Effects of parental care and overprotection on adolescents' diurnal cortisol profiles.

Parental bonding is a strong determinant of children's health. One of the proposed pathways through which parenting impacts children's health is by altering the functioning of stress response systems. The current study aims to investigate the associations between two types of parental bonding (care and overprotection) and functioning of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (i.e., diurnal cortisol secretion) in a sample of 255 healthy adolescents (46.3% girls; aged 11-14 years). Participants completed the Parental Bonding Instrument and provided eight cortisol samples across two consecutiv

Profiles of risk and resilience, and diurnal cortisol rhythms in Mexican-origin mothers.

OBJECTIVES: To identify distinct profiles based on socioeconomic status (SES), marital status, home and neighborhood environments, and psychological symptoms, in a sample of primarily Mexican-origin mothers, and to examine how these profiles relate to maternal diurnal cortisol. METHODS: Mexican-origin mothers (N = 143) were assessed for their objective (education, income-to-needs ratio) and subjective SES (perceived financial concern), marital status, home chaos, neighborhood environments (cohesion and quality), and maternal depressive symptoms when their child was approximately 6-months old.

Post-awakening cortisol and resilience: unravelling their impact on cognitive decline.

Age-associated cognitive decline is a growing social problem and a major concern for older adults, highlighting the need to identify modifiable factors to mitigate it. The basal functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and, especially, the post-awakening cortisol levels, seems to play a key role in cognitive performance related to functions dependent on the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Regulating these cortisol levels is crucial in this context, and resilience has been recognized as vital for successful aging and cognitive functioning. This study was designed to exam

Daytime Sleepiness, Apnea, Neuroimaging Correlates and Cortisol Dysregulation in a Memory Clinic Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances as well as cortisol hypersecretion are increasingly acknowledged as risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the mechanisms underlying the association, and the interplay with cortisol abnormalities, remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify how self-reported sleep disturbances are associated with structural brain measures and diurnal cortisol dysregulation among memory clinic patients. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study performed at Karolinska University Hospital Memory Clinic, Sweden. PARTICIPANTS: The study was based on 146 memory clini

Abnormal diurnal pattern of cortisol secretion in patients after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Substantial evidence suggests that impairment of the hypothalamus?pituitary system can occur following an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Given that the diurnal cortisol rhythm is primarily controlled by the hypothalamus?pituitary system, this study examined whether changes in diurnal cortisol rhythm occurred after aSAH. Cortisol concentrations were measured in the saliva samples collected from patients after aSAH and other types of cerebral hemorrhage (non-aSAH) in the post-awakening period and at night (21:00?h), and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and diurnal cortisol decli

Childhood trauma and diurnal cortisol disruption in fibromyalgia syndrome.

Adults with fibromyalgia syndrome report high rates of childhood trauma. Neuroendocrine abnormalities have also been noted in this population. Exploratory analyses tested relationships between retrospective reports of childhood trauma and diurnal salivary cortisol patterns among 85 women with fibromyalgia. Subjects with fibromyalgia completed self-reports of childhood physical, sexual and emotional abuse, as well as emotional and physical neglect. Recent major life events, current perceptions of stress, and depressive symptoms were also assessed. Salivary cortisol was collected six times per d

Salivary cortisol levels in persons with and without different anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between several subtypes of anxiety disorders and various cortisol indicators in a large cohort study. Anxiety disorders have been suggested to be linked to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, although results are scarce and inconsistent. No earlier studies have examined consistency of HPA axis findings across several anxiety subtypes and whether associations are state or trait dependent. METHODS: Data are derived from 1427 participants of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety. Three groups were compared: 342 control participants

Parental history of depression and higher basal salivary cortisol in unaffected child and adolescent offspring.

INTRODUCTION: There are contradictory findings regarding the associations of parental depression on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity of their offspring. We aimed to explore the associations of parental depression on the diurnal salivary cortisol profile in their child and adolescent offspring. METHODS: A total of 189 unaffected child and adolescent offspring as determined by structured clinical interview were divided into 3 groups according to their parental history of depression, namely current parental depression (CPD, n = 27), past parental depression (PPD, n = 57), and no

Physical activity and cortisol regulation: A meta-analysis.

Physical activity participation is associated with effective stress coping, indicated by decreases in both physiological stress reactivity and perceived stress. Quantifying the effect of physical activity on the diurnal regulation of one key physiological stress indicator, the stress hormone, cortisol, across studies may demonstrate the extent to which physical activity participation is associated with diurnal HPA axis regulation. We meta-analyzed studies examining relations between physical activity participation and indices of HPA axis regulation: the diurnal cortisol slope and the cortisol

Anxious attachment style and salivary cortisol dysregulation in healthy female children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Attachment style has been linked with basal cortisol secretion in healthy adult women. We investigated whether dysregulation in basal cortisol secretion may be evident in younger healthy females. METHODS: Sixty healthy females aged 9-18 years (mean 14.16, SD ± 2.63 years) participated in the Attachment Style Interview (ASI). Eight saliva samples, synchronised to awakening, were collected per day on two consecutive weekdays to examine the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and the subsequent diurnal decline. RESULTS: Participants exhibiting an anxious attachment style had higher co

Diurnal salivary cortisol is associated with body mass index and waist circumference: the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroendocrine abnormalities, such as activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, are associated with obesity; however, few large-scale population-based studies have examined HPA axis and markers of obesity. We examined the cross-sectional association of the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and diurnal salivary cortisol curve with obesity. DESIGN AND METHODS: The Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Stress Study includes 1,002 White, Hispanic, and Black men and women (mean age 65 ± 9.8 years) who collected up to 18 salivary cortisol samples over 3 days. The relationship between work-related rumination and evening and morning salivary cortisol secretion.

The perseverative cognition hypothesis suggests that worry/ruminative thinking prolongs stress-related physiological activation. This study explored the association of work-related rumination with salivary cortisol sampled at 10 pm and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) the following morning. On a mid-week evening, 108 school teachers completed a small diary about their work-related thoughts and gave a saliva cortisol sample at 10 pm. The following morning, they gave four additional saliva samples: at awakening and at 15, 30 and 45 min after awakening, along with a rating of their anticipat

Nocturnal tissue glycemia is associated with cortisol rise in the morning in young but not in older healthy adults.

Cortisol and vitamin D are known to influence plasma glucose, but their relationship with glycemia, assessed by continuous glucose monitoring, remains unclear for healthy adults. This study compared these relationships between 32 young (26.0 ± 4.8 years) and 25 older (67.3 ± 4.8 years) healthy volunteers. Cortisol was determined at bedtime, awakening, and 30 min (T30) and 60 min (T60) post-awakening. Older adults had higher fasting glucose but lower cortisol concentration at T30 than young adults. In young adults, night- and daytime mean glucose and fasting glucose correlated negatively with c

Abnormal diurnal patterns of salivary α-amylase and cortisol secretion in acute patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: The evidence that the activity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is decreased in acute anorexia nervosa (AN) is not consistent. Therefore, we aimed to assess the SNS basal activity in malnourished AN patients through the measurement of diurnal salivary levels of α-amylase, whose secretion is regulated by the SNS. As secondary aim, we measured also salivary cortisol. METHODS: Eight symptomatic female patients with restrictive AN and eight age-matched healthy women underwent saliva sample collection at awakening and over the day. α-amylase and cortisol were assayed by ELISA me

Differences in cortisol profiles and circadian adjustment time between nurses working night shifts and regular day shifts: A prospective longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the differences in the circadian salivary cortisol profiles between nurses working night shifts and regular day shifts following a slow rotating shift schedule to assess the number of days required for adjusting the circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol levels in nurses working consecutive night shifts and the number of days off required to restore the diurnal circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol levels. METHODS: This was a prospective, longitudinal, parallel-group comparative study. The participants were randomly assigned to night and day-shift groups, and sal

Diurnal dynamics and psychobiological regulation of cell-free mitochondrial and nuclear DNA in human saliva.

Cell-free mitochondrial DNA (cf-mtDNA) has emerged as a dynamic molecular signal responsive to psychological stress and a potential biomarker of stress-related physiological adaptations. While previous work has established the acute stress reactivity of cf-mtDNA in saliva, little is known about its diurnal regulation. In this intensive-sampling study, we characterized the diurnal dynamics of saliva cf-mtDNA across one weekday and one weekend day in healthy adults (N = 25, 52% female, 826 samples). Saliva was collected at awakening, during the first hour post-awakening, and at hourly intervals

Comparison of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal function in treatment resistant unipolar and bipolar depression.

Altered functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been demonstrated in patients with treatment-resistant depression, although studies have often conflated patients with unipolar and bipolar depression. This is problematic given that the two groups often present with opposed neurovegetative symptom patterns. The aim of this study was to test, for the first time, whether post-awakening cortisol, a highly reliable, naturalistic measure of HPA functioning, could distinguish patients with clearly defined treatment-resistant unipolar (TRUD) and bipolar depression (TRBD). Correlations of hair level with salivary level in cortisol and cortisone.

AIMS: Contrary findings exist on the consistency between hair cortisol and salivary cortisol in assessing the basal activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The mismatches in temporal characteristic and the indices of hair and salivary cortisol might be potential reasons for the inconsistency. The aim of this study was to investigate the consistency between hair and salivary levels in cortisol and cortisone by directly examining the correlation between hair level and salivary level with different temporal characteristics (acute, short-term and long-term levels) and reflecting

Experiences of adversity in childhood and adolescence and cortisol in late adolescence.

Early life adversity influences the diurnal cortisol rhythm, yet the relative influence of different characteristics of adversity remains unknown. In this study, we examine how developmental timing (childhood vs. adolescence), severity (major vs. minor), and domain of early life adversity relate to diurnal cortisol rhythms in late adolescence. We assessed adversity retrospectively in early adulthood in a subsample of 236 participants from a longitudinal study of a diverse community sample of suburban adolescents oversampled for high neuroticism. We used multilevel modeling to assess associatio

Enhanced negative feedback sensitivity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis in chronic myogenous facial pain.

UNLABELLED: Dysregulations of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, as a physiological substrate of stress, have been observed in patients with different stress-related and chronic pain disorders. In this study, we investigated possible dysregulations of the HPA axis in patients with masticatory muscles pain. In 20 patients with myogenous facial pain and 20 healthy controls, awakening cortisol responses, i.e.cortisol rise in the first hour after awakening, as well as a short circadian free cortisol profile, i.e. four cortisol samples over 12h during the day, were assessed before and a
