Continuous monitoring of physiological data using the patient vital status fusion score in septic critical care patients.

Accurate and standardized methods for assessing the vital status of patients are crucial for patient care and scientific research. This study introduces the Patient Vital Status (PVS), which quantifies and contextualizes a patient's physical status based on continuous variables such as vital signs and deviations from age-dependent normative values. The vital signs, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, mean arterial blood pressure, and temperature were selected as input to the PVS pipeline. The method was applied to 70 pediatric patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), and its eff

Clinical indicators for recommending continued care to patients with neck pain in chiropractic practice: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chiropractors' clinical indicators for recommending preventive continued care to patients with low back pain include previous pain episodes, a history of long pain duration and improvement after initial treatment. Our objectives were, in a cohort of patients with neck pain, to examine whether these clinical indicators were associated with being recommended continued care beyond 4 weeks, and if so whether this recommendation was dependent of chiropractor characteristics, as well as if the number of clinical indicators influenced this recommendation. METHODS: In this multi-center ob

Patients with substance use disorders receiving continued care in skilled nursing facilities following hospitalization.

Background: As hospitals in the US face pressures to reduce lengths of stay, healthcare systems are increasingly utilizing skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) to continue treating patients stable enough to leave the hospital, but not to return home. Substance use disorder (SUD) can complicate care of patients transferred to SNFs. The objective of this paper is to understand SNF experiences for this population of patients with comorbid SUD transferred to SNFs and examine care experiences in these facilities. Methods: This secondary mixed-methods analysis focuses on SNF experiences from a clinical

Contribution of Continuous Virtual Monitoring to Hospital Safety, Quality, and Value of Care for COVID-19 Patients.

Introduction: The rapid onset of the COVID-19 pandemic increased hospital admissions and shortages for personal protective equipment (PPE) used to slow the spread of infections. In addition, nurses treating COVID-19 patients have time-consuming guidelines to properly don and doff PPE to prevent the spread. Methods: To address these issues, the Medical University of South Carolina repurposed continuous virtual monitoring (CVM) systems to reduce the need for staff to enter patient rooms. The objective of this study was to identify the economic implications associated with using the CVM program f

Patients' Perceived Continuity of Care and Adherence to Oral Anticancer Therapy: a Prospective Cohort Mediation Study.

BackgroundOral anticancer therapy (OACT) poses adherence-related challenges to patients while generating a setting in which both primary care physicians (PCPs) and oncologists are involved in the active treatment of cancer. Continuity of care (COC) was shown to be associated with medication adherence. While maintaining COC is a central role of the PCP, how this affects continuity with oncologists, and jointly affects OACT adherence, is yet unknown.ObjectivesTo explore how aspects of COC act together to promote OACT adherence. Specifically, to examine whether better personal continuity with the

[Care continuity for patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) during transition from childhood to adulthood].

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant multisystem neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by the development of multiple hamartomas distributed throughout the body, skin, brain, eyes, heart, kidney and lung. The affected genes are TSC1 and TSC2, encoding hamartin and tuberin respectively. The hamartin-tuberin complex inhibits the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway, which controls cell growth and proliferation. The most common neurological manifestations of TSC are epilepsy, mental retardation, and autistic behavior. Epilespsy usually occurs during childhood and they need a

Continuous Glucose Monitoring for Patients with COVID-19 Pneumonia: Initial Experience at a Tertiary Care Center.

OBJECTIVE: Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and hyperglycemia require frequent glucose monitoring, usually performed with glucometers. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are common in the outpatient setting but not yet approved for hospital use. We evaluated CGM accuracy, safety for insulin dosing, and CGM clinical reliability in 20 adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and hyperglycemia. METHODS: Study patients were fitted with a remotely monitored CGM. CGM values were evaluated against glucometer readings. The CGM sensor calibration was performed if necessary. CGM values were used to

Continuous Versus Intermittent Nutrition in Pediatric Intensive Care Patients: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent fasting is a time-restricted feeding strategy with proven health benefits, which is based on multiple metabolic and endocrine changes, in several patient populations and healthy participants. In the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), artificial feeding is usually administered 24 hours a day, although solid evidence supporting this practice is lacking. This discards the potential benefits of fasting in this population. We hypothesize that intermittent nutrition with a focus on an overnight feeding interruption (intermittent fasting), as compared with 24-hour continuo

Impact of continuity of care on risk for major osteoporotic fracture in patients with new onset rheumatoid arthritis.

There is a clear relationship between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and major osteoporotic fracture (MOF), although there is limited evidence on the effect of continuity of care (COC) on MOF in these patients. We investigated the association between COC and risk of MOF, including fractures of the lumbar spine and pelvis, forearm, and hip, among newly diagnosed RA patients aged ≥ 60 years. A total of 8715 incident RA patients from 2004 to 2010 were included from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort database. Participants were categorized into a good and bad COC group according
