We have performed serial trans-fontanelle sonography on 69 newborns with perinatal asphyxia. Ten neonates presented high ultrasonic density in the thalamus and the basal ganglia. These images were preceded, in eight of them, by diffuse echoes for all of the CNS, corresponding to cerebral edema. The most significant clinical findings were convulsions and important depression of conscience level and muscular tone. Eight of ten newborns presented major abnormalities in the electroencephalogram (severe depression of background). Since its coexistence with other parenchymal lesions and poor neurolo

The approach of the concept of psychogenesis and its significances for the explanation of certain psychic disorders allows a clinical estimation of the positive and differential diagnosis of acute psychogenic states. The variety and polymorphism of the psychogenies, clinically expressed in variable degrees of conscience disorders as well as their frequency in the practice of general medicine underline the importance of the clinical examination, case history and usual paraclinical investigations. The estimation of symptomatology, motivation and the evolution of psychogenic states allows the avo

Catholic healthcare institutions worldwide are under increasing pressure to participate in euthanasia-often through forced implementation rather than chosen partnership, creating ethical challenges in balancing institutional conscience and theological integrity with their obligations to serve the broader public. This paper develops an interdisciplinary spatial ethics framework of healthcare space grounded in epistemology, environmental psychology, and Catholic moral theology; it examines three spatial dimensions-operational, missional, and moral-and Catholic social teaching principles of subsi

A six years old boy was sent to our service due to a loss of conscience spell. He had no preceding history E.K.G. showed a complete A-V block. Laboratory findings were within normal limits. Cardiac catheterism was performed and it ruled out any antomic abnormality, making evident a good contraction ability. To decide pacemaker implantation we evaluted: 1. That cardiac frequency was not increased by exercise neither by action of pharmacologyc agents (atropine, insoproterenol).-2. The existence of wide and bizarre QRS ocmplex.-3. And dizziness spels. In this investigation 82 patients with various head traumas are examined with respect to time and duration of retrograde, congrade and anterograde amnesia, especially the dependence of their duration on the severity of trauma. The more severe the trauma, the longer the duration of all forms of amnesia, the retrograde being the shorter whether there is a loss of conscience (congrade amnesia) or not. A tendency of amnesias to shrink could only be examined following mild brain trauma and occurred seldom. Our findings suggest that short amnesias have less tendency to shrink than long ones. The dis

The hallmark presentation of combat trauma-nightmares, waking hallucinations, intrusive traumatic memories, and extreme affective reactions to environmental triggers-may best be conceptualized as part of an adaptive mechanism intended to protect the individual against a repetition of trauma. Combat veterans continuously must cope with the extreme affects that combat induced. Fear, rage, guilt, and grief predominate. Their mental and emotional life is complicated by a conscience split between war zone and civilian morality and by the special group dynamics of combat. Optimal clinical understand

Botulism is a rare but severe disease. Whereas until 1980, only one case of botulism had been reported in our department, in 1999, a real botulism epidemic took place in Morocco. To our knowledge, it's the first outbreak of that kind in Morocco. We report here an epidemiologic and descriptive study of 11 patients suffering from botulism, admitted at the Infectious Diseases department and in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of Ibn Rochd University Hospital, from August, the 10th to October, the 1st, 1999. Clinical diagnosis of botulism was made, at the admission, on ocular signs (diplopia, ptosi

Late 19th century novels provide graphic descriptions of working and living conditions and their impact on population health, in particular the detrimental effects of hunger, poor housing, environmental conditions, hazardous work and poor pay, smoking and alcohol and crime, but also the transformative possibilities of social and political action. The popularity of these novels helped raise the collective conscience of citizens and illuminated the direction for 20th century welfare reforms. Yet many of these problems remain and the pathways to and from poverty are still recognisable today. Alth

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of humanity's oldest and deadliest infectious diseases, yet its history is not written solely in medical texts and epidemiological tables. An extraordinary parallel narrative exists in philately-through tuberculosis seals and Christmas seals-those documents global social conscience, public health advocacy, and collective responsibility. This article traces the evolution of TB seals from their inception in early twentieth-century Europe to their widespread global adoption and eventual indigenization in India. Emphasis is placed on the sequential development of desi

The current study draws on the transactional theory of stress to propose that employees cope with hostile work environments by engaging in emotion-based coping in the forms of organization-directed deviance and psychological withdrawal. Specifically, we propose that supervisors' hostile organizational climate perceptions act as distal environmental stressors that are partially transmitted through supervisors' abusive actions and that conscientiousness moderates the proposed effects. First, we hypothesize that supervisor conscientiousness has a buffering effect by decreasing the likelihood of a

The most deeply transformative concept for the growth of 21st Century psychiatry is the constellation of the chaotic dynamics of the brain. Brains are no longer seen as rational systems that are plagued with emotional disorders reflecting primitives inherited from our animal ancestors. Brains are dynamical systems that continually create patterns by acting intentionally into the environment and shaping themselves in accord with the sensory consequences of their intended actions. Emotions are now seen not as reversions to animal behaviors but as the sources of force and energy that brains requi

The Role of the Medical Profession in Euthanasia, Particularly in the Prescription of Sodium Pentobarbital Abstract. The delivery of sodium pentobarbital as part of assisted suicide requires a doctor's prescription. This prescription must meet the legal and professional requirements as well as the corresponding ethical guidelines. Current legal practice restrictively permits suicide assistance in this form, especially in the case of patients who are willing to die and whose death is foreseeable. The new guidelines of the SAMS (2018) extend the possibility to patients who suffer intolerably due

For the induction of anesthesia in neurosurgical patients, the choice between thiopental and midazolam cannot be done on the basis of their respective cardiovascular, respiratory or cerebral effects, since they are similar. Among the advantages of midazolam are the absence of histamine release and excitatory effects. On the contrary the onset and the duration of action as well as the intensity of sedation are less predictable with midazolam when compared to thiopental. Therefore thiopental remains the first drug of choice in this clinical setting. For preoperative sedation in neurosurgical pat

BACKGROUND: Physicians' refusal to perform medical procedures that they deem contrary to their conscience may threaten basic human rights and public health. This study aims to investigate the thoughts and attitudes of future physicians on conscientious objection (CO) and thus contribute to the discussions from a country more heavily influenced by Eastern values.
METHODS: A cross-sectional multi-center study was conducted among medical students country-wide, where 2,188 medical students participated via an online survey. The methodology was in accordance with the CHERRIES.

Adolf Wallenberg became the "anatomical conscience" to at least one famed neurologist, and was known worldwide by top neurologists. His comprehensive clinical-pathological descriptions of what became known as Wallenberg Syndrome had a large impact on neurology and launched his career. He did not let a skull base injury from an accident, or his service in the German army in World War I, impede his progress. Despite his accomplishments, because he was Jewish he was stripped of his research laboratory and forced to stop working when the Nazis took over his native Danzig. He barely escaped just be

Intermittent alcohol disorders are defined by the paroxystic aspect of alcohol consumption followed by periods of time without alcohol ingestion. The most typical form of intermittent alcoholism is dispomania. During the acute episode of dipsomania, the patient presents an extreme craving for alcohol and a complete loss of control. The alcohol consumption usually leads to severe overdoses and coma. The cases of pure dipsomania are relatively rare in daily practice. Most often, intermittent forms of alcohol abuse or dependence are observed in patients who present, between the acute ingestions o

The occasion of Academic Medicine's centennial anniversary (2026) provides the opportunity to look back to its history and forward to its future. The journal was founded in the aftermath of the revolution in American medical education of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The events of that era are reviewed to correct the common misperception that little had happened in American medical education before the Flexner report of 1910. The work of Academic Medicine over 100 years is described, with an emphasis on how its focus expanded from the internal mechanics of medical education to includ

The legal recognition of veganism highlights the evolving landscape of dietary choices and their status under human rights law. This paper examines the legal status of vegan diets under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), focusing on public institutions such as prisons and hospitals. By analyzing the first relevant cases before the European Court of Human Rights, it explores the protection of vegan diets under Articles 9 (freedom of thought, conscience, and religion) and 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the ECHR. The paper also considers whether access to a vegan diet relates
