Telehealth contraceptive care in 2018: A quality improvement study of barriers to access and patient satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this project was to facilitate access to contraception at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus by offering telehealth as an alternative option to an in-person contraception visit. The secondary aim was to assess patient feedback regarding telehealth contraception encounters and generate descriptive statistics of the 366 unique telehealth patients. STUDY DESIGN: We implemented this quality improvement project from August 20, 2018, through December 31, 2018, at the University Health Services (UHS) Women's Health Clinic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Obstetric-gynecology resident education regarding barrier and over-the-counter contraceptives: a national study.

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to assess obstetrics-gynecology resident knowledge about barrier and over-the-counter (OTC) contraceptives and identify strengths and weaknesses in resident education. METHODS: We developed a survey for distribution among 50 randomly selected U.S. obstetrics-gynecology residency programs. RESULTS: Of 202 respondents, only 57% and 36% of residents reported adequate knowledge to counsel patients regarding latex vs. nonlatex condom use, respectively. Ninety-six percent knew spermicides were nonprotective against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); however,

Propensity of tampons and barrier contraceptives to amplify Staphylococcus aureusToxic shock syndrome toxin-I.

OBJECTIVE: Although the incidence of reported cases of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) has declined in recent years, the disease continues to occur in menstruating women using the newer, less-absorbent tampons or barrier contraceptives. Extant tampons and other vaginal devices were tested for the ability to induce TSS toxin-1 (TSST-1) by a TSS strain of Staphylococcus aureus MN8, a known high-toxin producer. Tested for the first time were 20 varieties of tampons, including 2 all-cotton brands newly introduced in the United States, a polyurethane contraceptive sponge, a latex diaphragm, and a polyme

Nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome associated with barrier contraceptives: report of a case-control study.

Use of barrier contraceptives has been hypothesized to be a risk factor for nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome (TSS). This association was evaluated in a case-control study of nonmenstrual TSS; cases were identified through an active surveillance system for TSS during 1986 and 1987. Potential risk factors for nonmenstrual TSS were compared for 28 patients and 100 age-matched controls. Use of barrier contraceptives was associated with a significantly increased risk of nonmenstrual TSS, with matched odds ratios of 10.5 and 11.7 for contraceptive sponge and diaphragm use, respectively. Use of nonb

Hormonal and barrier contraception and risk of upper genital tract disease in the PID Evaluation and Clinical Health (PEACH) study.

OBJECTIVE: Among women diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease, we examined the associations between hormonal or barrier methods of contraception and upper genital tract infection or inflammation. METHODS: Participants were 563 patients from a treatment trial for pelvic inflammatory disease. All had pelvic pain; pelvic organ tenderness; and leukorrhea, mucopurulent cervicitis, or untreated cervicitis. Contraceptive use within the prior 4 weeks was compared among women with baseline upper genital tract gonorrhea or chlamydia, women with endometritis without upper genital tract gonorrhea or

Prospective study of barrier contraception for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases: study design and general characteristics of the study group.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The AIDS epidemic has brought barrier contraceptives to the forefront of public health research. A comprehensive evaluation of the efficacy of barrier contraceptive use in preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including AIDS, is necessary to inform both potential users and public health policy makers. This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of condoms and vaginal spermicide products, used alone or in combination, in preventing gonorrhea and chlamydia among women attending an STD clinic. GOAL OF THIS STUDY: To describe the general characteristic

A Theory of Planned Behaviour Analysis of Barriers and Facilitators of Immediate Postpartum Contraception Uptake in Southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Closely spaced pregnancies increase the risks of maternal and perinatal morbidity. Initiation of contraception in the immediate postpartum period offers a critical opportunity to address this unmet need during a window when women are in contact with health services. We explored barriers and facilitators of immediate postpartum contraceptive uptake at a tertiary hospital in southwestern Uganda, using the Theory of Planned Behavior. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study between August and December 2025 at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. Using purposive sampling,

Barriers and Enablers Influencing Women's Adoption and Continuation of Vaginally Inserted Contraceptive Methods: A Literature Review.

Most vaginally inserted methods have limited availability and use despite offering characteristics that align with many women's stated preferences (e.g., nonhormonal and/or on demand). The objective of this review was to identify enablers and barriers to women's adoption and continuation of vaginally inserted contraceptive methods in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We searched three databases (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) and 18 websites using keywords related to five vaginally inserted contraceptive methods (diaphragm, vaginal ring, female condom, copper intrauterine device [

Uptake of permanent contraception among women in sub-Saharan Africa: a literature review of barriers and facilitators.

OBJECTIVE: Uptake of permanent contraception among women remains low in sub-Saharan Africa compared to other regions. We aimed to synthesize available evidence on barriers to, and facilitators of permanent contraception with regards to tubal ligation among women in sub-Saharan Africa. STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed literature on tubal ligation among African women published between January 1, 2000 and October 30, 2017. We searched PubMed, Global health, EMBASE, Web of science, and Google scholar for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies which reported on barriers and/or facilitators

Barriers to and enablers of contraceptive use among adolescent females and their interest in an emergency department based intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Over 15 million adolescents, many at high risk for pregnancy, use emergency departments (EDs) in the United States annually, but little is known regarding reasons for failure to use contraceptives in this population. The purpose of this study was to identify the barriers to and enablers of contraceptive use among adolescent females using the ED and determine their interest in an ED-based pregnancy prevention intervention. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted semistructured, open-ended interviews with females in an urban ED. Eligible females were 14-19 years old, sexually active, presenting f

'As many options as there are, there are just not enough for me': contraceptive use and barriers to access among Australian women.

OBJECTIVE: A comprehensive life course perspective of women's experiences in obtaining and using contraception in Australia is lacking. This paper explores free-text comments about contraception provided by women born between 1973 and 1978 who participated in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH). METHODS: The ALSWH is a national population-based cohort study involving over 40,000 women from three age groups, who are surveyed every three years. An initial search identified 1600 comments from 690 women across five surveys from 1996 (when they were aged 18-23 years) to 200

Lea's Shield: a study of the safety and efficacy of a new vaginal barrier contraceptive used with and without spermicide.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety, efficacy and acceptability of Lea's Shield, a new vaginal contraceptive barrier device, when used with either spermicidal or non-spermicidal lubricant. One-hundred-eighty-five (185) women enrolled at six centers. Half were randomized to use the device with spermicide and half with a non-spermicidal lubricant. To be eligible, volunteers had to be 18-40 years old (inclusive), in good health with regular menses, sexually active in an ongoing relationship and at risk for pregnancy, and willing to use Lea's Shield as their sole means of contrace

Why Pakistani Women Do Not Use Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices: A Systematic Review of Barriers and Misconceptions.

This review explores barriers limiting the adoption of Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCDs) in Pakistan, focusing exclusively on local articles. As Pakistan's high population calls for widespread contraception, we aim to pinpoint obstacles hindering IUCD utilization, irrespective of parity. We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Google Scholar, PakMedinet, and Wiley Online Library for English-language primary studies published between 2000 and 2022, reporting on IUCD utilization in Pakistan. Our analysis reveals multiple barriers impeding IUCD use in Pakistan. These encompass pat

Distance Matters: Geographic barriers to long acting reversible and permanent contraception for homeless women Veterans.

Women Veterans who experience homelessness are at high risk of unintended pregnancy and adverse outcomes. Contraception could mitigate risks, yet access barriers exist across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). We identified all US women Veterans, age 18-44y with evidence of homelessness in VHA administrative data between fiscal years 2002-2015, in order to document the geographic distribution of ever-homeless women Veterans in relation to VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) and assess geographic associations between long acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) or permanent contraception (PC) use

Barriers to contraception and interest in over-the-counter access among low-income women: a qualitative study.

CONTEXT: Barriers to contraceptive access encourage nonuse and gaps in use, which contribute to the high prevalence of unintended pregnancy in the United States. One strategy to improve access to oral contraceptives is to make them available without a prescription. METHODS: From March 2007 to January 2009, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were conducted with 45 low-income women in the Boston area to explore how they obtain contraceptives and their opinions about making oral contraceptives available over the counter. Transcripts of the discussions and interviews were deductively

Opportunities, needs and barriers to preconception health and access to preferred contraception: a qualitative study of underserved migrant women.

BACKGROUND: Nearly a third of women (we have used the terms women/woman but recognise that not all pregnant or birthing people identify as women) who give birth in England and Wales are migrants (born outside the UK). Preconception health inequalities exist between underserved migrant women and UK-born women, but evidence for why they occur is scant. We aimed to explore the opportunities, needs and barriers to contraception and preconception health among underserved migrant women. METHODS: Twenty interviews and two focus groups were undertaken with 38 migrant women (asylum seekers, refugees a

Effective, recommended, underutilized: a review of the literature on barriers to adolescent usage of long-acting reversible contraceptive methods.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Teenage pregnancy rates in the United States remain at epidemic proportions. To help stem the tide of adolescent pregnancy, both the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have released policy statements that long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) be considered the first-line option for contraception in adolescents. Despite the recommendations and efficacy, LARCs are utilized by less than 5% of American teens. The purpose of this review is to elucidate the barriers to adolescent access to LARC, which are broken down into

"It Would Have Been Nice to Have a Choice": Barriers to Contraceptive Decision-making among Women with Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Engaging in contraceptive decisions is an important part of reproductive health for women and other people with the capacity for pregnancy. However, not all individuals capable of pregnancy have equal access to information and/or opportunities to make fully informed decisions. The goal of this study was to understand barriers women with disabilities experience around contraceptive decision-making and whether these differ based on type of disability. METHODS: We conducted focus groups with 17 reproductive age adult women (aged 18-45 years). Focus groups were homogenous with regar

Community Health Centers' Practices, Barriers, and Facilitators for Providing a 1-Year Supply of Oral Contraception on Site.

INTRODUCTION: High-quality family planning services help women to achieve their preferred family size and birth spacing, which in turn leads to improved health outcomes and better quality of life. This study investigates whether women have access to a 1-year supply of oral contraceptives (OCs) on site when they receive care at community health centers and whether states require coverage for a 1-year supply. METHODS: This study used a concurrent, mixed-methods approach, with a single phase of quantitative research (survey of health centers) and two phases of qualitative research (50-state poli
