. With the advancement of implantable hearing devices, more options will be available for the microtia patients. Otologists play a leading role in the whole management process. They not only provide proper guidance to the patients in choosing the correct path of the treatment, but also play a key role in organising and maintaining a cost-effective multidisciplinary rehabili

Two-stage reconstruction of the auricle in congenital microtia using autogenous costal cartilage.

The current authors reconstructed the auricles of congenital microtia patients with a two-stage method using autogenous costal cartilage. In the first stage, lobule rotation, fabrication of the cartilage framework, and implantation of the framework were performed. In the second stage, elevation of the auricle using transplantation of the costal cartilage and two local transposition flaps, formation of the tragus, and deepening of the concha were performed. A total of 125 consecutive patients were treated, ranging from seven to 53 years old, from 1990 to 2003. Sixty-nine patients were males and

Search for a genetic cause in children with unilateral isolated microtia and congenital aural atresia.

PURPOSE: Microtia describes a spectrum of auricular malformations ranging from mild dysplasia to anotia. A vast majority of microtia patients demonstrate congenital aural atresia (CAA). Isolated microtia has a right ear predominance (58-61%) and is more common in the male sex. Isolated microtia is a multifactorial condition involving genetic and environmental causes. The aim of this study is to describe the phenotype of children with unilateral isolated microtia and CAA, and to search for a common genetic cause trough DNA analysis. METHODS: Phenotyping included a complete clinical examination

Reconstruction of congenital microtia-atresia: outcomes with the Medpor/bone-anchored hearing aid-approach.

Ideal surgery for congenital microtia-atresia would offer excellent cosmetic and hearing rehabilitation, with minimal morbidity. Classic approaches require multiple procedures, including rib cartilage harvest and aural atresia repair. Our facial plastic and otologic team approach incorporates a high-density porous polyethylene (Medpor, Porex Surgical, Newnan, GA) auricular framework, followed by single-stage bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) implantation. We evaluated the efficacy, safety, and morbidity of this 2-stage dual system approach. A prospective database of microtia patients was used t

Rating the aesthetic results after auricular reconstructive surgery for congenital aural atresia with microtia.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aimed to establish a robust rating system for assessing post-operative outcomes in congenital aural atresia patients undergoing auricular reconstruction. The newly introduced EAR scale, a weighted grading system, not only considers anatomical landmarks but also factors such as ear alignment. In addition, the outer-ear cartilage scale and the visual analogue scale (VAS) were introduced. These scales were compared among themselves and against two established scales. METHODS: Nine raters assessed 17 eligible patients who underwent auricular reconstruction betw
