CTK-like syndrome: Corneal opacity and flattening following sequential intracorneal ring implantation and corneal cross-linking.

PURPOSE: This is a case report of a 31-year-old male patient presenting progressive and markedly asymmetric keratoconus treated with sequential intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation followed by accelerated corneal cross-linking (CXL). OBSERVATIONS: The follow-up after the last procedure revealed a thin, opacified cornea with an unexpected massive flattening of up to 20.3 D. The central flattening attributed to the individual effect of CXL (post-ICRS-implant vs. post-CXL) was 19.1 D. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: This original case reports how CXL followed by ICRS implant may result in

A Rare Form of Corneal Opacity Associated with Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Congenita.

A 13-year-old Japanese female diagnosed with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC) was referred for ophthalmologic evaluation. Examination with slit-lamp and optical coherence tomography revealed bilateral thin cornea with diffuse corneal opacity which was localised at the posterior stromal depth in the central cornea. Unlike the two previously reported cases of diffuse and nodular patterns of corneal opacity in SEDC, the current case exhibited a rare form of corneal opacity. SEDC is one of the type II collagenopathies, characterised by dwarfism because the mutations in COL2A1 prevent

Stabilized triple procedure for management of coexisting corneal opacity and cataract.

We describe a surgical technique combining penetrating keratoplasty and cataract surgery with a secure anterior chamber to manage coexisting corneal opacity and cataract. Lamellar corneal dissection is performed to 80% of the corneal depth to provide sufficient visibility for cataract surgery. Manual small-incision cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation is performed through a frown-shaped scleral tunnel. Subsequently, 4 small penetrating incisions are made along the edge of the trephination mark at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions. A graft is placed on the ophthalmic viscos

Morphological analysis of corneal opacity in Shiba dog with GM1 gangliosidosis.

GM1 gangliosidosis is one of the inherited metabolic lysosomal storage disorders characterized by neurological symptoms caused by beta-galactosidase deficiency and consequent accumulation of GM1 ganglioside in neuronal cells. Shiba dogs affected with GM1 gangliosidosis have been found to suffer from corneal opacity. In our morphological analysis, keratocyte enlargement was induced by abnormal intracellular accumulation of neutral carbohydrates, resulting in the loss of normal arrangement of collagen fibrils in the opaque cornea was found to be associated with the disorder. We therefore conclud

Corneal opacity in canine MPS I. Changes after bone marrow transplantation.

Corneal opacification associated with glycosaminoglycan (GAG) deposition occurs in canine mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-L-iduronidase. In affected dogs corneal lesions appear similar to those in children with the same disease. Transplantation of bone marrow from unaffected littermates was performed in 5 MPS I affected dogs at 5 months of age. In three recipients that became long-term survivors corneal clouding was largely alleviated compared to affected control dogs. In no case, however, did the corneas remain totally clear throughout the course of

SKIN PIGMENTATION AND CORNEAL AND LENS OPACITIES WITH PROLONGED CHLORPROMAZINE THERAPY.

Previously undescribed ocular and dermatologic complications of prolonged chlorpromazine therapy have been noted in 70 patients of a series of many thousands receiving similar therapy. All affected patients were women who had been receiving high doses of chlorpromazine, averaging 500 to 1500 mg. daily, for at least three to five years before the complications became apparent. Skin manifestations consisted of a peculiar purplish pigmentation of the skin of exposed areas of the face, neck and hands, characterized histologically by deposition of material with the staining properties of melanin in

Inaccuracy of intraocular pressure measurement in congenital corneal opacity: three case reports.

BACKGROUND: To report three cases of congenital corneal opacity where intraocular pressure (IOP) readings were high despite the use of multiple anti-glaucoma eye drops and normalized after corneal transplantation. CASE PRESENTATION: Three Korean infants presented with bilateral dense stromal opacification which had been present since birth. IOPs measured by rebound tonometer were high despite administration of multiple anti-glaucoma medications. One eye of each patient underwent penetrating keratoplasty (PK) because corneal opacity impaired visual development. Immediately after PK, IOPs were

Human Corneal Stromal Stem Cell Treatment Reduces Established Opacities in Chronic Corneal Scarring.

Corneal fibrosis, clinically referred to as corneal scarring, disrupts the normal architecture and transparency of the cornea and remains a major cause of visual impairment worldwide. Although corneal transplantation can restore vision, its effectiveness is constrained by limited accessibility, donor tissue shortages, and the risk of allograft rejection. Treatments with human corneal stromal stem cells (hCSSCs) have demonstrated scarless healing in preclinical models of acute corneal injury. Here, we report that hCSSCs also modulated pre-existing corneal opacities. We established a reproducibl

Artificial intelligence derived grading of mustard gas induced corneal injury and opacity.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool in ophthalmology for disease diagnosis and prognosis. However, use of AI for assessing corneal damage due to chemical injury in live rabbits remains lacking. This study aimed to develop an AI-derived clinical classification model for an objective grading of corneal injury and opacity levels in live rabbits following ocular exposure of sulfur mustard (SM). An automated method to grade corneal injury minimizes diagnostic errors and enhances translational application of preclinical research in better human eyecare. SM induced corne

Homozygous mutations in PXDN cause congenital cataract, corneal opacity, and developmental glaucoma.

Anterior segment dysgenesis describes a group of heterogeneous developmental disorders that affect the anterior chamber of the eye and are associated with an increased risk of glaucoma. Here, we report homozygous mutations in peroxidasin (PXDN) in two consanguineous Pakistani families with congenital cataract-microcornea with mild to moderate corneal opacity and in a consanguineous Cambodian family with developmental glaucoma and severe corneal opacification. These results highlight the diverse ocular phenotypes caused by PXDN mutations, which are likely due to differences in genetic backgroun
