Use of a Rigid Curved Laryngoscope for Observation and Debridement of Degenerated Cricoid Cartilage in Nasogastric Tube Syndrome: A Case Report.

Nasogastric tube syndrome (NGTS) is a complication of NGT placement that can cause sore throat, bilateral vocal cord paralysis, and airway constriction. Although rare, this condition should be known by all physicians because it is sometimes fatal. We report a case of NGTS that was successfully diagnosed and debrided with a rigid curved laryngoscope. A 79-year-old man was referred to our department for evaluation of persistent pharyngeal pain and dysphagia after thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery. He had restricted bilateral vocal fold abduction, and the NGT had been placed for nearly 120 days. A

A pilot study of balloon dilation in an animal model resulting in cricoid cartilage fracture: implications for the stenotic pediatric airway.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic balloon dilation is increasingly popular as primary therapy for infants with subglottic stenosis. We aim to determine the maximum balloon diameter and pressure where no fracture of the cricoid would occur, minimum balloon size and pressures where a gross fracture of the cricoid occurs, and location of these fractures. We tested these objectives by performing balloon dilation in laryngotracheal complexes of eight euthanized adult male New Zealand white rabbits, with airway characteristics similar to a 3- to 9-month-old infant. METHODS: Subglottic airway diameter of each s

Isolated comminuted fracture of the cricoid cartilage and narrowing of the airway after a traumatic blunt injury of the neck: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Blunt trauma to the anterior of the neck may compromise the vital structures like major blood vessels, trachea, larynx, pharynx, thyroid, spine, esophagus, and the cricoid. Laryngeal trauma is rare and accounts for 1% of all neck blunt traumas. Cricoid trauma is also very rare and accounts for half of the laryngeal traumas, and the diagnosis is frequently missed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old man, with blunt neck trauma after being hardly hit by a crane lifting hook, was referred to the Shahid Beheshti Hospital. The patient complained of dysphonia (hoarseness) and dyspnea. The

The Right Internal Jugular at the Cricoid Cartilage Level May Represent the Optimal Central Vein Puncture Site in Pediatric Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Internal jugular vein puncture or cannulation is far more difficult in children compared with adults. Anthropometric measures of the internal jugular vein acquired by two-dimensional ultrasound are useful in the practice of puncture and catheterization. The aim of this study is to measure anthropometric parameters of bilateral internal jugular veins in children and to determine the best puncture site based on these parameters. MATERIALS: A total of 107 pediatric patients undergoing elective operation were included. Ultrasound-visible evaluation of bilateral internal jugular veins w

[Development of the larynx and trachea following division of the cricoid cartilage and segmental resection of the trachea in the growth stage. An animal experiment study].

Laminotomy as described by Réthi, and segmental tracheal resection with end-to-end anastomosis have proved useful in the adult for the treatment of stenoses of the larynx. In children, the question arises why these may interfere with the growth of the larynx and trachea. A vertical split of the cricoid cartilage followed by stabilization of the larynx by the temporary introduction of a Montgomery silicone T-tube was carried out on four kittens aged four to six weeks. A segmental tracheal resection with end-to-end anastomosis was performed on other animals of the same age. When the animals had

[Laryngotracheal resection with tracheoesophageal fistula closure in a patient with post-tracheostomy total cicatricial atresia of the larynx and tracheal stenosis combined with cricoid cartilage fracture].

Treatment of patients with post-intubation (post-tracheostomy) stenotic laryngotracheal lesions combined with tracheoesophageal fistula is the most difficult problem for various specialists. A 20-year-old patient received a severe concomitant injury with necessary prolonged mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy. Decannulation was followed by shortness of breath and cough with discharge of sputum mixed with liquid and food. Post-tracheostomy total cicatricial atresia of the larynx and cervical trachea combined with cricoid cartilage fracture, as well as tracheoesophageal fistula of cervical t

The problem of pediatric laryngotracheal stenosis: a clinical and experimental study on the efficacy of autogenous cartilaginous grafts placed between the vertically divided halves of the posterior lamina of the cricoid cartilage.

Acquired laryngotracheal stenosis is a well-documented complication of endotracheal intubation. Severe acquired laryngotracheal stenosis in children responds to surgical reconstruction, including the use of grafts and stents. The most commonly described graft material is autogenous cartilage, placed in the anterior laryngotracheal complex. The role of autogenous cartilaginous grafts sewn between the divided lamina of the posterior cricoid cartilage is less well established. Several authors report good clinical results using autogenous cartilaginous grafts to the posterior larynx; the single re

Free bipaddled anterolateral thigh flap for simultaneous reconstruction of large larynx and prelaryngeal skin defects after resection of the local recurrent laryngeal cancer invading the cricoid cartilage and prelaryngeal skin: A case report.

RATIONALE: After total or near-total laryngectomy and resection of prelaryngeal skin, laryngeal defects and prelaryngeal skin defects often remain a great challenge for head and neck surgeons when considering simultaneous reconstruction of. In this case report, a free bipaddled anterolateral thigh (ALT) was used for such defects reconstruction. PATIENT CONCERNS: For this 50-year-old male patient whose recurrent tumor invaded the cricoid cartilage and the prelaryngeal skin, supracricoid partial laryngectomy with a cricohyoidepiglottopexy would no longer be an option. However, the patient had a

A multicentre prospective cohort study of the accuracy of conventional landmark technique for cricoid localisation using ultrasound scanning.

Cricoid pressure is employed during rapid sequence induction to reduce the risk of pulmonary aspiration. Correct application of cricoid pressure depends on knowledge of neck anatomy and precise identification of surface landmarks. Inaccurate localisation of the cricoid cartilage during rapid sequence induction risks incomplete oesophageal occlusion, with potential for pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents. It may also compromise the laryngeal view for the anaesthetist. Accurate localisation of the cricoid cartilage therefore has relevance for the safe conduct of rapid sequence induction. We

Fracture of the cricoid as a potential pointer to homicide. A 6-year retrospective study of neck structures fractures in hanging victims.

The distinction of a suicidal hanging from a simulated hanging following a homicidal strangulation is highly challenging. The present study evaluates the fracture of the cricoid cartilage as a potential pointer toward homicide. Despite the numerous studies on neck structures fractures in hanging, this is the first study to concentrate on the cricoid cartilage. Neck structures fractures in all cases of suicidal hanging over a 6-year period were retrospectively reviewed (231 cases) and a comparison with homicidal hangings (4 cases) and homicidal no-hanging strangulations cases (52 cases) was per

Histopathology of congenital subglottic stenosis.

A precise delineation of each laryngeal abnormality is critical to planning rational therapy. Since congenital cricoid cartilage anomalies are easily overlooked, a systematic approach to their identification is as important as a clear concept of their classification. The purpose of this communication is to present the pathologic findings and classification of congenital cricoid cartilage deformities and to summarize updated information derived by the whole organ macrosection technique. The classification of congenital subglottic stenosis is based on study of the English-language literature and

Lateral cricoid cuts as an adjunctive measure to enlarge the stenotic subglottic airway: an anatomic study.

The technique of laryngotracheoplasty, with an anterior approach, with or without a posterior cut, and with or without anterior or posterior cartilage grafts, has been described previously. On occasion, a severely stenotic subglottis or aberrant shape to the cricoid cartilage makes division of the lateral aspects of the cricoid cartilage desirable. In attempting to delineate the relationship of the recurrent laryngeal nerve to proposed lateral cricoid cuts, an anatomic study was conducted. Dissections of neonatal, infant, child and adult larynges and trachea were carried out, with the relative

The anterior cricoid split in puppies.

The acute and long-term effects of the anterior cricoid split on the subglottis of puppies intubated from 7 to 14 days are documented. The anterior cricoid split acutely increased the intralumenal cricoid surface area in puppies with intubation-induced airway injury. An intense inflammatory response with mucosal ulceration and granulation tissue is elicited by 14 days of intubation by using the canine model of induced subglottic stenosis developed by Supance et al. [19]. When animals intubated for 14 days underwent an anterior cricoid split on day 7, the airway appears essentially normal by da

Current role of computed tomography imaging in the evaluation of cartilage invasion by laryngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate thyroid, arytenoid, and cricoid cartilage invasion on computed tomography (CT) imaging in patients undergoing total laryngectomy for both primary and recurrent laryngeal carcinoma. Secondary endpoint was to compare laryngeal cartilage invasion between primary and recurrent tumours. METHODS: Pre-treatment CT of 40 patients who had undergone total laryngectomy was retrospectively evaluated and compared with histology. Focal erosions of thyroid cartilage were accounted for neoplastic invasion of the inner cortex. Full-thickness thyroid cartilage invasion was defined as a
