Permanent and transient effects of repeated preweaning stress on social and sexual behaviors of rats.

We have reported that exposure of preweaning male and female rats to a model of unpredictable mild physical stressors (Neo-A) can decrease the behavioral and hormonal responses to acute and chronic stress as adults. In this paper we have analyzed the effect of Neo-A on development of social behaviors, including aggressiveness, social dominance, and sexual behavior in adulthood. The subjects were divided into two groups: Neo-A (daily exposed to unpredictable mild stresses- from day 2 up to day 15 of suckling; n = 30 litters) and controls (C) (undisturbed rats, except for testing, during the sam

From Vulnerability to Resilience: The Process of Becoming a Mother for Women Victims of Early Childhood Sexual Abuse.

For women who experienced sexual abuse during childhood, motherhood represents a period of heightened psychological vulnerability, often reactivating past trauma and influencing the development of the maternal bond. This qualitative study, grounded in an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, explores the experiences of ten women involved in judicial proceedings who had been victims of early sexual abuse. Drawing on their life narratives, the analysis highlights the specific psychological effects of parenthood within trajectories shaped by trauma. Pregnancy, childbirth, and t

Post-weaning isolation promotes food intake and body weight gain in rats that experienced neonatal maternal separation.

Neonatal maternal separation (MS) in rats has been reported to result in permanent dysfunctions of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the development of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors later in life. In this study, we examined the effects of post-weaning social isolation stress on food intake and body weight gain of rats with MS experience. MS was performed daily for 180 min during the first 2 weeks of birth and nonhandled control (NH) pups were left undisturbed. Weanling male pups were caged either in a group of three or singly (social isolation), and then subjected to behavio

Caregiver and care team perspectives of caregiver psychological distress and well-being during critical care hospitalization: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Family caregiver psychological distress during an older adult's critical care hospitalization can compromise their well-being and ability to function in a supportive role for patient recovery. Understanding factors influencing family caregiver distress and well-being during this period is crucial for developing approaches to support caregiver health. We sought to better understand and compare caregiver and care team member perspectives about factors and strategies that affect psychological distress and well-being among family caregivers during a critical care hospitalization. Maternal Psychological Trauma Assessed Prenatally and Offspring Outcomes.

Psychologically traumatic experiences can have long-lasting physical and mental health effects on pregnant people, increasing the risk of adverse pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal outcomes. The effect of maternal psychological trauma, assessed prenatally, on offspring outcomes throughout development is understudied. This secondary analysis of a systematic review investigated the scope of research examining links between prenatally assessed maternal trauma and offspring outcomes to identify areas of focus and those needing further investigation. Of 576 studies identified in the systematic rev

Psychiatric Risk Factors for Postpartum Depression: A Systematic Review.

The perinatal period, due to the many physical, psychological, and social changes in future mothers, may represent a critical phase with an increased risk for mental health. Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the main syndromes that affect around 17 percent of women after pregnancy and in the first months of motherhood. This systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, aimed to identify the main pre-partum psychiatric risk factors that may influence the occurrence and diagnosis of PPD with a focus on the antenatal and clinical history of depression, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsiv

Adolescent drug exposure: A review of evidence for the development of persistent changes in brain function.

Over the past decade, many studies have indicated that adolescence is a critical period of brain development and maturation. The refinement and maturation of the central nervous system over this prolonged period, however, makes the adolescent brain highly susceptible to perturbations from acute and chronic drug exposure. Here we review the preclinical literature addressing the long-term consequences of adolescent exposure to common recreational drugs and drugs-of-abuse. These studies on adolescent exposure to alcohol, nicotine, opioids, cannabinoids and psychostimulant drugs, such as cocaine a

Electrophysiological characterization of cerebellar neurons from adult rats exposed to ethanol during development.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the spontaneous activity of mature rat cerebellar neurons that had been exposed to ethanol (EtOH) during postnatal days 4 to 10, which corresponds to the third trimester in humans. Newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with gastric feeding tubes and were artificially reared from postnatal days 4 to 10 with two different diets. The experimental group received 4.5 g/kg/day of EtOH delivered in a milk solution. Controls received similar feeding with an isocaloric supplement replacing the EtOH. Electrophysiological evaluations were performed after

Interaction of gamma-radiation and methyl mercury during a critical phase of neonatal brain development in mice exacerbates developmental neurobehavioural effects.

In our environment, mammals (including humans) are exposed to various types of ionizing radiation and both persistent and non-persistent toxic chemicals. It is known that ionizing radiation, as well as methyl mercury, can induce neurotoxicological and neurobehavioural effects in mammals. These developmental neurotoxic effects can be seen following exposure during gestation. There is a lack of knowledge concerning the effects and consequences of low-dose exposure during critical phases of perinatal and/or neonatal brain development, and of the combination of ionizing radiation and environmental

Acute versus chronic acoustic deprivation: effects on auditory evoked potentials and seizures in mice.

C57BL/6J mice are not typically susceptible to audiogenic seizures, but temporary conductive hearing loss (via earplugging) can induce susceptibility in these subjects. The present study observed that a 40-dB hearing loss, beginning at 17 days postpartum, requires 2 days before it induces susceptibility to audiogenic seizures. When this hearing loss occurred only between 17 and 21 days postpartum, seizures were maximally severe 1-2 days after earplug removal. The peak-to-peak amplitudes of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) were also maximal at this same time. But mice deprived of acoustic in

The influence of binocular visual deprivation on the development of visual-spatial attention.

This article examines the effects of visual input on the development of attention by comparing normal children to children, all more than 8 years old, who had been treated for bilateral congenital cataracts during infancy. In Experiment 1, patients pushed a button as soon as they detected a target that appeared 100, 400, or 800 msec after a central cue. The cue either validly cued the upcoming location or invalidly cued the wrong location. Patients (n = 16) performed normally at the 100 msec and 400 msec stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA). However, when the cue preceded the target by the 800 msec

Analyzing the relationship between feelings about pregnancy and mother-infant bonding with the onset of maternal psychological distress after childbirth: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Strengthening maternal mental health from early pregnancy is essential. This study investigated the factors affecting the onset of maternal psychological distress at 12 months after childbirth in women who had not experienced it during pregnancy. METHODS: Feelings about pregnancy were assessed using a questionnaire in the first trimester, and maternal mental health was assessed using the 6-Item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) in the first and second/third trimesters and at 12 months after childbirth. Mother-infant bonding was assessed using the Japanese version of Mother

Early psychological intervention for auditory hallucinations: an exploratory study of young people's voices groups.

Twenty to fifty percent of people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia continue to hear voices despite taking neuroleptic medication. Trials of group cognitive behavioral therapy for adults with auditory hallucinations have shown promising results. Auditory hallucinations may be most amenable to psychological intervention during a 3-year critical period after symptom onset. This study evaluates the effectiveness of group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for young people with recent-onset auditory hallucinations (N = 22), using a waiting list control. Outcome measures were administered at four s

Greater improvement in counting Stroop accuracy following a positive interpersonal and life orientation training program: a non-randomized controlled study in Taiwanese adolescents.

Adolescence presents a unique developmental challenge, specifically around inhibitory control (IC), a crucial executive function that, when underdeveloped, strongly predicts negative trajectories like poor academic performance and psychopathology. Our intervention-based study, utilizing the culturally relevant, school-based life skill training, the Positive Interpersonal and Life Orientation Training (PILOT) program, targeted 678 7th-grade students over 12 months to assess its impact on IC and psychological well-being in the PILOT group (n = 404) and the control group (n = 274). Our findings w

The psychological burden of idiopathic adolescent gynecomastia.

BACKGROUND: For a population of adolescents, gynecomastia is a persistent problem. Occurring during a critical period in the formation of self-image and gender identity, this gender-incongruent process may disrupt normal psychological development. This study was designed to identify the prevalence of psychological disturbances in young male patients presenting with symptomatic gynecomastia to determine whether psychological examination should be included as a routine portion of this patient population's treatment. METHODS: From 2002 to 2009, patients aged between 10 and 18 presenting to our i

Maternal separation decreases adult hippocampal cell proliferation and impairs cognitive performance but has little effect on stress sensitivity and anxiety in adult Wistar rats.

Stressful events during childhood are thought to increase the risk for the development of adult psychopathology. A widely used animal model for early life stress is maternal separation (MS), which is thought to affect development and cause alterations in neuroendocrine stress reactivity and emotionality lasting into adulthood. However, results obtained with this paradigm are inconsistent. Here we investigated whether this variation may be related to the type of stressor or the tests used to assess adult stress sensitivity and behavioral performance. Rat pups were exposed to a 3h daily MS proto

A prospective study of the impact of child maltreatment and friend support on psychological distress trajectory: From adolescence to emerging adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Transition into adulthood is a critical developmental period that may be influenced by adverse life events as well as by protective factors. This study aimed at investigating the effect of different forms of child maltreatment experienced prior to age 14 (i.e., sexual abuse, physical abuse and exposure to intimate partner violence), and of friend support at age 14 on the psychological distress trajectory from age 14 to 24. METHODS: Participants were 605 adolescents from the general population involved in a 10-year longitudinal study. Psychological distress was evaluated at ages 14

Mental health assessment of Spanish frontline healthcare workers during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Covid-19 pandemic continues challenging health systems globally, exposing healthcare workers to constant physical and psychological stressors. To date, several studies have already shown the catastrophic impact on the mental health of medical personnel during the early period of the pandemic. Nevertheless, literature evidences the dearth of works that evaluate the effect over time, understanding the pandemic as a sustained extreme stressor. The present study examines the effect of the pandemic on the mental health of Covid-19 frontline healthcare workers at six mo
