Delineation of vagal emetic pathways: intragastric copper sulfate-induced emesis and viral tract tracing in musk shrews.

Signals from the vestibular system, area postrema, and forebrain elicit nausea and vomiting, but gastrointestinal (GI) vagal afferent input arguably plays the most prominent role in defense against food poisoning. It is difficult to determine the contribution of GI vagal afferent input on emesis because various agents (e.g., chemotherapy) often act on multiple sensory pathways. Intragastric copper sulfate (CuSO4) potentially provides a specific vagal emetic stimulus, but its actions are not well defined in musk shrews (Suncus murinus), a primary small animal model used to study emesis. The aim

Evaluation of targeted copper sulfate (CuSO4) application for controlling swimmer's itch at a freshwater recreation site in Michigan.

Swimmer's itch has historically been controlled by applying copper sulfate (CuSO4) to lakes as a way to eliminate snails that serve as the intermediate hosts for swimmer's itch-causing parasites. CuSO4 is still sometimes applied specifically to areas of lakes where swimmer's itch severity is high. It is unclear whether targeted application of chemical molluscicides like CuSO4 is effective for controlling swimmer's itch. Previous research has found that the larval stage of the parasites responsible for swimmer's itch are released from infected snails and are concentrated by onshore and alongsho

Toxic Effects of Imidacloprid, Copper Sulfate, and Their Combinations on Biomolecular and Oxidative/Antioxidant Biomarkers in the Tissues of Oreochromis niloticus.

The wide-ranging use of heavy metals and pesticides worldwide and their irreversible accumulation in aquatic ecosystems is a major concern. As the range of household and agricultural chemicals increases, water pollution is trending from the toxic effects of a single agent to complex agent pollution that threatens aquatic ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pesticides (imidacloprid, IMI) and metals (copper sulfate, CuSO4) on oxidative stress biomarkers, antioxidant enzymes, and biomolecular parameters. The present study on the individual and combined effects of O

[Behavior of the trace elements copper, zinc and manganese in bovine rumen. 1. Trace element content of different fractions of rumen fluid and the effect of copper sulfate administration].

Two adult, rumen-fistulated steers were fed, over four consecutive 3-week periods, Cu-deficient and normal hays with and without copper sulphate supplementation. Their rumen liquor levels of copper, zinc and manganese were determined correspondingly. The rumen liquor samples were split into 3 fractions by way of centrifugation, sodium dodecyl sulphate treatment of the sediment and filtration. The fractionation of the rumen liquor showed copper to be contained mainly in the water-soluble supernatant (68%), whilst zinc and manganese are more strongly linked to the microbial fraction (57 and 46%,

Unusual slow magnetic relaxation in a sulfate-bridged copper(II) complex with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol ligand.

We report an unprecedented one-pot route synthesis and in-depth characterizations of a new binuclear copper(II) complex with the tridentate PAN ligand (1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol). The compound of formula [Cu2(μ-SO4)(PAN)2(H2O)2] was isolated as a highly crystalline material, where the two copper(II) centers are connected by a sulfate bridge. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) combined with UV-Vis spectroscopy confirms a square-pyramidal coordination around each Cu(II) center in both the solid state and solution. Remarkably, magnetic studies revealed an unconventional slow magnetic rel

Copper sulfate and sodium selenite lipid-microencapsulation modifies ruminal microbial fermentation in a dual-flow continuous-culture system.

Undesirable interactions between trace mineral elements and ruminal contents may occur during digestion when mineral salts are supplemented. Antimicrobial effects of copper sulfate (CuSO4) may affect ruminal digestibility of nutrients when fed as a source of copper (Cu), while sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) may be reduced in the rumen to less available forms of selenium (Se). Our objective was to evaluate if protection of CuSO4 and Na2SeO3 by lipid-microencapsulation would induce changes on ruminal microbial fermentation. We used 8 fermentors in a dual-flow continuous-culture system in a 4 × 4 dupl

Participation of manganese-superoxide dismutase in the neuroprotection exerted by copper sulfate against 1-methyl 4-phenylpyridinium neurotoxicity.

Neurodegenerative effects of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+), the main metabolite of the neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) include enhancement of lipid peroxidation in the striatum of mice, associated to overproduction of free radicals. Copper acts as a prosthetic group of several copper-dependent antioxidant enzymes, and we previously showed the neuroprotective effect of CuSO4 pretreatment against the MPP+-induced neurotoxicity. In those studies, acute administration of CuSO4 (2.5 mg/kg) blocked MPP+-induced striatal lipid peroxidation, suggesting the activatio

Effect of Protease Supplementation in Diets with or Without Copper Sulfate and Formaldehyde on the Standardized Digestibility of Amino Acids in Broiler Chickens.

With the growing demand for sustainable and cost-effective poultry production, optimizing nutrient utilization is crucial. Exogenous proteases enhance protein digestibility, reduce nitrogen excretion, and improve feed efficiency, but their interaction with additives like copper sulfate (CuSO4) and formaldehyde remains unclear. This study evaluated the combined effects of protease with these additives on amino acid digestibility, performance, and bone quality in broilers. A total of 500 broilers were assigned to seven dietary treatments, each replicated 10 times (six birds per cage) over 21 day

Liposomal Curcumin Attenuates the Incidence of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and DNA Damage Induced by Copper Sulfate in Rat Liver.

BACKGROUND: Copper is an essential element that is used widely in agriculture as fungicides and insecticides; for example, it is used to control schistosomiasis and as an antiseptic and germicide. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) induces multiorgan dysfunction through the stimulation of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. Despite the numerous pharmacological effects of curcumin (CUR), its pharmacokinetic properties are less promising. Hence, there is an urgent need for novel, effective strategies to attenuate heavy metal toxicity and consequently improve the treatment efficiency. Liposomal cur

Effects of Intraoral, Intracrop, and Intragastric Administration of Copper Sulfate on Vomiting, Retching Behavior, and Nausea-Like Responses in Chicks.

Nausea and vomiting are induced by environmental distress and pain; understanding their etiology can improve animal welfare in modern farm operations. Oral administration of CuSO4 induces nausea and vomiting in some mammalian species and in pigeons. Although oral administration of CuSO4 induces retching in chicks, whether it causes true vomiting or nausea-like responses remains unknown. This study examined whether intraoral, intracrop, and intragastric administrations of CuSO4 induced vomiting, retching, and nausea-like responses in chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus). Food intake, crop emptying

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of rice bran oil extract in copper sulfate-induced inflammation in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Tocotrienols have strong antioxidant properties; however, tocotrienol has not been investigated in detail in aquatic products. In this study, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the tocotrienol-rich fraction from rice bran oil and its potential mechanism were verified in a zebrafish CuSO4 inflammation model. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) stable radical method. The copper chelating activity was determined using the pyrocatechol violet method. Intracellular reactive oxygen species in zebrafish were detected using a

Volunteer blood donors who fail the copper sulfate screening test. What does failure mean, and what should be done?

Volunteers attending blood donor sessions who fail the copper sulfate screening test merit an explanation of why they are considered ineligible to donate. During a 30-month period, 0.24 percent of men and 2.8 percent of women attending blood donor sessions in the northern region of England failed this test. Their hematologic status was determined by performing complete blood counts on a venous blood specimen and measuring ferritin as an indication of iron stores in a representative sample of approximately 10 percent. Normal blood counts were found in some donors, while others had severe degree

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis of copper sulfate-induced hepatotoxicity in Oreochromis niloticus via glutathione depletion and energy metabolic reprogramming.

Copper is a widespread heavy metal pollutant in aquatic ecosystems, but the systemic molecular mechanisms of copper-induced hepatotoxicity in fish remain incompletely understood. Here, we integrated histopathological examination, biochemical assays, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to investigate the hepatotoxic effects of copper sulfate (CuSO₄) exposure in Oreochromis niloticus. CuSO₄ exposure caused typical pathological damage, including hepatocyte swelling, vacuolar degeneration, and pyknosis. Biochemical assays revealed significantly reduced activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ca
