Hemodialysis Acess - A Creative Attitude is Necessary.

Creating and maintaining a functional vascular access (VA) is a critical factor in the survival of a dialysis patient. It implies a creative attitude either to maintain its functionality or to build a new one wherever possible, being it autologous or synthetic. We describe the VA history of a 59 years-old male patient, with extreme obesity, which started in 2012 with failed attempts of VA construction in both forearms until a functional brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in the right upper limb was achieved. However, it required ligation due to severe venous hypertension secondary to

Neural correlates of creative thinking and schizotypy.

Empirical studies indicate a link between creativity and schizotypal personality traits, where individuals who score highly on schizotypy measures also display greater levels of creative behaviour. However, the exact nature of this relationship is not yet clear, with only a few studies examining this association using neuroimaging methods. In the present study, the neural substrates of creative thinking were assessed with a drawing task paradigm in healthy individuals using fMRI. These regions were then statistically correlated with the participants' level of schizotypy as measured by the Oxfo

[Creative work of painters with Alzheimer's disease].

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by progressive cognitive and functional decline. Recently, there have been reports in the medical literature on artists who continued to paint while suffering from Alzheimer's. This article describes the changes that occurred in the work of three artists who suffered from Alzheimer's: William Utermohlen, Carolus Horn and Willem de Kooning. In the case of William Utermohlen (1935-2007), Alzheimer's disease was diagnosed at the age of 61. A series of 15 self-portraits that he painted during the years he suffered from Alzheimer's disease provide a rare opportu

Creative compression treatment in challenging situations.

There are globally accepted insights and country-specific standards, preferences, and traditions regarding compression therapy. Although there is a wide choice of bandaging and compression materials, the use of these materials must be planned to meet individual patient's temporary needs using the most appropriate technique and optimal timing. Even though indications and contraindications exist for elastic and nonelastic materials and techniques, professionals must use the technical advantages of the several systems for the benefit of the patient. Whatever method is chosen, the effectiveness of

The Model of Creative Ability in vocational rehabilitation.

Occupational therapy literature has reported on the concept of motivation in great depth and it is evident that motivation has many constructs. Motivation is seen as a key indicator for success in rehabilitation. When assessing a client's vocational skills and performance, occupational therapists in South Africa have found the Model of Creative Ability to be a useful model to determine the quality and quantity of motivation. This article briefly describes the development of the Model of Creative Ability in South Africa and explains the fundamental concepts and terminology used in the model. Cr

"Looking inward," creativity, and well-being: an SEM analysis of self-reflective rumination and creative self-efficacy as pathways linking self-beliefs in creativity and well-being in college students.

Building on prior evidence linking self-reflective rumination to creativity, and given the well-established association between creativity and well-being, the present cross-sectional study examined associations between self-reflective rumination and self-beliefs in creativity and well-being (SBCW), with specific attention to the potential indirect role of creative self-efficacy. A large sample of Chinese college students (N = 1993) completed validated questionnaires assessing self-reflective rumination, SBCW (encompassing short-term and long-term dimensions), and creative self-efficacy. Creative problem solving in a jumping spider.

Behavioural innovation, a key indicator of advanced cognition, has been well documented across animal taxa and manifests as creative problem-solving. Typical innovators such as apes and corvids can spontaneously solve complex, multi-step tasks individually without prior training. Innovative behaviours in arthropods-honeybees, bumblebees, and ants-are probably underestimated because their innovative behaviours are often considered products of associative learning, group-level processes, or one-step problem-solving. Here, we challenge this view by demonstrating spontaneous, individual-level inno

Observers (and transgressors) prefer creative punishments.

Observers are often dissatisfied with punishments handed down by judges for low-level crimes. This dissatisfaction emerges from a perceived trade-off between deterrence and severity. On the one hand, observers believe that harsher punishments are effective at deterring future criminal activity, but also balk at excessively harsh punishments because of their undue harm on transgressors. On the other hand, observers critique less harsh-and even proportionate-punishments for their inability to deter future crime. This trade-off, we argue, can be resolved when judges look beyond traditional punish

[Neuroscience of creativity or can the ungraspable be captured?].

Creativity is a particularly complex entity that can be best conceptualized along dimensions of opposite polarities. It can simultaneously be considered as a phenomenon that comprises a multitude of processes but also be interpreted as a complex construct which indeed does not have a uniformly accepted definition despite extensive literature on creativity. Creativity researchers of various approaches offer alongside methodological diversity a vast array of paradigms and definitions, leading, on the other hand, to contradictions of results. Nevertheless, the concept of creativity is to be maint

Cooperation Makes a Group be More Creative.

This study investigated how cooperative and competitive interaction modes affect the group creative performance. The participants were recruited as dyads to solve 2 problems either demanding divergent thinking (alternative uses task, AUT) or not (object characteristic task, OCT). The dyads solved 1 of the 2 problems in the cooperative mode and the other in the competitive mode. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-based hyperscanning was used to record their neural activities in the prefrontal and right temporal-parietal junction (r-TPJ) regions. Results revealed the dyads showed high

Frontal lobe neurology and the creative mind.

Concepts from cognitive neuroscience strongly suggest that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a crucial role in the cognitive functions necessary for creative thinking. Functional imaging studies have repeatedly demonstrated the involvement of PFC in creativity tasks. Patient studies have demonstrated that frontal damage due to focal lesions or neurodegenerative diseases are associated with impairments in various creativity tasks. However, against all odds, a series of clinical observations has reported the facilitation of artistic production in patients with neurodegenerative diseases affectin

Handedness and creativity in a sample of homosexual men.

A form concerning handedness, dyslexia, stuttering (self-report), and twinning was included in a study of sexual habits of homosexual men. Questions about interests in music, art, and creative writing were also included. A questionnaire was sent out to male homosexuals. Out of 391 returned forms, 363 were suitable for data processing. Analysis showed 13.9% reported writing with the left hand, 6.5% with stuttering, and 8.6% with dyslexia. The twin incidence was 1.2%. The creativity questions indicated a high music and painting activity. The results confirmed previous studies, showing a left shi

Infusing creativity into a college course: a pilot study.

Creativity is an essential skill which has been undervalued in higher education. Creativity is increasingly important to both educators and employers, yet several obstacles challenge its inclusion in college curriculum, including student and faculty misconceptions, and lack of models of how to integrate creativity into college courses. This pilot study designed and evaluated a creativity-infused version of a traditional college course, implementing numerous evidence-based best practices in fostering creativity from the psychological literature on the subject. Details on creativity activities,

Episodic and semantic memory contributions to imagination and creativity.

The ability to generate novel creative ideas (divergent thinking) is closely linked with our ability to imagine novel future events (episodic simulation). Here, we employed an individual differences approach to examine whether divergent thinking and episodic simulation are differentially associated with episodic and semantic retrieval ability. In response to object word cues, participants generated meanings and definitions (semantic memory), remembered a past event (episodic memory), imagined a novel future event (episodic simulation), or generated novel uses (divergent thinking). Replicating

Neuropsychological insights into creativity in people with Parkinson's disease.

Creativity, the capacity and motivation to produce novel and personally meaningful ideas or behaviors, can be influenced by Parkinson's disease (PD). Non-motor neuropsychological symptoms, such as apathy and negative schizotypy have been linked to reduced creativity, while dopaminergic treatments are associated with increased creative engagement. Building on epidemiological findings investigating changes in creativity, we examined possible drivers of increased and decreased creative activity. In a cross-sectional study, 360 participants with PD completed a questionnaire assessing self-reported

The effect of nature on creativity through mental imagery.

Immersion in nature has been linked to wide-ranging benefits on mental health and cognitive functions, from reducing stress to enhancing creativity. However, a walk in nature is not always feasible, and whether a proxy for nature immersion via a mental walk in nature can elicit the same benefits as a physical walk remains largely unknown. Accordingly, the current study utilized guided imagery to examine whether a mental walk in nature would improve creativity in general and when compared to a mental walk in an urban environment. We implemented a within-subjects design, wherein participants com
