Using electroencephalography and electromyography recordings from healthy participants during a visual-depended bimanual coordination task, de Vries and colleagues showed that functional synchronization is important in motor coordination. The authors reported that higher coordination correlated positively with intermuscular synchrony, but correlated negatively with corticomuscular synchrony. They proposed that these two diverse motor systems operate differently depending on task demands. Similar experimental paradigms could identify motor mechanisms in patients with neurological disorders to d

Real-world walking frequently requires pedestrians to maintain proactive inhibition to safely navigate unpredictable environments. While cortical modulations occurring during locomotion under environmental uncertainty are well-established, the specific proactive mechanisms underlying this state of inhibitory anticipation remain unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the behavioral and cortical shifts associated with anticipating a stop during overground walking. Fourteen healthy young adults performed fluent and cautious walking tasks with an expected stop. Cortical activity and trunk acc

Recent findings suggest that specific deficits in neural synchrony and binding may underlie cognitive disturbances in schizophrenia and that key aspects of schizophrenia pathology involve discoordination and disconnection of distributed processes in multiple cortical areas associated with cognitive deficits. In the present study we aimed to investigate the underlying cortical mechanism of disturbed frontal-temporal-central-parietal connectivity in schizophrenia by examination of the synchronization patterns using wavelet phase synchronization index and coherence between all defined couples of

OBJECTIVE: We describe the electroencephalographic (EEG) findings in a 9-year-old girl, who presented with generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus requiring pentobarbital anesthesia, and correlate these findings with clinicoradiologic evidence of a ruptured AVM with hemorrhage into the body of the corpus callosum.
METHODS: EEG analysis accompanied by clinical assessment, CT and MRI scans, and cerebral angiography were performed.
RESULTS: With pentobarbital coma, the EEG showed burst suppression with prominent interhemispheric asynchrony. Suppression epochs >2 s in duration and with ampli

SIGNIFICANCE: This study leverages functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to elucidate optically derived cortical network signatures underlying combined sensory-motor interventions in stroke rehabilitation.
AIM: To characterize the synergistic effects of peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) and bilateral arm training (BAT) on cortical hemodynamics and functional network architecture using fNIRS.
APPROACH: fNIRS signals were acquired from 24 subacute stroke patients. Wavelet amplitude and wavelet phase coherence were employed to quantify task-related hemodynamic activation and inter

Whether phonological deficits in developmental dyslexia are associated with impaired neural sampling of auditory information at either syllabic- or phonemic-rates is still under debate. In addition, whereas neuroanatomical alterations in auditory regions have been documented in dyslexic readers, whether and how these structural anomalies are linked to auditory sampling and reading deficits remains poorly understood. In this study, we measured auditory neural synchronization at different frequencies corresponding to relevant phonological spectral components of speech in children and adults with

Functional network architecture associated with health varies across individuals, limiting neuroimaging sensitivity for detecting early network maladaptations and identifying at-risk individuals. To increase sensitivity, we use slow wave events (SWEs) as neurophysiological markers in EEG-informed fMRI analyses. Neural excitability and network state impact SWE spatiotemporal dynamics. Analyzing simultaneous EEG-fMRI from two healthy cohorts (N = 24), we generated individual SWE-related BOLD maps. We created cohort-level probabilistic maps and derived reference maps revealing consistently engage

Classical receptive fields (cRF) increase in size from the retina to higher visual centers. The present work shows how temporal properties, in particular lateral spike velocity and spike input correlation, can affect cRF size and position without visual experience. We demonstrate how these properties are related to the spatial range of cortical synchronization if Hebbian learning dominates early development. For this, a largely reduced model of two successive levels of the visual cortex is developed (e.g., areas V1 and V2). It consists of retinotopic networks of spiking neurons with constant s

We examined the effects of a sensory trick (SeT) on cortical EEG and globus pallidus (GP) local field potentials in four cervical dystonia patients, two of whom had an effective SeT and two who did not. The application of an effective SeT was associated with bilateral desynchronization in the 6-8 Hz and beta bands in the GP and sensorimotor cortical regions. In contrast, mimicking an SeT led to a worsening of dystonia, which was associated with desynchronization of the beta band and synchronization in the 4-6 Hz range. These preliminary findings suggest a role for 4-8 Hz frequency synchronizat

Hippocampal-dependent memory consolidation during sleep is hypothesized to depend on the synchronization of distributed neuronal ensembles, organized by the hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (SWRs, 80 to 150 Hz), subcortical/cortical slow-wave activity (SWA, 0.5 to 4 Hz), and sleep spindles (SP, 7 to 15 Hz). However, the precise role of these interactions in synchronizing subcortical/cortical neuronal activity is unclear. Here, we leverage intracranial electrophysiological recordings from the human hippocampus, amygdala, and temporal and frontal cortices to examine activity modulation and cross-r

UNLABELLED: Architecture of phase relationships among neural oscillations is central for their functional significance but has remained theoretically poorly understood. We use phenomenological model of delay-coupled oscillators with increasing degree of topological complexity to identify underlying principles by which the spatio-temporal structure of the brain governs the phase lags between oscillatory activity at distant regions. Phase relations and their regions of stability are derived and numerically confirmed for two oscillators and for networks with randomly distributed or clustered bimo

BACKGROUND: Published meta-analyses of resting-state regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) studies of major depressive disorder (MDD) have included patients receiving antidepressants, which might affect brain activity and thus bias the results. To our knowledge, no meta-analysis has investigated regional homogeneity changes in medication-free patients with MDD. Moreover, an association between regional homogeneity and rCBF has been demonstrated in some brain regions in healthy controls. We sought to explore to what extent resting-state rCBF and regional homogeneity changes co-occur in the depres

The capacity of visual attention determines how many visual objects may be perceived at any moment. This capacity can be investigated with multiple object tracking (MOT) tasks, which have shown that it varies greatly between individuals. The neuronal mechanisms underlying capacity limits have remained poorly understood. Phase synchronization of cortical oscillations coordinates neuronal communication within the fronto-parietal attention network and between the visual regions during endogenous visual attention. We tested a hypothesis that attentional capacity is predicted by the strength of pre

High-frequency oscillations in cortical networks have been linked to a variety of cognitive and perceptual processes. They have also been recorded in small cortical slices in vitro, indicating that neuronal synchronization at these frequencies is generated in the local cortical circuit. However, in vitro experiments have hitherto necessitated exogenous pharmacological or electrical stimulation to generate robust synchronized activity in the beta/gamma range. Here, we demonstrate that the isolated cortical microcircuitry generates beta and gamma oscillations spontaneously in the absence of exte

BACKGROUND: Frequent nightmares show signs of hyperarousal in NREM sleep. Nevertheless, idiopathic nightmare disorder is considered a REM parasomnia, but the pathophysiology of REM sleep in relation to frequent nightmares is controversial. Cortical oscillatory activity in REM sleep is largely modulated by phasic and tonic REM periods and seems to be linked to different functions and dysfunctions of REM sleep. Here, we examined cortical activity and functional synchronization in frequent nightmare recallers and healthy controls, during phasic and tonic REM.
METHODS: Frequent nightmare recaller

This study aimed to examine alterations in electroencephalography (EEG) phase synchronization in working memory processing in depressed patients. Sixty-four-channel EEG signals were recorded from 33 depressed patients and 32 healthy controls during a visual n-back task. Alterations in functional connections in the patients were investigated using event-related phase coherence in terms of the phase synchronization index (PSI). Compared with the control subjects, the depressed patients showed a lower task-dependent increase in the PSI of delta, theta, and alpha oscillations in a frontoparietal n

PURPOSE: Wilson's disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by ATP7B mutations, resulting in impaired copper metabolism and progressive neuropsychiatric manifestations. This study investigated spatiotemporal alterations in regional brain activity using static and dynamic resting-state fMRI with regional homogeneity (ReHo), and their relationships with clinical features.
METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were acquired from WD patients and healthy controls (HCs). Static and dynamic ReHo analyses were performed to characterize local synchronization strength and temporal variability o

Parity modulates the way in which women respond to infant's affective cues. It is known that the cognitive processing of mothers is affected by a baby crying; however, little information is available regarding the effect of reproductive and caregiving experience on efficiency in managing babies' emotional stimuli while other tasks are being attended. This study characterized the affective score, cognitive performance, and electroencephalographic correlation (rEEG) between prefrontal and parietal cortices in first- (FM) and second-time mothers (SM) while solving a working memory task (vsWM) and

Synchronization is a central key feature of neural information processing and communication between different brain areas. Disturbance of oscillatory brain rhythms and decreased synchronization have been associated with different disorders including schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether synchronization (in relaxed conditions with no stimuli) between different brain areas within the delta, theta, alpha (alpha1, alpha2), beta (beta1, beta2), and gamma bands is altered in patients with a neurological disorder in order to generate significant cortical enhancements.
