OBJECTIVE: The National Survey of Family Growth has been a primary data source for trends in US women's contraceptive use. However, national-level data may mask differences in contraceptive practice resulting from variation in local policies and norms.
STUDY DESIGN: We used the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, a survey of women who are 2-4 months postpartum. Information on women's current method was available for 18 reporting areas from 2000 to 2009. Using the two most recent years of data, we computed the weighted proportion of women using specific contraceptive methods according

Understanding the impact of family planning policy and actions is essential for building effective strategies to increase contraceptive use. This study identifies policies that correlate with modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) and private-sector contraceptive method mix strategies (the number of contraceptive methods offered in the private sector) in low-income and middle-income countries. While education, contraceptive choices, and economic growth are known determinants of contraceptive prevalence, many national policies intended to increase contraceptive prevalence in the short term

BACKGROUND: Data on the effect of contraceptive methods, other than the condom, on HIV acquisition is not clear. The aim of this study was to describe hormonal contraceptive use, sexual behaviour and HIV prevalence among women in Cameroon in order to provide baseline information for future analytical studies.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study based a nationally representative sample of 4486 sexually active women aged 15-49 years who participated in the 2004 Cameroon Demographic and Health Survey.
RESULTS: The overall HIV prevalence was 7.4% (332/4486). The HIV prevalence w

Introduction The immediate postpartum period represents a critical opportunity to initiate contraception to prevent short interpregnancy intervals and associated adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. However, uptake of postpartum contraception remains low in many low-resource settings despite increasing rates of caesarean delivery. This study assessed the uptake and determinants of immediate postpartum contraception (IPPC) following cesarean delivery in Uganda. Objectives To determine the prevalence of IPPC uptake and factors associated with IPPC among women delivering by cesarean section (C

The Family Planning Program in Bangladesh has been very successful. The contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) has increased from 13% in 1979 to 49% in 1996. Now that the program has matured and demand for family planning has been created, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) of the Government of Bangladesh is concerned with increasing its financial sustainability. Options to increase financial sustainability include cost sharing and a gradual transition from doorstep to static clinic delivery of contraceptives. Many of these alternatives would involve additional travel time or charg

Often in demography, individuals may change state over time for a variety of reasons. Competing-risks hazards models have been developed to model such situations. This paper describes the extension of the discrete-time competing-risks hazards model to a multilevel framework that allows for data at different levels of aggregation. The model is illustrated with data from the 1988 Chinese National Survey of Fertility and Contraceptive Prevalence, which collected complete contraceptive histories. Women may stop using a method of contraception for a number of reasons; this paper describes how one c

BACKGROUND: Increased contraceptive use has been associated with a decrease in high parity births, births that occur close together in time, and births to very young or to older women. These types of births are also associated with high risk of under-five mortality. Previous studies have looked at the change in the level of contraception use and the average change in these types of high-risk births. We aim to predict the distribution of births in a specific country when there is a change in the level and method of modern contraception.
METHODS: We used data from full birth histories and moder

As in other post-Soviet settings, induced abortion has been widely used in Armenia. However, recent national survey data point to a substantial drop in abortion rates with no commensurate increase in modern contraceptive prevalence and no change in fertility levels. We use data from in-depth interviews with women of reproductive age and health providers in rural Armenia to explore possible underreporting of both contraceptive use and abortion. While we find no evidence that women understate their use of modern contraception, the analysis suggests that induced abortion might indeed be underrepo

OBJECTIVES: Studies in several sub-Saharan geographies conducted early in the COVID-19 pandemic suggested little impact on contraceptive behaviours. Initial results may mask widening disparities with rising poverty, and changes to women's pregnancy desires and contraceptive use amid prolonged health service disruptions. This study examined trends in contraceptive behaviours in four sub-Saharan African settings 1 year into the pandemic.
DESIGN: Nationally and regionally representative longitudinal surveys.
SETTING: Burkina Faso, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa) and Nigeria (Lago

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of modern contraceptive use is an important indicator that reflects accessibility to reproductive health services. Satisfying unmet needs for family planning alone could reduce the number of maternal deaths by almost a third. This study uses multiple data sources to examine multilevel factors associated with the use of modern contraceptives among married women in Vietnam aged 15-49 years.
DESIGN: Data from different national surveys (Vietnam Population and Housing Census, Vietnam Living Standard Survey, and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey) were linked to create a

The use of modern contraceptives both, short-acting and long-acting in most African countries has been low. This study aimed to determine factors affecting the use of modern contraceptive methods among women of reproductive age in 23 sub-Saharan Africa countries. The most recent 2015-2023 DHS data set of 23 SSA countries was used. A total of 230,387 women who completed the survey were included in the study. In the multivariable analysis variables with p-value less than ≤ 0.05 were considered to be factors associated with the use of both short-acting and long-acting modern contraceptive methods

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to assess contraceptive use at last intercourse among adolescent girls with and without disabilities.
METHODS: Data were from the 2015 and 2017 Oregon Healthy Teens survey, a state-wide representative sample of 11th grade students. Among respondents at risk for unplanned pregnancy (n = 3,702), we estimated the prevalence of contraceptive method used at last intercourse-including intrauterine device, implant, Depo-Provera, oral contraceptive pills, patch, ring, condoms, withdrawal, and emergency contraception-by disability status. We used multivariable Poisson

BACKGROUND: Pakistan's contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) has remained static (less than 1% annual increase since 2006) due to several demand and supply issues. The Akhter Hameed Khan Foundation implemented a community-driven, demand-generation intervention with complementary supply side family planning (FP) services in a large urban informal settlement in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
METHODS: The intervention recruited local women as outreach workers called Aapis (sisters), who conducted household outreach and provided counseling, contraceptives, and referrals. Program data were used to guide in-p

BACKGROUND: Family planning (FP) interventions aimed at reducing population growth have negligible during the last two decades in Pakistan. Innovative FP interventions that help reduce the growing population burden are the need of the hour. Marie Stopes Society--Pakistan implemented an operational research project--'Evidence for Innovating to Save Lives', to explore effective and viable intervention models that can promote healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy in rural and under-served communities of Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces of Pakistan.

The last decade has witnessed initiatives to expand access to contraceptives in Brazil. However, the last population-based study on contraception was undertaken in 2006. A household survey in 2015 investigated contraceptive practices in women 15 to 44 years of age living in the city of São Paulo. The current study selected data on young women 15 to 19 years of age. The objectives were to identify the prevalence of contraception, the contraceptives used, sources, and differences in contraceptive practices. The young women are part of a probabilistic study sample. Differences in contraception us

Background: International travel is increasingly popular, and women comprise half of all outbound travel from the United States (almost 46 million trips in 2017). The implications of international travel for women's reproductive health are not fully clear due to lack of data on travelers' contraceptive use. Methods: Women attending a U.S. university (n = 340) completed a cross-sectional survey in 2016-2017 about their sexual and reproductive health during recent international travel. Participants were 18-29 years old (mean: 21.1) and had a history of male sex partners. We calculated the preval

India has a very high prevalence of female sterilisation compared to other countries in the world, with a prevailing situation of very low level of information about contraceptive options given to women. It is well established in demographic research that, there exists a strong association between knowledge of contraceptive methods and type of contraception chosen. Present study uses data from 3 consecutive rounds of National Family Health Survey (3, 4 & 5). The sample contains currently married women who started using the current method 5 years prior to each round of survey. Multilevel Logist

BACKGROUND: Despite availability of modern contraceptive methods and documented unmet need for family planning in Ghana, many women still report forgoing modern contraceptive use due to anticipated side effects. The goal of this study was to examine the use of modern family planning, in particular hormonal methods, in one district in rural Ghana, and to understand the role that side effects play in women's decisions to start or continue use.
METHODS: This exploratory mixed-methods study included 281 surveys and 33 in-depth interviews of women 18-49 years old in the Amansie West District of Gh

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, few studies have stressed the importance of spatial heterogeneity analysis in modern contraceptive use and the relationships with high-risk births.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to analyse the association between modern contraceptive use, distribution of birth risk, and under-five child mortality at both national and regional levels in Burkina Faso.
DESIGN: The last three Demographic and Health Surveys - conducted in Burkina Faso in 1998, 2003, and 2010 - enabled descriptions of differentials, trends, and associations between modern contraceptive use, total fe
