The need for psychosexual counselling in family planning practice.

In this review article, the case in favour of the need for psychosexual counselling in family planning practice will be presented. Since psychosexual counselling is a multidisciplinary subject, family planning clinics and practices are ideally suited to the task. In presenting the case, liberal illustrative examples are provided in order to depict what the current and suggested extended facilities and techniques involve. The article is also intended to act as a comprehensive guide for students, nurses, medical practitioners and specialists alike, to bring them up to date in new concepts in his

Spontaneous foetal losses in women using different contraceptives around the time of conception.

Spontaneous losses between the 5th and 27th weeks of pregnancy were measured in a prospective study of 32 123 women whose contraceptive history around the time of conception was known. Diaphragm use prior to conception was associated with a significant reduction in second-trimester losses, after taking into account the effects of age, parity, race, marital status, alcohol use, and previous spontaneous or induced abortions. Women who used oral contraceptives and stopped them more than one month prior to their LMP experienced a deficit of first-trimester losses but conceptions occurring immediat

Prevalence of gonorrhoea among women using various methods of contraception.

Among 2,005 women attending a contraceptive clinic 9-3 per cent. were found to have gonorrhoea. When these women were classified according to the method of contraception used at the time of their initial visit to the clinic, the following prevalence of gonorrhoea was observed: oral contraceptives 11-5 per cent., intrauterine contraceptive devices 9-9 per cent., barrier methods (condom-diaphragm-foam) 4-2 per cent. These differences are statistically significant. The authors suggest that the additional protective advantage of barrier methods should be considered when the physician and patient a

Factors associated with the use of irreversible contraception and continuous use of reversible contraception in a cohort of HIV-positive women.

BACKGROUND: Effective contraception can be lifesaving by reducing maternal mortality linked to childbirth and unsafe abortion and by reducing vertical and horizontal transmission of HIV, in the case of an HIV-positive woman. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study. We assessed factors associated with the use of irreversible contraception and the continuous use of reversible contraception in HIV-positive Thai women. We used descriptive statistics to present baseline characteristics and logistic regression to assess the association between contraceptive us

Correlates of reported modern contraceptive use among postpartum HIV-positive women in rural Nigeria: an analysis from the MoMent prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria has an annual population of ~ 200,000 women who are both pregnant and HIV-positive. High unmet need for family planning in this population could lead to unintended pregnancies, along with the increased risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (MTCT). To identify modifiable barriers and facilitators in effective family planning, we examined correlates of modern contraceptive use among HIV-positive women enrolled in the MoMent prevention of MTCT (PMTCT) implementation research study in rural North-Central Nigeria. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, HIV-positive pr

An Educational Intervention to Raise Awareness of Contraceptive Options Among Young People.

Background: Young people in the United States know little about contraceptive options available to them, although method use is sensitive to individual preferences, and method switching is common. For young people to gain reproductive autonomy, a first step is to be aware of different contraceptives, including hormonal and nonhormonal methods. We tested whether an educational intervention delivered on community college campuses was effective in increasing contraceptive awareness. Materials and Methods: We developed a low-cost educational intervention featuring youth-friendly visual tools and t

Revolutionizing male contraception: Personal lubricants as a novel way to deliver the Human Contraception Antibody.

STUDY QUESTION: Can personal lubricants effectively deliver the sperm-agglutinating Human Contraception Antibody (HCA) to achieve on-demand male contraception? SUMMARY ANSWER: This study demonstrates that several water-based lubricants can effectively deliver bioactive HCA, and that a dimethicone-containing silicone lubricant can be modified into a stable emulsion suitable for antibody delivery. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The HCA-based vaginal film ZB-06 was shown to be safe and effective in a Phase I clinical trial for female contraception. Male contraceptive options remain limited. Alternatives to female sterilization.

With national policies aimed at reaching zero population growth in the shortest possible time, many countries have introduced restrictive legislation and disincentive programs in an attempt to decrease family size norms to 2 or 3 children. As a result, younger women of lower parity are being sterilized, with consequences that will be seen in the years to come. Although female sterilization is usually associated with minimal complications and side effects and is highly effective without continuing motivation or promotion, it has the disadvantage of causing permanent, essentially irreversible st

Knowledge of contraceptive effectiveness and method use among women in Hanoi, Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between contraceptive knowledge and type of method used. METHODS: We analyzed data from a cross-sectional study of sexually active women in Hanoi, Vietnam, not desiring pregnancy. We used linear and logistic regression to evaluate contraceptive knowledge of users of the intrauterine device (IUD), combination oral contraception (COC) and male condoms. We measured contraceptive knowledge with seven questions on relative effectiveness of methods, reversibility, covert use, contraindications and side effects. RESULTS: Respondents used IUD (n = 128), COC (n

Young men's awareness and knowledge of intrauterine devices in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing use of long-acting methods of contraception, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs), has been recognized as a promising strategy to reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy. While men may play an important role in promoting or discouraging contraceptive use, very little research has examined men's knowledge of and attitudes toward IUDs. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from the 903 men included in the 2009 National Survey of Reproductive and Contraceptive Knowledge to examine their awareness and knowledge of IUDs and other contraceptive methods by several individual-level cha

Delivery at Catholic hospitals and postpartum contraception use, five US states, 2015-2018.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the prevalence of postpartum contraceptive use was lower among people who delivered at a Catholic hospital compared to a non-Catholic hospital. METHODS: We linked 2015-2018 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey data from five states to hospital information from the corresponding birth certificate file. People with a live birth self-reported their use of contraception methods on the PRAMS survey at 2-6 months postpartum, which we coded into two dichotomous (yes vs. no) outcomes for use of female sterilization and highly-effective contracepti

The development and regression of deciduosarcomas and other lesions caused by estrogens and progestins in rabbits.

A series of experiments were conducted to study the histopathological effects of a combination of exogenous estrogens and progestins in mature rabbits. Estradiol (14-45 microg/day) and levonorgestrel (30-233 microg/day) were administered by intravaginal or subdermal Silastic devices for various time intervals to study the development of lesions with time and to determine if lesions regressed following withdrawal of the steroids. The origin of splenic decidual tumors (primary or metastasis from the uterus) was determined by administering the same steroid combination to castrated male rabbits. I

The oral pill in the Indonesian Population/Family Planning Program.

The oral pill is the most extensively used contraceptive in Indonesia. Of new users, 64% use the pill, 20% IUDs, 8% injectables, 6% condoms and 2% voluntary sterilization. Since the continuation rate of pill use is low as compared to the other non-permanent methods, i.e. the IUD and the injectables, special steps must be taken in order to reach the goal of the program, i.e. the reduction of the crude birth rate (CBR) to 22/1000 by the year 1990. These special steps involve selecting the best pill for Indonesian women, and determining the best contraceptive combination for each region and for n
