Malignant hyperthermia crisis during scoliosis surgery in a pediatric cerebral palsy patient: a case of early recognition and successful intervention.

BACKGROUND: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare but life-threatening complication of general anesthesia, characterized by a hypermetabolic response that can lead to severe complications if not managed promptly. Patients with neuromuscular disorders, such as cerebral palsy and neuromuscular scoliosis, may have an increased risk of developing MH due to underlying genetic and physiological factors. Despite its rarity, early recognition and intervention are critical for patient survival. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of MH in a 13-year-old girl with cerebral palsy and neuromuscular scoli

Reflections of caretakers on the process of implementation of life space crisis intervention at a therapeutic centre for youngsters with emotional and behavioural disorders.

Life space crisis intervention (LSCI) is a therapeutic and verbal strategy used to intervene when children are in crisis. It has its roots in the work of Aichorn, Redl, Wineman and Bettelheim, and is part of the milieu-therapeutic tradition. In 2000, LSCI was introduced at the Orthopedagogical Observation and Treatment Centre, a school and day unit for 60 children with emotional and behavioural disorders affiliated with the Department of Orthopedagogy at Ghent University (Belgium). The particular position of orientation towards 'therapeutic environments' in the department's history has encoura

Emotion regulation-targeted interventions initiated during hospitalization for suicidal crisis: a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a leading cause of premature death, with risk peaking around psychiatric hospitalization. Emotion dysregulation (ED) is recognized as a key factor contributing to suicidal ideation and behavior across psychiatric diagnoses. The efficacy of interventions that target ED for suicidality reduction remains unclear, so we aimed to assess these interventions in psychiatric inpatients. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant, PROSPERO-registered (CRD420251140949) systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized and non-randomized trials evaluating interventions targeting em

Impact of an Asynchronous Training for the Early Intervention and Childcare Workforce Addressing the Developmental Impact of the Opioid Crisis on Young Children.

OBJECTIVES: The US opioid epidemic contributes to a growing population of children experiencing neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). A review of the developmental impacts of the opioid crisis highlights that both prenatal exposure to teratogens and ACEs can result in developmental delay and disabilities. Training for the early intervention/early childhood (EI) systems is needed to enable them to meet the needs of this growing population. METHODS: To address this, an IRB-approved online training on best practices for NAS, developmental monitoring and ref

Mobile crisis team intervention to enhance linkage of discharged suicidal emergency department patients to outpatient psychiatric services: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Many suicidal patients treated and released from emergency departments (ED) fail to follow through with subsequent outpatient psychiatric appointments, often presenting back for repeat ED services. Thus, the authors sought to determine whether a mobile crisis team (MCT) intervention would be more effective than standard referral to a hospital-based clinic as a means of establishing near-term clinical contact after ED discharge. This objective was based on the premise that increased attendance at the first outpatient mental health appointment would initiate an ongoing treatment cour

CLINICAL VALIDATION OF ANKRD36 MUTATIONS AS A NOVEL BIOMARKER FOR MONITORING EARLY PROGRESSION AND TIMELY CLINICAL INTERVENTIONS IN BLAST CRISIS CML.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is initiated in the bone marrow due to the chromosomal translocation t(9;22), resulting in the fusion oncogene BCR-ABL. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) targeting BCR-ABL have transformed fatal CML into an almost curable disease. However, TKIs lose efficacy during disease progression, and the mechanism of CML progression remains to be fully understood. Additionally, common molecular biomarkers for CML progression are lacking. Our studies previously detected ANKRD36 (c.1183_1184 delGC and c.1187_1188 dupTT) associated exclusively with advanced phase C

Service users' perspectives on acute, outreach and outpatient psychiatric crisis interventions with and without peer support: results of a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Crisis intervention teams assist individuals in acute mental health crises. If unavailable or situations escalate, the police may be involved, and compulsory admissions may be initiated in case of risk to self or others. - measures often perceived as stigmatizing and traumatizing. Respectful, empathetic interactions can prevent escalation and reduce coercion. Peer support, by individuals with lived experience, can enhance recovery, improve quality of life, and reduce coercive measures. In the city of Bremen, the Crisis Intervention Service (CIS) handles emergencies via mobile teams

Feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions against infectious diseases among crisis-affected populations: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) are a crucial suite of measures to prevent and control infectious disease outbreaks. Despite being particularly important for crisis-affected populations and those living in informal settlements, who typically reside in overcrowded and resource limited settings with inadequate access to healthcare, guidance on NPI implementation rarely takes the specific needs of such populations into account. We therefore conducted a systematic scoping review of the published evidence to describe the landscape of research and identify evidence gaps concernin

Preparing an Intervention to Increase Engagement with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Resource among Community Mental Health Consumers with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

Suicide rates are high among individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) and community mental health (CMH) settings have potential to play a critical role in suicide prevention efforts. Crisis lines, such as the 988 Lifeline, are found to positively impact mental health and suicide outcomes, yet data show utilization rates are low among high-risk individuals, such as those with SSDs. This qualitative study employs community-engaged methods to modify a brief single-session Crisis Line Facilitation (CLF) intervention for individuals with SSDs in CMH to increase the likelihood of eng

A cognitive energy crisis: A systematic review & meta-analysis of effective interventions for pediatric cognitive fatigue post-acquired brain injury.

Acquired Brain Injuries (ABIs) cause long-term disruption to young individuals' development. Persistent cognitive fatigue is a commonly reported sequela following pediatric ABI. Currently, there are no evidence-based interventions targeting cognitive fatigue post-ABI amongst pediatric patients. The current systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to review research on the efficacy of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for cognitive fatigue following pediatric ABI. The review searched terms through relevant databases (including Medline, PsychInfo, Embase, Cinahl and Scopus),

Supporting healthy weight in times of crisis: results of a one-year community health worker-led intervention among food (in)secure low-income Latinas.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a major health crisis, one that left the US healthcare system overburdened and with persisting health disparities between certain groups. A group that was and remains disproportionately affected is low-income Latino women (Latinas), especially those with food insecurity. Community health worker (CHW)-led interventions have been successful at improving the results of interventions among disadvantaged populations but their efficacy during times of crisis is not clear. Our purpose was to assess the one-year effects of an intervention for low-income ov

Disruptions and adaptations of an urban nutrition intervention delivering essential services for women and children during a major health system crisis in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Systematic crises may disrupt well-designed nutrition interventions. Continuing services requires understanding the intervention paths that have been disrupted and adapting as crises permit. Alive & Thrive developed an intervention to integrate nutrition services into urban antenatal care services in Dhaka, which started at the onset of COVID-19 and encountered extraordinary disruption of services. We investigated the disruptions and adaptations that occurred to continue the delivery of services for women and children and elucidated how the intervention team made those adaptations. We examined
