Impact of coping styles on substance use in persons with psychosis, siblings, and controls.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is overrepresented in patients with psychosis. Maladaptive coping has been proposed as one of the mechanisms which might underlie this high prevalence. Patients are known to apply more maladaptive coping compared to the healthy population. However, it is unknown whether coping is associated with the use of different substances across those with different vulnerability for psychosis, and whether coping mediates the possible association between life events and substance use. METHODS: In this multicenter, cohort study, 429 patients, 504 siblings, and 220 controls were i

Substance Use Motives as Mediators of the Associations between Self-Control Constructs and Negative Substance Use Consequences: A Cross-Cultural Examination.

The present study sought to examine three distinct research questions: a) are self-control constructs (i.e., negative/positive urgency, self-regulation, and emotion-regulation) indirectly related to negative alcohol/marijuana consequences via substance use motives, b) to what extent are these indirect effects consistent across differing drugs (i.e., alcohol and marijuana), and c) are these models invariant across gender and countries. Participants were 2,230 college students (mean age=20.28, SD=0.40; 71.1% females) across 7 countries (USA, Canada, Spain, England, Argentina, Uruguay, and South

Stretchable, controlled release of active substances, and biodegradable chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel film for antibacterial and chilled meat preservation.

In this study, we utilized chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the hydrogel matrix to fabricate a multifunctional hydrogel packaging film through the dimethylsulfoxide/hydroxybenzotriazole activation system-mediated. Based on the evaluation of thermal stability and mechanical properties, the optimal polymerization ratio of PVA to CS was determined as 3:1. Hydrogels made of 6 % PVA and 2 % CS have excellent heat resistance and adhesion, with a remarkable breakage elongation of 754.3 %. The cross-linking of PVA, CS, and ε-PL polymers occurred through esterification and amide reactions i

A chronically implantable device for the controlled delivery of substances, and stimulation and recording of activity in severed nerves.

We describe the use of an implantable device for peripheral nerves that allows chronic simultaneous delivery of small volumes of solution, recording of both field and multiunit potentials, and electrical stimulation. This custom-made multifunctional device was attached to the cut end of the abducens (VIth) nerve for stimulation, recording and injection purposes. Our device consists of a polyethylene chamber with two electrodes that can be used for stimulation and recording and two Teflon tubes that serve as inlet and outlet for administering chemicals to the nerve fitted inside. Since the devi

Neighborhood Social Disorganization in Early Adolescence and Substance Use Trajectories into Young Adulthood: The Moderating Role of Effortful Control and Parental Substance Use.

Adolescents living in socially disorganized neighborhoods may consume substances more frequently. Although some evidence suggests that such potential neighborhood influences persist into young adulthood, findings remain inconsistent. More research is needed that includes different indicators of neighborhood social disorganization, substance use outcomes, and family- and individual-level moderating factors. To address these gaps, this study examined the associations between three indicators of neighborhood social disorganization—social fragmentation, socioeconomic deprivation, and disorder—in e

AI-Integrated Molecularly Imprinted Gate-Controlled Nanozyme-Based Field-Deployable Multimodal Assay of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Environmental Waters.

The significant risks posed by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to water quality and public health have attracted increasing attention as a class of emerging contaminants. Efficient onsite assay of PFAS in environmental waters is critical for risk traceability, early warning, and safeguarding water security, yet it is hindered by challenges in accuracy, practicality, and intelligence. Here, we proposed a universal artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) gate-controlled the enzyme-like activity of nanozyme strategy-driven multimodal onsite assay for P

Enhanced immobilisation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using a combination of sorbents and plants: A controlled rainfall simulation study.

Activated carbon (AC) has been widely used to remediate soil contamination caused by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Groundcover by vegetation has also shown potential in limiting off-site movement of PFAS from contaminated sites. However, the effectiveness of AC and groundcover in mitigating PFAS migration from soil has not been adequately studied. A rainfall simulation was conducted to investigate the migration of PFAS from PFAS-spiked soil via leaching, runoff and suspended materials during storm events. The efficiency of two AC sorbents (1 % w/w) and groundcover (perennial ryeg

The abuse potential of lemborexant, a dual orexin receptor antagonist, according to the 8 factors of the Controlled Substances Act.

RATIONALE: Lemborexant (LEM) is a dual orexin receptor antagonist (DORA) approved in multiple countries including the USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, and several Asian countries for the treatment of insomnia in adults. As a compound with central nervous system activity, it is important to understand the abuse potential of LEM with respect to public health. OBJECTIVES: This review discusses data for LEM relevant to each of the 8 factors of the United States Controlled Substances Act. RESULTS: LEM did not demonstrate abuse potential in nonclinical testing and was associated with a low incidence

Do individuals with ADHD self-medicate with cigarettes and substances of abuse? Results from a controlled family study of ADHD.

Studies report increased rates of cigarette and substance use in youths with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), though the mechanism of risk remains unclear. The present study tests the hypothesis that ADHD individuals "self-medicate" with cigarettes and substances of abuse. As part of five- and ten-year case-control longitudinal family studies of ADHD, responses to the Drug Use Screening Inventory (DUSI) were examined for evidence of self-medication. DUSI data from 90 ADHD probands and 96 control probands were obtained. Thirty-six percent of subjects reported self-medication, 25

Childhood exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and neurodevelopment in the CHARGE case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are shown to have neurotoxic effects on animals, but epidemiological evidence for associations between childhood PFAS exposure and neurodevelopment is inconclusive. We examined if childhood PFAS concentrations are associated with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental delay (DD), and other early concerns (OEC) in development. METHODS: We included 551 children 2-5 years old from the CHildhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) case-control study. Children were clinically diagnosed and classified as ha

Orthorexia nervosa and substance use for the purposes of weight control, conformity, and emotional coping.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia nervosa (ON), characterized by extreme behaviors driven by the goal of eating only healthy and pure foods, could plausibly be associated with avoidance of nicotine, alcohol, and illicit drugs. However, findings from the limited research on these relationships are mixed, and other eating disorders are associated with greater substance abuse. METHOD: An online survey was completed by 471 participants (86% women, mean age = 20) recruited from undergraduate courses and through an Instagram advertisement. The questionnaires assessed ON symptomatology; frequency of smoking, alco

Effects of prenatal substance exposure on neurocognitive correlates of inhibitory control success and failure.

Adolescents with prenatal substance (drug and alcohol) exposure exhibit inhibitory control (IC) deficits and aberrations in associated neural function. Nearly all research to date examines exposure to individual substances, and a minimal amount is known about the effects of heterogeneous exposure-which is more representative of population exposure levels. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated IC (Go/NoGo) in heterogeneously exposed (n = 7) vs. control (n = 7) at-risk adolescents (ages 13-17). The fMRI results indicated multiple IC processing differences consistent

The impact of pre-injury controlled substance use on clinical outcomes after trauma.

BACKGROUND: A disproportionately high percentage of trauma patients use controlled substances, and they often co-ingest multiple drugs. Previous studies have evaluated the effect of individual drugs on clinical outcomes after trauma. However, the impact of all drugs included in a comprehensive screening panel has not yet been compared in a single cohort of patients. METHODS: All trauma patients who underwent urine drug screens after admission to the LAC + USC Medical Center (January 2008-June 2015) were identified retrospectively. Univariable and multivariable regression analyses determined t

Different modes of action of substance P in the motor control of the feline stomach and pylorus.

In an experimental in vivo model to study gastropyloric motility in the cat a contraction of the stomach and the pyloric sphincter was regularly obtained in animals subjected to electrical vagal nerve stimulation or local intraarterial (i.a.) injection of substance P (SP). Much more infrequently contractile motor responses were recorded at splanchnic nerve stimulation. The contractile effects of SP were sensitive to atropine or local infusion of a SP analogue, (D-Pro2,D-Trp7,9)-SP, indicating that SP activated a final common cholinergic neuron in both stomach and pylorus. However, there seemed
