[Roles of cytokines in the development of severe allergic conjunctival diseases: analyses using animal models].

Conjunctival papillary formation and corneal damage, which are seen in severe types of allergic conjunctival diseases, are mediated by eosinophils. Eosinophils themselves are not able to recognize a specific antigen (Ag) and thus, Ag-specific T cells are thought to be important for eosinophilic infiltration into the conjunctiva. Cytokines, which are produced by Ag-specific T cells followed by Ag recognition, are considered to be involved in eosinophilic infiltration. Therefore, we investigated the involvement of cytokines, which are produced by immunocompetent cells and conjunctival cells, in

Long-term outcomes of 0.1% tacrolimus eye drops in eyes with severe allergic conjunctival diseases.

BACKGROUND: Because atopic dermatitis does not heal completely, associated severe atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) often require long-term treatment. This study aims to evaluate the long-term outcomes of using 0.1% tacrolimus eye drops to treat these severe allergic conjunctival diseases. METHODS: Two-hundred-and-seventy eyes of 135 patients diagnosed with AKC or VKC from April 2004 to April 2014 were screened retrospectively. Patient demographics and objective signs were extracted from the electronic medical records. The severity of 10 objective signs,

Imaging assessment of conjunctival goblet cells in dry eye disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a widespread, multifactorial, and chronic disorder of the ocular surface with disruption of tear film homeostasis as its core trait. Conjunctival goblet cells (CGCs) are specialised secretory cells found in the conjunctival epithelium that participate in tear film formation by secreting mucin. Changes in both the structure and function of CGCs are hallmarks of DED, and imaging assessment of CGCs is important for the diagnosis, classification, and severity evaluation of DED. Existing imaging methods include conjunctival biopsy, conjunctival impression cytology and in vi

Human bulbar conjunctival hemodynamics in hemoglobin SS and SC disease.

The known biophysical variations of hemoglobin (Hb) S and Hb C may result in hemodynamic differences between subjects with SS and SC disease. The purpose of this study was to measure and compare conjunctival hemodynamics between subjects with Hb SS and SC hemoglobinopathies. Image sequences of the conjunctival microcirculation were acquired in 9 healthy control subjects (Hb AA), 24 subjects with SC disease, and 18 subjects with SS disease, using a prototype imaging system. Diameter (D) and blood velocity (V) measurements were obtained in multiple venules of each subject. Data were categorized

Regression of conjunctival tumor during dietary treatment of celiac disease.

A 3-year-old girl presented with a hemorrhagic conjunctival lesion in the right eye. The medical history revealed premature cessation of breast feeding, intolerance to the ingestion of baby foods, anorexia, and abdominal distention. Prior to her referral, endoscopic small intestinal biopsy had been carried out under general anesthesia with a possible diagnosis of Celiac Disease (CD). Her parents did not want their child to undergo general anesthesia for the second time for the excisional biopsy. We decided to follow the patient until all systemic investigations were concluded. In evaluation, t

Changes in conjunctival clusterin expression in severe ocular surface disease.

PURPOSE: Clusterin is a unique gene transcript in the human ocular surface epithelia and is synthesized by and localized in mucosal epithelia in general. It is not present, however, in keratinized epithelia, such as epidermis. In severe ocular surface disease, pathologic keratinization (squamous metaplasia) of the ordinarily nonkeratinized corneal and conjunctival mucosal epithelia results in severe visual loss. In the current study, the expression of clusterin was examined in conjunctivalized corneas with severe ocular surface disease. METHODS: We examined conjunctiva covering cornea in eigh

Conjunctival Infiltration in a Child as a Rare Manifestation of IgG4-Related Disease.

PURPOSE: Ocular manifestations of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease are common in children although remain ill-defined because of the disease's rarity. We describe a pediatric case of IgG4-related orbital disease (IgG4-ROD) who presented with persistent conjunctival infiltration before developing lacrimal gland enlargement 3 years later. METHODS: This was a case report. RESULTS: An 8-year-old girl developed forniceal salmon-patch-like conjunctival lesions in her left eye that were refractory to topical corticosteroids. Conjunctival flap surgery in the management of ocular surface disease (Review).

Literature regarding conjunctival flap surgery was reviewed to describe and discuss the rationale for this type of procedure. The conjunctival flap is an acknowledged surgery for the treatment of various corneal diseases with a chronically compromised ocular surface, such as severe dry eye, neurotrophic or neuroparalytic disease, or bullous keratopathy. The purpose of this surgery is to restore the integrity of the corneal surface and thus to prevent gradual corneal ulceration and secondary infection, as well as to ameliorate pain, reduce the need for frequent medications, improve cosmetic app

The role of conjunctival epithelial cells in chronic ocular allergic disease.

Recent evidence suggests that mucosal epithelial cells are capable of actively participating in immune reactions via expression of surface antigens, such as adhesion molecules, and synthesis of cytokines. This appears to be important in the pathophysiology of non-ocular allergic disorders. The objectives of the experiments were to compare the expression of HLA-DR, ICAM-I and pro-allergic cytokines in conjunctival epithelial cells in the different chronic ocular allergic disorders with each other and with normal subjects. Conjunctiva from normal patients (n=10) and patients with vernal keratoco

Histamine release test and measurement of antigen-specific IgE antibody in the diagnosis of allergic conjunctival diseases.

Although systemic allergic laboratory tests for the quantification of allergen-specific serum IgE antibody have been widely used, in these tests a high titer of serum specific IgE does not necessarily indicate evidence of allergy. We evaluated the diagnostic value of the glass microfiber-based histamine release test (HRT) using small amounts of whole blood, in 36 cases of allergic conjunctival diseases: 17 cases of allergic conjunctivitis and 19 of atopic keratoconjunctivitis. The patients were evaluated by HRT, capsulated hydrolic carrier polymer (CAP)-RAST, and conjunctival provocation test
