First report of yellow-banded tissue loss disease on coral reefs outside the Arabian/Persian Gulf.

Coral disease is a major cause of coral reef degradation, yet many diseases remain understudied. Yellow-banded tissue loss disease (YBTLD) has a distinct gross lesion morphology and to date has only been reported from the Arabian/Persian Gulf; little else is known about the ecology of the disease. We report on the first occurrence of YBTLD outside of the Arabian/Persian Gulf at 2 sites (Laku Point, Narara Reef) within the Gulf of Kachchh (GoK) located on the northwest coast of India. At Narara Reef, YBTLD was observed at 12 out of 24 transects with an average prevalence of 4.7 ± 1.3%. At Laku

Sunscreens and micro(nano)plastics: Are we aware of these threats to the Egyptian coral reefs?

During a snorkeling trip to Marsa Alam and Hamata (southern Red Sea Riviera, Egypt) I explored the coral reefs and the diverse marine habitats of fish and invertebrate species. The area invites recreational diving and snorkeling, but the beaches are littered with all sorts of solid waste (mainly fragmented plastics). Also, there are no local restrictions on sunscreen use. The development of tourism to the area raises questions about the environmental impact and how its further growth will have on coral reefs. Every year, 1.2 million tourists visit the Red Sea coast (about 3287 tourists per day

Bio-prospecting of coral (Porites lutea) mucus associated bacteria, Palk Bay reefs, Southeast coast of India.

Coral mucus is one of the key localization in the coral holobiont, as this serves as an energy rich substrate for a wide range of abundant, diverse and multifunctional microbiota. However, very little is known about the functional role of bacterial communities in their associations with corals. In the present study, a total of 48 isolates were obtained from Porites lutea wherein the genus of Bacillus sp. and Vibrio sp. were predominant. Bio-prospecting the coral mucus revealed the existence of (10.42%) antagonistic bacteria against the tested bacterial pathogens. Molecular taxonomy (16S rRNA)

Diversity of trypanorhynch metacestodes in teleost fishes from coral reefs off eastern Australia and New Caledonia.

Trypanorhynch metacestodes were examined from teleosts from coral reefs in eastern Australia and from New Caledonia. From over 12,000 fishes examined, 33 named species of trypanorhynchs were recovered as well as three species of tentacularioids which are described but not named. Host-parasite and parasite-host lists are provided, including more than 100 new host records. Lacistorhynchoid and tentacularioid taxa predominated with fewer otobothrioid and gymnorhynchoids. Five species, Callitetrarhynchus gracilis, Floriceps minacanthus, Pseudotobothrium dipsacum, Pseudolacistorhynchus heroniensis

Temporal variations of biofouling assemblages of a coral reef ecosystem during a monsoon period.

Coral reefs are highly biodiverse ecosystems, enriched by a range of biofouling species. Temporal variations in biofouling can affect ecosystem stability, but these diverse coral-associated communities remain underexplored in some regions. In the present study, biofouling assemblages of coral reefs in the Chabahar Bay were investigated during a summer monsoon at three deployment periods. In total, 26 taxa were identified with barnacles and polychaetes being the dominant taxa during the whole study. The coverage percentage was driven mostly by the encrusting taxa such as bryozoans and algae whi

Risk classification of low-lying coral reef islands and their exposure to climate threats.

The bio-physical responses of low-lying coral islands to climate change are of concern. These islands exist across a broad range of bio-physical conditions, and vulnerabilities to rising and warming seas, ocean acidification and increased storminess. We propose a risk-based classification that scores 6 island eco-morphometric attributes and 6 bio-physical ocean/climate conditions from recent open-access data, to assign islands with respect to 5 risk classes (Very Low, Low, Moderate, High and Very High). The potential responses of 56 coral islands in Australia's jurisdiction (Coral Sea, NW Shel

Balloon angioplasty for uncontrollable hypertension caused by coral reef aorta: A case report.

Coral reef aorta is a stenosis of the aorta due to severe calcification. We report the case of a 74-year-old woman with coral reef aorta whose hemodynamics were physiologically similar to those found in patients with renovascular hypertension. The patient had resistant hypertension, refractory edema, and renal dysfunction. Bilateral renal artery stenosis and infrarenal aortic stenosis were suspected after a Doppler ultrasound examination. Evaluation by intravascular ultrasound and pressure wire revealed that the high blood flow caused by infrarenal aortic stenosis derived from the high-flow ve

Concomitant Revascularization Using Ascending Aortic Rerouting in Coral Reef Aortic Syndrome.

Coral reef Aortic Syndrome can result in significant visceral and lower limb ischemia. We present a 72-year-old male with postprandial abdominal pain and intermittent claudication. Computed tomography demonstrated a calcified plaque occluding the thoracoabdominal aorta. Additionally, the celiac axis was stenotic, and the superior mesenteric artery was completely occluded. The origin of the inferior mesenteric artery was aneurysmal. Aortic rerouting from the ascending to the infrarenal aorta was performed. The superior mesenteric artery was reconstructed with a saphenous vein, and the inferior

Investigating functional redundancy versus complementarity in Hawaiian herbivorous coral reef fishes.

Patterns of species resource use provide insight into the functional roles of species and thus their ecological significance within a community. The functional role of herbivorous fishes on coral reefs has been defined through a variety of methods, but from a grazing perspective, less is known about the species-specific preferences of herbivores on different groups of reef algae and the extent of dietary overlap across an herbivore community. Here, we quantified patterns of redundancy and complementarity in a highly diverse community of herbivores at a reef on Maui, Hawaii, USA. First, we trac

Sediment pollution impacts sensory ability and performance of settling coral-reef fish.

Marine organisms are under threat globally from a suite of anthropogenic sources, but the current emphasis on global climate change has deflected the focus from local impacts. While the effect of increased sedimentation on the settlement of coral species is well studied, little is known about the impact on larval fish. Here, the effect of a laterite "red soil" sediment pollutant on settlement behaviour and post-settlement performance of reef fish was tested. In aquarium tests that isolated sensory cues, we found significant olfaction-based avoidance behaviour and disruption of visual cue use i

Surveying Biodiverse Coral Reef Ecosystems Across the Tree of Life With Environmental DNA.

A central challenge in evaluating biodiversity using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is that each primer set has biases resulting in selective amplification of taxonomic diversity. Here we test 11 primer pairs to assess Central Pacific coral reef diversity in the five kingdoms of marine eukaryotes: Chromista, Fungi, Metazoa, Plantae and Protozoa. Zero-width OTUs (ZOTUs) were compared to public sequence databases and resolved to the finest taxonomic rank possible. Across all primers, we recovered 421 distinct taxa from five kingdoms in 35 phyla, comprising 62 classes. The number of taxa

Towards a systematic framework to assess restoration success of interventions in coral reef ecosystems.

An ecosystem is defined as a collection of organisms that move energy within and outside of a system, while sustaining both the system itself and the multiple services that benefit humanity. Ecosystem restoration, then, is ultimately concerned with reviving and maintaining ecosystem processes by repopulating organisms and enhancing the habitat after periods of disturbance or loss. Whether interventions are considered "successful" depends on three criteria: 1) were the goals/outcomes clearly defined before implementing the intervention; 2) did the outcome arise directly from the intervention, a

Introducing a novel 28S rRNA marker for improved assessment of coral reef biodiversity.

Biodiversity monitoring based on DNA metabarcoding depends on primer performance. Here, we develop a new metabarcoding primer pair that targets a ∼318 bp fragment of the 28S rRNA gene that is highly conserved across branches of the tree of life. We apply these novel primers to detect coral reef biodiversity and perform a direct comparison with the most commonly used metabarcoding marker for coral reefs, targeting the cyctochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (DOI 10.1186/1742-9994-10-34). We show that our novel 28S primers detect a broader taxonomic scope of species across phyla and classes wit

The eye's coral reef: toward a planetary-health agenda for ocular-microbiome stewardship.

Coral reefs and the human ocular surface represent ecologically distinct yet structurally comparable microbial ecosystems in which resilience depends on finely regulated host-microbe interactions. In coral reef science, microbial shifts precede visible bleaching and ecosystem collapse, enabling the development of predictive stress indices such as Degree Heating Weeks (DHW). Comparable principles are emerging in host-associated, low-biomass microbiomes, where subtle perturbations may trigger disproportionate functional consequences. Here, we propose a systems-level conceptual framework linking

Spatiotemporal and hydrodynamic influences on microbial and exometabolite dynamics in coral reef and seagrass ecosystems.

Coral reef and seagrass ecosystems provide critical storm protection and economic revenue to tropical coastal communities, and therefore, effective monitoring and restoration strategies are essential. Microorganisms, and the metabolites they produce and consume, are key drivers of coastal ecosystem function. However, microbially mediated metabolite recycling remains poorly understood, limiting its inclusion in conservation and restoration strategies. Here, we examine how seawater exometabolites and microorganisms vary in coastal ecosystems, across spatial and temporal scales and in relation to

Coral restoration: roles of shelter for herbivores and reef state in early recruitment success.

Coral recruitment is crucial for reef recovery, yet our knowledge of recruit and juvenile coral demographics remains limited. To experimentally test whether shelter for herbivores and a healthy reefscape enhance colonization by corals, we deployed cubic-meter concrete modules in both low- and high-shelter configurations at the degraded reef off Waikı¯kı¯ Beach and the relatively healthy and fully protected reef at Hanauma Bay, O'ahu, Hawai'i. Settling corals of three dominant genera (Pocillopora, Montipora, and Porites) were surveyed quarterly to track individual recruitment, survival, and gro

Stentless Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) for the Paravisceral Coral Reef Aorta: A Case Report.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is an obstructive disease characterized by heavy calcification of the paravisceral abdominal aorta, leading to impairment of visceral perfusion and exercise-limiting lower limb claudication. CRA is traditionally treated with open surgery through a retroperitoneal approach. In recent years, percutaneous angioplasty of the abdominal aorta, combined with open cell stenting or more complex stent-graft procedures, has been proposed as a less invasive alternative to open surgery, but the presence of heavy calcifications can be a relevant issue. The availability of the intravas

Increasing microplastic concentrations have nonlinear impacts on the physiology of reef-building corals.

The pollution of marine environments with plastics, particularly microplastic (MP, i.e., plastic particles <5 mm), is a major threat to marine biota, including corals. While the effects of MPs are increasingly well understood, knowledge of how different concentrations of naturally occurring MP mixtures affect reef-building corals is still limited. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the relationship of MP concentrations and their effects on reef-building corals. For this, we exposed two reef-building coral species (Stylophora pistillata and Pocillopora verrucosa) in a 12-week experiment to MPs at
