Modeling neural contrast sensitivity functions in human visual cortex.

The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) characterizes visual function, and iswidely used in research on visual perception and ophthalmological disorders. TheCSF describes the lowest contrast level that participants can perceive as afunction of spatial frequency. Here, we present a new method to estimate theneural equivalent of the CSF that describes how a population of neurons respondsto contrast as a function of spatial frequency. Using functional magneticresonance imaging (fMRI) at 7 Tesla, we measured neural responses whileparticipants viewed gratings that varied systematically in contrast

Neural contrast sensitivity is not affected by myopic blur.

The prevalence of myopia is increasing worldwide, accompanied by an increase of potentially under-corrected myopes. Because neural pathways are prone to adaptation in relation to the sensory input, we wondered to what extent neural contrast sensitivity (NCS) is altered in the presence of image blur arising from under-correction. No significant differences in NCS were observed between the three groups but were significantly equivalent between emmetropes, well-corrected, and under-corrected myopes (all p < 0.001). Across all healthy participants, NCS variability increased with increasing spatial

Contrast sensitivity and higher-order aberrations in Keratoconus subjects.

This study analyzes the relationship between contrast-sensitivity and higher-order aberrations (HOA) in mild and subclinical-keratoconus in subjects with good visual-acuity (VA). Keratoconus group (including subclinical-keratoconus) and controls underwent autokeratometry, corneal-tomography, autorefraction and HOA measurement. Contrast-sensitivity was tested using a psychophysical two-alternative forced-choice Gabor patches in three blocks (6, 9, 12 cycles/deg). Controls were compared to the keratoconus group and to a keratoconus subgroup with VA of 0.00 LogMar group ("keratoconus-0.00VA"). Sp

Contrast Sensitivity Loss in Patients With Posttreatment Lyme Disease.

PURPOSE: Posttreatment Lyme disease (PTLD) is marked by neurologic symptoms, cognitive impairment, and significant symptom burden, including fatigue and ocular complaints. The purpose of this study was to determine whether contrast sensitivity (CS) is altered in patients with PTLD compared with healthy controls and, second, whether CS is associated with cognitive and/or neurologic deficits. METHODS: CS was measured using a Pelli-Robson chart with forced-choice procedures, and the total number of letters read was recorded for each eye. CS impairment was defined for age <60 years as logCS of 1.

Contrast sensitivity of MT receptive field centers and surrounds.

Neurons throughout the visual system have receptive fields with both excitatory and suppressive components. The latter are responsible for a phenomenon known as surround suppression, in which responses decrease as a stimulus is extended beyond a certain size. Previous work has shown that surround suppression in the primary visual cortex depends strongly on stimulus contrast. Such complex center-surround interactions are thought to relate to a variety of functions, although little is known about how they affect responses in the extrastriate visual cortex. We have therefore examined the interact

Visual half-field contrast sensitivity in children with dyslexia.

We address the question whether left-hemispheric and/or right-hemispheric contrast thresholds differ between children with dyslexia and controls, and whether there are interhemispheric differences. In order to answer these questions we examined [1] thresholds for the detection of Contrast-Defined (CD) forms to left and right half-field stimulation, and [2] half-field pattern onset Evoked Potentials (EPs) as a function of stimulus contrast in 21 children with dyslexia of 8-15 years of age and in 17 age-matched healthy controls. It was found that (A) children with dyslexia were less sensitive to

VISTECH contrast sensitivity testing in primary open angle glaucoma.

Contrast sensitivity has been recommended as a screening and diagnostic test in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). We tested contrast sensitivity (CS) using Vistech charts in 184 eyes of 95 patients. Three groups were examined--established primary open angle glaucoma, glaucoma suspects and age matched controls. The distribution of contrast sensitivities amongst the three groups were similar. The median contrast sensitivity of glaucoma suspects and controls were well within normal limits while that of the POAG group fell along the lower limit of normal. In all three groups the younger subjects

Contrast sensitivity after wearing prisms to correct for heterophoria.

Contrast sensitivity to sinusoidal gratings was measured at spatial frequencies of 1.5-16 c/deg in 8 subjects before and after wearing prisms (for at least two weeks) to correct heterophoria, prescribed by the full correction method of H.J. Haase (Binocular testing and distance correction with the Berlin Polatest [trans. W. Baldwin]. J. Am. Optom. Assoc. 34, 115-125, 1962). At higher spatial frequencies of 12-16 c/deg, we found an average improvement in contrast sensitivity of 0.15 log unit. This effect is estimated to correspond to an increase in visual acuity of 15%.

[Simple rapid contrast sensitivity test in diagnosis of glaucoma].

BACKGROUND: Psychophysical tests employing high-frequency stimuli are becoming of increasing value in glaucoma diagnosis. In the present study a simple, quick, and sensitive flicker test is described which can be used as an screening examination for glaucoma. METHOD: A flicker test is described which uses a white sinusoidally flickering light presented at 37.1 Hz in a ganzfeld bowl under photopic conditions (ca 10 cd/m2. Fication is not necessary. The modulation (temporal contrast) of the flicker light is varied in small steps until flicker threshold is reached. The reciprocal of the threshol

Contrast sensitivity in multiple sclerosis measured by Cambridge Low Contrast Gratings: a useful clinical test?

The Cambridge Low Contrast Gratings (CLCG) were used to assess contrast sensitivity (CS) in 39 patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis and 60 control subjects. CS was determined in both horizontal and vertical orientations and compared with visual evoked responses (VERs) in the same populations. Only 33% of patients had abnormal CS whereas 82% had abnormal VERs. There was no correlation between the degree of abnormalities in CS and VERs. There was no significant difference between CS determined in the vertical and horizontal orientation; however, examination in the vertical orient

Contrast Sensitivity Impairment in Diabetic Retinopathy: Clinical and Structural Correlates.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the main causes of vision impairment globally, and it is increasingly recognized as a neurovascular disease characterized by both microvascular and neural dysfunction. Traditional assessment approaches primarily focus on structural retinal alterations and visual acuity, which may fail to identify early functional impairments. Contrast sensitivity (CS), which measures the capacity to distinguish subtle luminance differences, is increasingly recognized as an early manifestation of retinal dysfunction in diabetes mellitus. This narrative review seeks to describ

Lateral inhibition in V1 controls neural and perceptual contrast sensitivity.

Lateral inhibition is a central principle in sensory system function. It is thought to operate by the activation of inhibitory neurons that restrict the spatial spread of sensory excitation. However, the neurons, computations and mechanisms underlying cortical lateral inhibition remain debated, and its importance for perception remains unknown. Here we show that lateral inhibition from parvalbumin neurons in mouse primary visual cortex reduced neural and perceptual sensitivity to visual contrast in a uniform subtractive manner, whereas lateral inhibition from somatostatin neurons more effectiv
