[Conidiobolomycosis: a case report with histophathologic findings].

Conidiobolomycosis is a subcutaneous mycosis of the facial midline affecting primarily adult males. It is caused by the saprophytic fungus, Conodiobolus coronatus, present in soils and dried vegetables, characteristic of intertropical regions. C. coronatus belongs to the class Zygomycetes, order Entomophthorales; it is a fungus composed of thick, short hyphae that grows at temperatures between 30 degrees C and 37 degrees C and causes nasal granulomas. The histologic findings are described of a case of conidiobolomycosis in a 31-year-old male, born and resident in the Urabá region of Colombia.

Nasofacial zygomycosis.

Zygomycosis is an uncommon polymorphic fungal disease. One clinical subtype, nasofacial zygomycosis, is caused by infectious exposure to the organism Conidiobolus coronatus. A case affecting the nose and lips of a 42-year-old Malay man is reported here. The clinicopathologic features and management of this disease are described, and its differential diagnosis is discussed.

Rhino-orbitocerebral entomophthoramycosis.

Conidiobolus coronatus is recognized as a human pathogen causing subcutaneous fungal infection of the face in immunocompetent patients. The disease process is usually benign. We report, what we believe to be the first case of intracranial extension of C. coronatus producing rhino-orbitocerebral syndrome, and subsequent dissemination of C. coronatus in an immunocompetent patient.

Pediatric case of conidiobolomycosis: A rare entity.

Conidiobolomycosis caused by Conidiobolus species is an uncommon infection restricted to tropical and subtropical regions, usually affecting immunocompetent individuals. More than half of pediatric cases of conidiobolomycosis across the globe are from India. We report a case of subcutaneous conidiobolomycosis in an adolescent with development delay who responded to combined therapy with itraconazole and saturated solution of potassium iodide.

[5 new cases of entomophthoromycosis observed in Cameroon. Role of immunofluorescence in thr diagnosis].

The authors present five new cases of entomophthoromycosis observed during three years of histopathology in Cameroon. Three classic cases of rhinoentomophthoromycosis. In one case, Conidiobolus coronatus was isolated. Two cases of subcutaneous entomophthoromycosis, without isolation of the germ. In one observation, the clinical and histological aspect suggested mucormycosis post entomophthoromycosis. An immunofluorescence technique showed the Basidiobolus haptosporus to be the real cause.

Rhinofacial Conidiobolomycosis - A rare fungal infection of tropics.

Fungal sinusitis may be caused by filamentous fungi such as mucorales, aspergillus and entomophthorales. Mucormycosis and aspergillosis have immunocompromised states as specific risk factors, whereas entomophthorales may occur in apparently healthy persons having significant soil contact. This is, nonetheless, a rare condition with involvement of mucosa of the nose, para nasal sinuses and centrofacial soft tissues, without bony or angioinvasion. It grows relentlessly, however, and may mimic soft tissue neoplasm causing facial disfigurement.

Nasofacial phycomycosis: persistence pays.

Nasofacial phycomycosis caused by Conidiobolus is a rare fungal infection most often encountered in the developing world in conditions of poverty. A clinical presentation of the natural history of this condition observed over a period of 6 years by a visiting volunteer surgical team demonstrates the role of multimodality surgical and antifungal drug treatment in producing a successful outcome. The particular sensitivity of this infection to the new generation antifungal Voriconazole is noted.

Oral conidiobolomycosis in a dog.

Conidiobolomycosis was diagnosed via culture from an oral lesion in a 1.5-year-old German Shepherd dog. Clinically, the lesion consisted of a large, irregularly shaped, ulcerative focus on the caudal hard palate. Microscopically, the lesion was characterized by an eosinophilic granulomatous stomatitis with hyphal organisms surrounded by eosinophilic sleeves (Splendore-Hoeppli material) suggestive of an entomophthoramycosis. The fungus was cultured and identified with features consistent with Conidiobolus sp. Treatment with itraconazole at 10 mg kg-1 twice daily for 61 days resulted in clinical

Rhinofacial entomophthoramycosis; a case series and review of the literature.

Rhinofacial entomophthoramycosis is an uncommon chronic mycotic disease caused by exposure to the organism Conidiobolus coronatus. The authors report a case series of 5 patients with rhinofacial entomophthoramycosis and review the literature. All patients had typical involvement of the rhinofacial area with formation of subcutaneous lesions causing a chronic granulomatous inflammatory response with tissue eosinophilia and Splendore-Hoeppli reaction. Diagnoses were made based on histopathologic examination in all cases and fungi were isolated and identified in one case. The clinicopathologic fe

Pythiosis, lagenidiosis, and zygomycosis in small animals.

Pythiosis, lagenidiosis, and zygomycosis affect animals living in temperate, tropical, and subtropical climates, and these diseases are often fatal. Although Pythium insidiosum, Conidiobolus species, and Basidiobolus species have been recognized as pathogens for several years, members of the genus Lagenidium have been identified as a cause of oomycosis in dogs only recently. Pythiosis, lagenidiosis, and zygomycosis share similar clinical and histologic characteristics, making them difficult to distinguish from one another; however, distinguishing between these pathogens is important because of

[New approaches to phycomycoses (apropos of 2 cases of rhino-entomophthoromycosis)].

It is an uncommon affection (only 100 cases reported), observed primarily in African peri-equatorial zone. The rhinoentomophtoromycoses are caused by a phycomycetous fungus, class of zygomycetes: Conidiobolus coronatus. They are subcutaneomucus mycoses with centro-facial localizations. During the past ten years, three points have been put into light. 1. A true therapeutic revolution thanks to imidazoles. 2. A better knowledge of this disease in which caricatural forms are far form being the most numerous. 3. A socio-cultural African approach better understood, as such a disease is still consid

Clinical, Laboratory and Anatomopathological Findings of an Outbreak of Conidiobolomycosis in Sheep in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.

Diseases of the nasal cavity have a diverse etiology and cause severe disorders in animals. Conidiobolomycosis is a type of zygomycosis caused by the fungus Conidiobolus spp., occurring more frequently in sheep. The objective of this study is to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics, as well as microbiological and histopathological findings, of an outbreak of conidiobolomycosis in sheep. A total of 12 animals out of a herd of 70 were affected, representing a morbidity of 17.1%; mortality and lethality were 11.4% (8/70) and 66.6% (8/12), respectively, of which 4 sheep died s

Rhinoentomophthoromycosis.

A sixty year old patient presented with a slowly progressive swelling of the nose, of one year duration, suggesting a clinical diagnosis of subcutaneous zygomycosis. On investigation, the tissue fungal culture grew Conidiobolus coronatus, confirming the diagnosis as rhinoentomophthoromycosis. He was treated with a combination of oral fluconazole and oral potassium iodide for a total period of 5 months. His symptoms subsided completely. Serial CT scanning of paranasal sinuses showed the gradual resolution of the swelling, in response to the treatment. Early detection of the disease and combinat

Some deep mycoses diagnosed by histopathology in South Eastern Nigeria.

Twenty-three cases of deep mycoses were histologically diagnosed in 6500 surgical biopsy specimens examined during a three year period (1985-1988) in the Department of Pathology, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria. These included 12 cases of African histoplasmosis, four of mycetoma, four of actinomycetoma, two of paranasal aspergilloma, and one of zygomycosis due to Conidiobolus coronatus (rhinoentomophthoromycosis). Involvement of tooth gum and colon in one case each of African histoplasmosis, and of maxillary sinus in two cases of paranasal aspergilloma were unusual cl

[2 new cases of rhinoentomophthoromycosis diagnosed in the Central African Republic (review of the literature)].

After a historical account and review of the published literature on rhinoentomophthoromycosis, we report two recently recognized cases in Central African Republic. The first case was a 32 year-old "peuhl" woman with typical facial deformation that gave her a "hippopotamus-woman" aspect. The second case was a 53 year-old man with lesions that were less typical and limited to one half of the face only. In both cases, hypodermic nodules were palpable and it is likely that inoculation occurred by scratching of a skin lesion. The woman originates from a savanna region whereas the second patient is

A clinical study was conducted to test the efficacy of fluconazole in the treatment of tropical deep mycoses. Two out of four patients with zygomycosis due to Conidiobolus coronatus who were treated with the drug were completely cured; the other two patients exhibited considerable improvement but could not be followed up. Two patients with eumycetoma, one due to an Acremonium sp. and one due to Pseudallescheria boydii, were treated successfully, whereas another patient with a eumycetoma caused by an unidentified fungus could not be followed up. A complete cure was achieved with one patient wit
