BACKGROUND: Underdevelopment of nose and chin in East Asians is quite common. Rhinoplasty and mentoplasty are effective procedures to solve the above-depicted defects and can achieve remarkable cosmetic effects. An autologous costal cartilage graft has become an ideal material for rhinoplasty, especially for revision surgery. However, many problems in the clinical application of costal cartilage remain unresolved. This study is to investigate application strategies of autologous costal cartilage grafts in rhino- and mentoplasty.
METHODS: The methods involved are as follows: application of an

There is controversy over the optimal timing of microtia reconstruction. The eighth costal cartilage, which is used to shape the helix framework, can be one of the key factors determining surgical timing of microtia reconstruction. Nevertheless, it is difficult to predict the length of the eighth costal cartilage preoperatively. The aim of the present study was to suggest clinical predictors of the length of the eighth cartilage by assessing the correlation between the actual length of the eighth cartilage and preoperative measurements of the cartilage length using three-dimensional rib-cage c

IMPORTANCE: Transforming a block of costal cartilage into a complex 3-dimensional framework that reflects the contours of a normal ear or nasal bridge requires the creation of many subtle curves, concavities, and convexities. Thus, specialized instruments for microtia repair and rhinoplasty, with specifically curved sharp blades, are used for delicate carving without the need for excessive force, which can damage the framework. Several challenges are associated with these specialized instruments.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel alternate technique using disposable skin punch biopsy instruments

The aims of rhinoplasty reconstruction include maintaining or augmenting long-term tip projection, restoring rigid dorsal stability, and restoring optimum respiratory function. The methods set forth to obtain these objectives are inherently based on the intrinsic nasal principles at the time of the rhinoplasty. Because of the excellent and consistent results autologous costal cartilage grafts provide when faced with problems such as the traumatic saddle deformity, defects after neoplastic resection, congenital nasal deformities, severe tip weakness or underprojection, rhinoplasty in the ethnic

In order to identify whether the regeneration of costal cartilage is the basis of post-surgical repair of pectus excavatum and thoracic cage remodeling, 151 cases were followed up for 0.25 to 14 years. The main procedures in treatment were 3 steps: To curve the mental strut as a bow, to repair the perichondrium as a tube, and to persist in post-operative therapy. The results showed that regeneration of the costal cartilages appeared 3 months postoperatively in the cases treated by this method. It was concluded that a satisfactory thoracic cage could be remodeled by improving the technique of r

Costal cartilage is often chosen for grafting due to its durability and availability, especially in cases where septal cartilage is insufficient. However, harvesting this cartilage presents challenges, including complications like donor-site pain, infection, and pneumothorax. This study aims to evaluate the advantages of using the Gigli saw for harvesting costal cartilage in rhinoplasty, focusing on minimizing the risk of pneumothorax and reducing surgical time while maintaining graft integrity. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, with a focus on the 6th, 7th, and 8th costal c

BACKGROUND: Although costal cartilage has many uses and is a reliable source of cartilage for rhinoplasty procedures, donor-site complications may arise with conventional harvesting techniques. The present report reports a novel technique of harvesting costal cartilage using a specially designed scalpel and studies the use of the harvested cartilage in the reconstruction of secondary nasal deformities in patients with cleft lips.
METHODS: Ten patients (7 females and 3 males) with nasal deformities secondary to cleft lip underwent rhinoplasty using this new technique at the Department of Oral

INTRODUCTION: Radiography remains limited in costal cartilage injuries, and sonography, CT and MR imaging turns out to be more sensitive in the detection of cartilage injuries. This study aims to determine the frequency of costal cartilage fractures detected in the CT images of the patients with high energy chest trauma and to evaluate the association of costal cartilage fracture with the complications of trauma.
METHODS: The CT images of 93 patients aged 18-91 years with a trauma admitted to the Emergency Department of the State Hospital between February 2019 and June 2019 were studied retro

At our department, the authors performed a periareolar mastopexy and harvested costal cartilage for use in a rhinoplasty through the same periareolar incision. This technique has several advantages compared to the traditional method, including less invasion, minimal chance of a hypertrophic scar and easier postoperative care. However, the location of the incision determines that the fifth costal cartilage is the lowest one accessible. Thus, calcification of the implant material poses a challenge to surgeons. In this case report, the authors present a 25-year-old female with a low-profile nose a

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the technical points and effectiveness of autogenous costal cartilage transplantation in repair of Binder's syndrome.
METHODS: Between June 2012 and June 2017, 8 cases of Binder's syndrome were admitted. There were 3 males and 5 females, aged 16-31 years (mean, 22 years). All patients were conformed to the typical manifestations of Binder's syndrome. The autogenous costal cartilage was harvested and carved into the nasal dorsum graft, nasal column graft, and nasal basement graft. Before and after operation, standard pictures of the anterior view, lateral view, and ba

UNLABELLED: Pectus excavatum (PE) and pectus carinatum (PC) in children are the most common congenital deformities that cause complications in the thoracic organs; however, the role of chondrocytes and cartilage canals in the pathogenesis of these conditions remains unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate qualitative and quantitative changes of cartilage lacunae and canals in the costal cartilages in children with PE and PC compared to those with normal chests.
SUBJECT AND METHODS: Costal cartilages were investigated in 10 children with normal chests (a control group), in 12 children with PE,

PURPOSE: Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is an elusive diagnosis. Previous reports have been single cases or small series. We previously reported a small multicenter review with encouraging early results. We now describe our matured experience.
METHODS: This is a follow-up study of patients with SRS from 2006 to 2015. Included are 5 previously analyzed patients and 25 new patients. Patients were called to review current symptoms, course, and satisfaction.
RESULTS: From 2006 to 2015, 30 patients underwent 38 operations. Eight underwent re-operation. All had reproducible pain localized to the cost

BACKGROUND: Costal cartilage excision is an effective treatment of slipping rib syndrome (SRS), although the diagnosis of SRS may be elusive. We review our experience with SRS in the pediatric patient.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review from 2000 to 2011 of patients presenting with symptoms of SRS before 18 years of age.
RESULTS: Seven patients were identified who were diagnosed with SRS and underwent costal cartilage excision. All patients presented with unilateral chest pain that was exacerbated by activity. Five patients reported a popping or clicking sensation with activity that was

Augmentation rhinoplasty of the Asian nose may be effectively accomplished with alloplastic materials. However, certain circumstances mandate the use of autologous grafts (e.g., dorsal augmentation that exceeds 8 mm and patient intolerance of alloplastic implants). Septal and auricular cartilages are inadequate for dorsal augmentation of the Asian nose. The use of costal cartilage for autologous augmentation in select Asian patients has proven to be a reliable method in more than 500 operative cases during a 10-year period. This study was designed to evaluate the ideal costal cartilage graft f

Poland's syndrome is a rarely encountered congenital deficiency involving chest wall and breast deformity associated with hand anomalies. Chest wall reconstruction is necessary if the bony thorax is involved. We present the use of a homologous preserved costal cartilage for reconstruction of the chest wall in an infant with Poland's syndrome, the use of which provided optimal chest wall stability with a favourable outcome.
