Convective storms alter bioaerosol populations through cold pools and precipitation.

Meteorology can alter bioaerosol properties, potentially enhancing their impact on public health and cloud microphysics. The BioAerosols and Convective Storms (BACS) study was conducted over May-June 2022 and 2023 in Northern Colorado and examines how convective storm processes such as precipitation and cold pools affect bioaerosol concentrations and properties, including pollen, fungal spores and bacterial endotoxin. The two seasons were vastly different climatologically, with drought-like conditions and greater endotoxin concentrations during 2022 and near record rainfall with higher fungal

An Australian convective wind gust climatology using Bayesian hierarchical modelling.

To quantify the hazard or risks associated with severe convective wind gusts, it is necessary to have a reliable and spatially complete climatology of these events. The coupling of observational and global reanalysis (ERA-Interim) data over the period 2005-2015 is used here to facilitate the development of a spatially complete convective wind gust climatology for Australia. This is done through the development of Bayesian Hierarchical models that use both weather station-based wind gust observations and seasonally averaged severe weather indices (SWI), calculated using reanalysis data, to esti

Characterization and analysis of real-time capillary convective PCR toward commercialization.

Almost all the reported capillary convective polymerase chain reaction (CCPCR) systems to date are still limited to research use stemming from unresolved issues related to repeatability, reliability, convenience, and sensitivity. To move CCPCR technology forward toward commercialization, a couple of critical strategies and innovations are discussed here. First, single- and dual-end heating strategies are analyzed and compared between each other. Especially, different solutions for dual-end heating are proposed and discussed, and the heat transfer and fluid flow inside the capillary tube with a

Are all dialyzers compatible with the convective volumes suggested for postdilution online hemodiafiltration?

INTRODUCTION: The recent analysis of 4 randomized controlled trials has confirmed the lower mortality risk for postdilution online hemodiafiltration (OL-HDF) compared to hemodialysis, and above all for patients with the highest delivered body surface area standardized convective volume (CV/BSA >23 L/1.73 m²/session). Since the impact of the dialyzers used in these trials has never been studied, we retrospectively analyzed clinical tests carried out with 19 commonly used dialyzers. The aim was to provide information on their performances and behavior to aid in an objective choice for therapi

Growth of helicity in salt-finger convection in the two-dimensional three-component limit.

We present an analytical investigation of the global helicity budget associated with the salt-fingering instability within the two-dimensional, three-component framework. Our analysis shows that in the region of parameter space corresponding to salt fingering, helicity amplification occurs when the Rayleigh ratio-quantifying the relative strength of salinity to temperature gradients-exceeds a critical threshold. This finding provides a possible theoretical explanation for the spontaneous emergence of helicity, observed in recent numerical simulations.

Thermal Enhancement of LED Cooling Systems Using Passive Tesla Valves for Turbulence-Induced Convection.

This study presents an experimental methodology for assessing the thermal behavior of high-power Chip-On-Board (COB) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using infrared thermography, integrated with a novel compact forced-convection cooling device. The thermal performance was evaluated under varying power inputs and flow rates, revealing the system's ability to maintain LED junction temperatures below critical thresholds. Thermographic imaging enabled the spatially resolved temperature analysis of the LED surface under both natural and forced convection regimes. The proposed cooling device was specifi

MRI-guided intracerebral convection-enhanced injection of gliotoxins to induce focal demyelination in swine.

Demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or transverse myelitis are devastating neurological conditions with no effective cure. Prevention of myelin loss or restoration of myelin are key for successful therapy. To investigate the disease and develop cures animal models with good clinical relevance are essential. The goal of the current study was to establish a model of focal demyelination in the brain of domestic pig using MRI-guided gliotoxin delivery. The rationale for developing a new myelin disease model in the domestic pig was based on the fact that the brain in pigs is ana

Regression of recurrent glioblastoma infiltrating the brainstem after convection-enhanced delivery of nimustine hydrochloride.

This 13-year-old boy with a history of cranial irradiation for the CNS recurrence of acute lymphocytic leukemia developed a glioblastoma in the right cerebellum. Resection and chemo- and radiotherapy induced remission of the disease. However, recurrence was noted in the brainstem region 8 months later. Because no effective treatment was available for this recurrent lesion, the authors decided to use convection-enhanced delivery (CED) to infuse nimustine hydrochloride. On stereotactic insertion of the infusion cannula into the brainstem lesion, CED of nimustine hydrochloride was performed with

Ultrasensitive detection of mercury (II) ions using electrochemical surface plasmon resonance with magnetohydrodynamic convection.

A high-precision technique that can detect mercury (II) ions down to 1 fM concentration in aqueous solutions is introduced. The technique combines the conventional electrochemical method, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) convection. Mercury ions are electroplated onto a gold SPR sensing surface, and then detected quantitatively by applying a potential scan with cyclic voltammetry. Both the SPR angular shift and the electrochemical current signal are recorded for identification and quantification of the mercury ions. The detection sensitivity is further enhanced by

Influence of thermal effects on buoyancy-driven convection around autocatalytic chemical fronts propagating horizontally.

The spatiotemporal dynamics of vertical autocatalytic fronts traveling horizontally in thin solution layers closed to the air can be influenced by buoyancy-driven convection induced by density gradients across the front. We perform here a combined experimental and theoretical study of the competition between solutal and thermal effects on such convection. Experimentally, we focus on the antagonistic chlorite-tetrathionate reaction for which solutal and thermal contributions to the density jump across the front have opposite signs. We show that in isothermal conditions the heavier products sink

Onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection at fuel-ablator interfaces in inertial confinement fusion simulations.

We demonstrate the onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) near the fuel-ablator interface of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosion simulations for the scenario in which Rayleigh-Taylor or Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities are suppressed. This convective heating within the cold fuel can degrade the adiabat and therefore performance of ICF implosions even without mixing of fuel and ablator. Our work suggests additional considerations to realize design adiabats in otherwise ideal ICF implosions: first, via control of the temperature differences between ablator and fuel and, second, control

Protocols and safety profile of convection enhanced delivery in pediatric patients: a systematic review.

Convection-enhanced delivery (CED) is a developmental drug delivery system enabling direct, intraparenchymal placement of therapeutics that bypass the blood-brain barrier. This systematic review aggregates and outlines the available data surrounding current applications and adverse events of pediatric CED to benchmark safety as protocols expand. A comprehensive search through CINAHL, Cochrane, OVID Medline, and Scopus databases was conducted using a modified PRISMA analysis. After deduplication and screening, final articles were selected for data extraction. Of 108 unique articles, 12 studies

Convection-enhanced delivery of dexamethasone in glioma suppresses myeloid inflammation while avoiding systemic toxicities.

Dexamethasone is widely used to control cerebral edema and inflammation in glioblastoma, but its benefits are limited by systemic toxicities and adverse prognostic associations. We evaluated local administration via convection-enhanced delivery (CED) to maximize intratumoral anti-inflammatory effects by increasing local corticosteroid exposure while minimizing systemic exposure. In a syngeneic glioma mouse model, continuous intraparenchymal infusion of dexamethasone was well tolerated and associated with a modest but significant survival benefit versus vehicle. Evidence of Long-Distance Aerial Convection of Variola Virus and Implications for Disease Control.

Two distinct phenomena of airborne transmission of variola virus (smallpox) were described in the pre-eradication era-direct respiratory transmission, and a unique phenomenon of transmission over greater distances, referred to as "aerial convection". We conducted an analysis of data obtained from a systematic review following the PRISMA criteria, on the long-distance transmission of smallpox. Of 8179 studies screened, 22 studies of 17 outbreaks were identified-12 had conclusive evidence of aerial convection and five had partially conclusive evidence. Aerial convection was first documented in 1

Convection-Enhanced Delivery of Polymeric Nanoparticles Encapsulating Chemotherapy in Canines with Spontaneous Supratentorial Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Despite aggressive multimodal treatment, survival for patients with glioblastoma remains dismal. One obstacle to improving patient outcomes is the difficulty in delivering adequate therapeutic to the central nervous system due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier. Although direct drug infusion by convection-enhanced delivery (CED) can bypass the blood-brain barrier and facilitate delivery to intracranial tumors, determining the distribution of delivered therapeutic remains problematic. Image guidance is a strategy that can optimize the accuracy of therapeutic delivery. METHO

Influence of an intratumoral cyst on drug distribution by convection-enhanced delivery: case report.

Convection-enhanced delivery (CED) uses positive pressure to induce convective flow of molecules and maximize drug distribution. Concerns have been raised about the effect of cystic structures on uniform drug distribution with CED. The authors describe the case of a patient with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) with a large cyst and examine its effect on drug distribution after CED with a radiolabeled antibody. The patient was treated according to protocol with CED of 124I-8H9 to the pons for nonprogressive DIPG after radiation therapy as part of a Phase I trial (clinical trial regist

Fiberoptic microneedle device facilitates volumetric infusate dispersion during convection-enhanced delivery in the brain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A fiberoptic microneedle device (FMD) was designed and fabricated for the purpose of enhancing the volumetric dispersal of macromolecules delivered to the brain through convection-enhanced delivery (CED) by concurrent delivery of sub-lethal photothermal hyperthermia. This study's objective was to demonstrate enhanced dispersal of fluid tracer molecules through co-delivery of 1,064  nm laser energy in an in vivo rodent model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: FMDs capable of co-delivering fluids and laser energy through a single light-guiding capillary tube were fabricated. FMD

Regional convection-enhanced delivery of gadolinium-labeled albumin in the rat hippocampus in vivo.

Convection-enhanced delivery (CED) has emerged as a promising method of targeted drug delivery for treating central nervous system (CNS) disorders, but the influence of brain structure on infusate distribution is unclear. We have utilized this approach to study extracellular transport and distribution of a contrast agent in the hippocampus, a complex structure susceptible to CNS disorders. The magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agent diethylene triamene penta-acetic acid chelated gadolinium-labeled albumin (Gd-albumin), tagged with Evans blue dye, was directly infused (V(i)=5 microl) into the do

Influence of convective and stratiform precipitation types on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance concentrations in rain.

Atmospheric transport and wet deposition have contributed to the worldwide distribution of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, even in remote areas far from known industrial sources. However, little is known regarding the impact of cloud and precipitation formation dynamics on PFAS transport and wet deposition, nor the range of variability in PFAS concentrations within a closely distributed monitoring network. Precipitation samples were collected from a network of 25 stations in a focused geographic region (the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, USA) f
