The authors report a case of complicated sepsis caused by nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae biotype gravis in a young immunocompetent female with no predisposing factors. She acquired the infection from her boyfriend, an asymptomatic carrier of nontoxigenic strain. The primary site of infection and subsequent sepsis was not identified. The occurence and importance of carriage and invasive infections caused by nontoxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae are discused.

Extrapharyngeal infections caused by Corynebacterium ulcerans have rarely been reported previously, and diphtheria toxin production has usually not been addressed. The effects of intraperitoneal administration of Corynebacterium parvum on the course of Junin virus infection in mice were investigated. This treatment produced enhanced resistance to the virus infection, evidenced by an increase in both survival times and the proportion of survivors. Corynebacterium bovis is principally a zoonotic pathogen and a causative agent of bovine mastitis. To date, there are only 20 documented cases of C. bovis infection in humans in the literature, and only 6 have involved the eye or adnexal structures. Corynebacterium striatum is often considered a contaminant in blood cultures due to often being found colonizing skin and mucous membranes. This case displays C. striatum infective endocarditis (IE) identified in an immunocompetent patient on a native valve. UNLABELLED: Corynebacterium urealitycum is a gram-positive bacillus, usually found as a colonizer on the skin. However, a pathogenic role has been described in susceptible patients, where it can cause urinary tract infection, nephrolithiasis, pyelitis, and encrusted cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate Corynebacterium striatum as a nosocomial pathogen infecting hard-to-heal peripheral wounds, such as skin wounds, soft tissue abscesses and osteomyelitis.
