[Accessibility of scenic spots and its influencing mechanism in the Hexi Corridor, northwest of Gansu Pro-vince, China].

The Hexi Corridor is located in an arid and ecologically fragile region. Tourism development in this area benefits from Silk Road cultural resources and major transportation corridors, but is simultaneously constrained by limited ecological carrying capacity and high resource sensitivity. Taking scenic spots above 4A-level in the Hexi Corridor as the study objects, based on an improved spatio-temporal utility approach, we constructed an integrated accessibility index from three dimensions, namely attractiveness, road network time, and travel time. By integrating random forest-SHAP analysis wit

Green dialysis: environmentally sustainable care, growth, and innovation: conclusions from a Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Controversies Conference.

Hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, and peritoneal dialysis are among the most resource-intensive medical therapies, owing to their high energy and water consumption, heavy reliance on disposable materials, and frequent, recurring delivery. Although "green dialysis" initiatives have been adopted in some regions, broader implementation is needed, together with the development of new technologies and care models to further mitigate the environmental impact of dialysis. In April 2025, Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) held the Controversies Conference on Green Dialysis: Environmental

Health evaluation and protection management of ancient trees in historic city.

This study analyzes the distribution and health status of unprotected ancient trees in Gyeongju, South Korea. Based on a comprehensive literature review and field database, evaluation indicators were established for growth parameters (tree height, diameter at breast height(DBH), crown width, soil pH, soil compaction, and estimated chronological age) and health indicators (crown architecture, crown structure, crown vigor, and incidence of pests and diseases). The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) ranked the relative importance of health indicators as: presence of pests and diseases > crown archi

Restoration Contexts and Trends in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: Evidence from Science and Practice.

Large-scale restoration in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is expected to recover biodiversity, carbon stocks, and other ecosystem functions while also supporting rural livelihoods. Yet the evidence supporting these claimed outcomes remains uneven, especially when distinguishing reported outcomes from causal evidence based on baselines, controls, counterfactuals, or long-term monitoring. We assessed peer-reviewed studies and a contextual set of documented initiatives to synthesize reported environmental, social, and economic findings together with governance and financing conditions associated w

On the Use of the Jackknife to Compare RXY Statistics in Conservation Genomics Research.

Many useful quantities in conservation genomics are point estimates that summarise genetic variation at the population or species level. This presents a challenge to the application of null hypothesis testing frameworks, which require some measure of uncertainty to test the authenticity of measured group differences. The jackknife is a convenient statistical resampling tool which sees regular use to this end: producing confidence intervals for point estimates. Unfortunately, the slightly obscure nature of the jackknife coupled with its superficial resemblance to the bootstrap has led to its mi

Effects of parachute science on local research capacity.

Strengthening research capacity is essential to address the global biodiversity crisis. Yet, parachute science often undermines this goal, and its prevalence, costs, and benefits are unclear. We analyzed 13,502 publications on primate research that we extracted from Scopus (1960-2022) to evaluate the effects of parachute science on local research capacity across primate-range countries. We categorized these publications as local (LRP), collaborative (CRP), or parachute science (PSRP) research publications and categorized countries where the research took place as low- to middle-income countrie

The effects of actors' interests and power on compliance with institutional arrangements: Mixed-methods insights from Cameroon's forest landscape restoration governance.

Actors' roles in forest landscape restoration (FLR) have gained scientific traction, although there is a lack of clarity on the link between actors' interests, power, and institutions in sub-Saharan Africa. We used actor-centred power and endogenous-cum-exogenous institutional analytical lenses to determine the effects of actors' interests and power elements on institutional compliance in rural Cameroon's FLR. We used interviews, focus group discussions, household surveys, and non-participant observations to obtain data for this study. The logistic regression and content analyses revealed that

Corporate sustainability practices: An interplay of uncertainty, geopolitical risk and competition.

The present study analyses the interplay between uncertainty and sustainability investment in the line of PMC (product market competition), and its impact on the firms' sustainable practices. Based on a sample of 2533 listed companies from 2011 to 2023, it was observed that uncertainty positively influences sustainable investment, and the PMC plays a moderating role in the case of G-20 countries. Furthermore, the research indicates that sustainable investment promotes long-term investment in G-20 countries during the study period and lessens the unfavorable outcome of uncertainty on a firm's v

Challenges and opportunities for integrating social science in a conservation nongovernmental organization.

Although the importance of social science to conservation practice and policy is well accepted, social scientists remain in the minority in conservation nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). We explored how social science has started to inform the work of WWT, an NGO dedicated to the restoration of wetlands for people and nature. Through reflections on our experiences working in WWT's social dimensions unit and interviews with colleagues from different backgrounds and roles, we critically reflected on the integration of social science in wetland conservation science, advocacy, and practice. So

An interdisciplinary approach to improving conservation outcomes for parasites.

Parasites represent a significant proportion of Earth's biodiversity and play important roles in the ecology and biology of ecosystems and hosts, making them an important target for conservation. Despite increasing calls to prioritize protection for parasites in the academic literature, they remain undervalued and underrepresented in global biodiversity conservation efforts, not least due to the perception that the interests of parasite and host conservation are opposing and the common misconception that parasites are a threat, rather than a benefit, to conservation. We considered whether taki

Global drivers of mangrove loss in protected areas.

Despite increasing efforts and investment in mangrove conservation, mangrove cover continues to decline globally. The extent to which protected area (PA) management effectively prevents mangrove loss globally across differing management objectives and governance types is not well understood. We combined remote sensing data with PA information to identify the extent and the drivers of mangrove loss across PAs with distinct governance types and protection levels based on categories developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Mangrove loss due to storms and erosion was

Catch yield and selectivity of a modified scallop dredge to reduce seabed impact.

Global scallop fisheries are economically important but are associated with environmental impacts to seabed communities resulting from the direct physical contact of the fishing gear with the seabed. Gear modifications attempting to reduce this contact must be economically feasible such that the catch numbers for the target species is maintained or increased. This study investigated the outcome of reducing seabed contact on retained catch of scallops and bycatch by the addition of skids to the bottom of the collecting bag of scallop dredges. We used a paired control experimental design to inve

Using explainable machine learning methods to evaluate vulnerability and restoration potential of ecosystem state transitions.

Ecosystem state transitions can be ecologically devastating or be a restoration success. State transitions are common within aquatic systems worldwide, especially considering human-mediated changes to land use and water use. We created a transferable conceptual framework to enable multiscale assessments of state resilience and early warnings of state transitions that can inform strategic restorations and avoid ecosystem collapse. The conceptual framework integrated machine learning predictions with ecosystem state concepts (e.g., state classification, gradients of vulnerability, and recovery p

Assessment of rainwater harvesting potential from rooftops in Jordan's Twelve Governorates.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting (RRWH) offers a potential solution to Jordan's pressing water scarcity problems. Yet, its feasibility and benefits necessitate a thorough assessment, particularly as existing studies on the subject are outdated and often constrained by limited scope or small data sets. To this end, our study assessed the potential of RRWH in Jordan's 12 governorates, utilizing historical rainfall data from 1987 to 2018 and official statistics on population and rooftop areas. The analyses used the Ripple Method and Water Balance Model to determine potential harvestable water volumes

Changes of Tamarix austromongolica forests with embankment dams along the Laizhou bay.

BACKGROUND: Embankment dams were built south of the Laizhou bay in China for controlling storm surge disasters, but they are not enough to replace coastal forests in protecting the land. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of embankment dams on natural forests dominated by Tamarix austromongolica and test whether the dam-shrub system is a preferable updated defense. METHODS: Coastal forests on two typical flats, one before and one behind embankment dams, were investigated using quadrats and lines. Land bareness, vegetation composition and species co-occurrence were assessed; struc

Assessment of suitable habitat of mangrove species for prioritizing restoration in coastal ecosystem of Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, India.

Mangrove forests being the abode of diverse fauna and flora are vital for healthy coastal ecosystems. These forests act as a carbon sequester and protection shield against floods, storms, and cyclones. The mangroves of the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve (SBR), being one of the most dynamic and productive ecosystems in the world are in constant degradation. Hence, habitat suitability assessment of mangrove species is of paramount significance for its restoration and ecological benefits. The study aims to assess and prioritize restoration targets for 18 true mangrove species using 10 machine-learni

Quantifying anthropogenic threats affecting Marine Protected Areas in developing countries.

Conservation's capacity to deal with anthropogenic environmental threats within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) varies enormously, especially in developing countries that are often immersed in weak enforcement, ineffective management and shortages of resources. A deeper understanding of the causes of these threats is fundamental for identifying effective management solutions. Here, we investigate the presumptive drivers of environmental threats across 40 Brazilian MPAs. We categorized and quantified environmental threats from two independent sources: i) the results of systematic social surveys c

Innovative sanitation approaches could address multiple development challenges.

Globally, more than 60% of the human population live without safely managed sanitation services or even lack access to basic sanitation facilities. In addition, most of the wastewater produced in the world is discharged without proper treatment. Integrated approaches are needed to address these issues and curb the resulting adverse impacts on public health and the environment, and associated societal economic losses. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides an important framework towards more sustainable sanitation development, in terms of both safe sanitation access

Increasing urban water self-sufficiency: new era, new challenges.

Urban water supplies are traditionally based on limited freshwater resources located outside the cities. However, a range of concepts and techniques to exploit alternative water resources has gained ground as water demands begin to exceed the freshwater available to cities. Based on 113 cases and 15 in-depth case studies, solutions used to increase water self-sufficiency in urban areas are analyzed. The main drivers for increased self-sufficiency were identified to be direct and indirect lack of water, constrained infrastructure, high quality water demands and commercial and institutional pres
