Pragmatic randomised controlled trial of group psychoeducation versus group support in the maintenance of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Non-didactically delivered curriculum based group psychoeducation has been shown to be more effective than both group support in a specialist mood disorder centre in Spain (with effects lasting up to five years), and treatment as usual in Australia. It is unclear whether the specific content and form of group psychoeducation is effective or the chance to meet and work collaboratively with other peers. The main objective of this trial is to determine whether curriculum based group psychoeducation is more clinically and cost effective than unstructured peer group support. METHODS/DE

Use of group quarantine in Ebola control - Nigeria, 2014.

On July 20, 2014, the first known case of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in Nigeria, in a traveler from Liberia, led to an outbreak that was successfully curtailed with infection control, contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine measures coordinated through an incident management system. During this outbreak, most contacts underwent home monitoring, which included instructions to stay home or to avoid crowded areas if staying home was not possible. However, for five contacts with high-risk exposures, group quarantine in an observation unit was preferred because the five had crowded home environ

[Approaches to the choice of control group for a pathomorphological study of the heart].

It is generally accepted that an optimal control group for pathomorphological studies of the heart should be constituted by individuals who died from a craniocerebral injury without near-death experience. Polarization microscopy is a principal tool for the assessment of pathomorphological characteristics of myocardium. The presence of ethanol in the blood of a dead individual is associated with enhanced permeability of vascular walls, venous plethora, sludge phenomenon, microcirculatory thrombosis, perivascular and intermuscular oedema but does not on the whole interfere with the objective eva

Time processing in Huntington's disease: a group-control study.

BACKGROUND: "Timing" processes are mediated via a disturbed neuronal network including the basal ganglia. Brain structures important for "timing" are also discussed to be critical for the deterioration of movements in Huntington's disease (HD). Changes in "timing processes" are found in HD, but no study has varied the degree of motor demands in timing functions in parallel in HD. It may be hypothesized that timing functions may be deteriorated to a different extent in motor and non-motor timing, because in motor timing the underlying brain structures may be more demanding than in non-motor tim

Interpersonal violence in a "normal" low-income control group.

This paper examines the rates of interpersonal violence and trauma reported in a sample of 98 urban, low-income women, predominantly Latina or African-American descent constituting a "normal" control group for a larger study on drug abuse and violence. This sample was recruited from the obstetrics-gynecology outpatient clinic at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City and carefully screened for the absence of any DSM-IV Axis I psychopathology including major mood disorders, anxiety, psychotic, alcohol and substance use disorders. Consistent with the literature, our sample exhibit

Impediments to the control of hypertension. Hypertension Management Audit Group.

Despite the great therapeutic advances, the control of hypertension in populations is far below the achievable level, even in populations with highly developed health care. By the end of the 1980's, in selected European centres, 18-34% of cases of hypertension were undetected, and among those previously known, 22-38% were untreated. The cooperative WHO/WHL Hypertension Management Audit Project aimed at assessing some of the impediments to better control of hypertension. The concepts and attitudes of 2,215 physicians were surveyed. In various centres and at various patient ages, 25-45% of physi

Leadership Skills Training in Physicians: Comparison to a Control Group.

INTRODUCTION: While the impact of physician leadership training has been demonstrated through descriptive studies, work comparing such programs to control groups of self-directed or on-the-job leadership training has proven challenging to implement. METHODS: We designed a comparative study, using pre-and post-test methodology, to assess change in leadership skill level and skill use. We compared 2 groups of OBGYN physicians including individuals who had completed an annually offered Intentional Leadership Training (ILT) program as compared to those completing self-directed or on-the-job leade

Elite controllers: A heterogeneous group of HIV-infected patients.

The exceptional group of ECs has been of great help, and will continue to provide invaluable insight with regard to reach a potential functional cure of HIV. However, there is no consensus on the immune correlates associated to this EC phenotype which preclude reaching a potential functional cure of HIV. The existing literature studying this population of individuals has indeed revealed that they are a very heterogeneous group regarding virological, immunological, and even clinical characteristics, and that among ECs only a very small proportion are homogeneous in terms of maintaining virologi

The Personality Profile of Tinnitus Sufferers and a Nontinnitus Control Group.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tinnitus (phantom perception of sound) significantly disrupts quality of life in 15-20% of those who experience it. Understanding how certain personality traits impact tinnitus perception and distress can be beneficial for the development of interventions to improve the lives of tinnitus sufferers. PURPOSE: Four key self-reported personality traits (social closeness, stress reaction, alienation, and self-control) were identified from previous research as being associated with tinnitus. These were compared between tinnitus and age-, gender-, and hearing level-matched nontin

Cardiogoniometry in psoriatic patients and its comparison with a control group.

BACKGROUND: Cardiogoniometry (CGM), a spatiotemporal electrocardiologic method may be useful as a cardiovascular diagnostic tool. Increased incidence of coronary artery or myocardial involvement and defects in automatic setting of heart activity have been reported in psoriasis which could be related to the presence of systemic inflammation. Cardiogoniometry and the related parameters have been used in this study as a diagnostic technique in psoriasis patients. METHODS: Thirty patients with psoriasis and 30 healthy, age and sex-matched individuals with no history of cardiovascular diseases or

Self-interest versus group-interest in antiviral control.

Antiviral agents have been hailed to hold considerable promise for the treatment and prevention of emerging viral diseases like H5N1 avian influenza and SARS. However, antiviral drugs are not completely harmless, and the conditions under which individuals are willing to participate in a large-scale antiviral drug treatment program are as yet unknown. We provide population dynamical and game theoretical analyses of large-scale prophylactic antiviral treatment programs. Throughout we compare the antiviral control strategy that is optimal from the public health perspective with the control strate

Open cholecystectomy: a control group for comparison with laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is rapidly becoming accepted as the best method for the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis. Randomized clinical trials comparing laparoscopic cholecystectomy with open cholecystectomy are unlikely to be performed. In order to compare these two operations, surgeons need an historical control group of patients who have undergone a conventional open cholecystectomy. The aim of this study was to document a control group of patients having an open cholecystectomy and compare them with patients having a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This was achieved by a retrospect

Costs Attributable to Falls Based on Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs) Analysis of Hospitalised Patients: A Case-Control Study.

Background/objectives: Falls are the most common adverse events in hospitals. This study aimed to estimate excess hospitalisation costs attributable to inpatient falls, using Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) relative weights as a proxy for resource consumption. Methods: Case-control study. Cases included patients who had sustained a fall during hospitalisation between 2020 and 2022 in 19 inpatient units. Controls were selected with matching technique based on age and admission period. Diagnosis-Related Groups and their resource consumption and cost estimators (relative weights) were provided by t

Femoral anteversion linked to the inability to squat: Analysis of CT images in the patient and control groups.

Many patients who cannot squat well in a neutral toe position can only squat in an excessively out-toeing position. This excessive out-toeing squat is thought to be caused by rotational problems of the lower extremities. In this study, we aimed to identify the cause for the inability to squat by measuring and comparing femoral and tibial torsion between an excessive out-toeing squat patient group and a control group representing the general population. Between 2008 and 2022, a patient group comprising 50 lower extremities with excessive out-toeing squats was established. A control group repres

Ultrasonographic and resistance index evaluation of nails in psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, and control groups: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nail psoriasis occurs frequently in patients with psoriatic disease, it can lead to functional impairment, pain, discomfort, decreased quality of life and can also be a predictor for the development of arthritis. Early recognition of this condition can provide early and effective treatment and prevent structural impairment. This study aims to identify nail ultrasonographic characteristics in three groups: psoriasis (PsO), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and controls patients, to determine if the ultrasonography (US) can identify early signs of nail psoriatic impairment or local inflammat

Association between ABO, Rh blood groups, lip and dermatoglyphic patterns, and nonsyndromic oral clefts: A case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is to determine the association between nonsyndromic oral clefts (OC) in children and ABO, Rh blood groups, lip, and dermatoglyphic patterns of their unaffected parents. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted at a tertiary cleft center in Chennai, India, among 240 individuals comprising 80 units (40 cases and controls, respectively). Each unit (triad) was constituted by a child (0-12 years of age) either born with nonsyndromic OC (cases) or with no diagnosed congenital anomaly (control) and their unaffected parents (mother and father). Neurocognitive functions in patients on buprenorphine maintenance for opioid dependence: A comparative study with three matched control groups.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive dysfunction with buprenorphine has mixed evidence, with many confounding factors. We compared the neurocognitive functions in patients with opioid dependence on buprenorphine maintenance (Index Group; IG) with those on naltrexone (NG), opioid-dependent in early detoxification (OD), and healthy control (CG). MATERIALS & METHODS: The four groups were matched for age, sex, and years of education. Except for the healthy control group (CG; n = 30), the two other comparison groups had twenty participants each. Subjects with other substance use disorders, HIV infection, he
