Daphniaspora nanhuensis n. gen. n. sp. infecting the intestine of Moina micrura (Crustacea: Moinidae) in China.

We reported a new microsporidium, Daphniaspora nanhuensis n. gen. n. sp., from the intestine of Moina micrura collected from Lake Nanhu in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. Infected daphnids generally appeared to have hypertrophied and opaque intestines under light microscopy. Electron microscopy revealed all developmental stages residing in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. The earliest stages observed were uninucleate meronts with a round nucleus. Multinucleate sporogonial plasmodia developed into uninucleate sporoblasts by rosette-like budding. Mature spores were dumbbell-shaped

On two new species of arboreal crabs from phytotelms in Sarawak, Borneo (Crustacea: Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae: Arachnothelphusa).

Two new species of the gecarcinucid freshwater crab genus Arachnothelphusa are described from the Malaysian state of Sarawak in Borneo; one from Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary and another from Bako National Park. Arachnothelphusa rimba n. sp. is distinctive in possessing very long legs and a male first gonopod which has a cylindrical proximal part of the terminal segment, with the distal part sharply tapering to an acute tip. Arachnothelphusa bako n. sp. is superficially closest to A. kadamaiana from Sabah, but differs markedly by its narrower epistome, and proportionately shorter third max

Effects of heavy metal accumulation on some reproductive characters in Armadillidium granulatum Brandt (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea).

The impact of heavy metal bioaccumulation on reproduction of the isopod Armadillidium granulatum was studied by exposing the animals to food contaminated with various sub-lethal concentrations of cadmium, lead and zinc salts over a period of three weeks. The analysis carried out by atomic absorption spectrometry on whole body and on isolated female and male genital systems highlighted that, although metal's bioaccumulation was always concentration-dependent, it varies considerably depending on the metal (Cd>Zn>Pb) as pointed out by the respective values of the concentration factor. The heavy m

Differential host utilisation by different life history stages of the fish ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus (Crustacea: Branchiura).

In this study we examine differences in the occurrence of life history stages of the destructive fish ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus (L., 1758) on eight fish species (stickleback, rudd, roach, gudgeon, bream, tench, crucian carp and common carp) sampled from a mixed-species recreational fishing lake on nine occasions during late spring and summer. Total numbers ofA. foliaceus, as well as the number of larval, juvenile and adult parasite stages, from each fish were recorded along with the fish species. Lice generally exhibited an aggregated distribution approximating a negative binomial distrib

The cephalothoracic sucker of sea lice (Crustacea: Copepoda: Caligidae): The functional importance of cuticular membrane ultrastructure.

Sea lice adhere to the body surface of host fish with a cephalothoracic sucker. Caligus adheres to this substrate using legs 2 and 3, and the action of cephalothoracic muscles. Lunules, small, paired, anterior sucker-like structures, have a vital function in the initial step of adhering and contain a unique endocuticule containing elements that may behave like active matter and serve as the actuating mechanism. Cuticular membranes bordering the cephalothorax have a unique endocuticule with an undulating dorsal surface and a smooth ventral surface. A high-speed camera revealed that this undulat

Setal descriptions, locations, and abundances: Their impacts on decorating behaviors in the spider crab Libinia (Crustacea: Epialtidae).

The setal abundances and distributions of the spider crab Libinia are examined, using two species. These spider crabs decorate their bodies with environmental materials and camouflage from predators. These decorations attach to hooked setae, but other types setae are prevalent in body regions where decorations occur. Adult crabs undergo a terminal molt and lose the ability to regrow setae. Little is known about setal changes over the lifetime in these crabs and if hooked setae abundance decreases with age, resulting in a loss of camouflage strategy in larger individuals. The objective of this

[Changes in the behaviour of Moina macrocopa (Crustacea: Cladocera) under the influence of Gurleya sp. (Microsporidia: Gurleyidae)].

It is established, that infestation with Gurleya sp. (Microsporidia, Gurleyidae) changes the behaviour of its host Moina macrocopa (Straus, 1820), a crustacean inhabiting pools. Heavily infested host individuals attach to surface film of water before their death by senescence. As a consequence, their dead bodies filled with spores of the parasite adhere to objects dipped in water that probably facilitates the transfer of spores by birds and cattle to other pools. Weakly infested or uninfested individuals drown after the end of their ontogenesis. Distribution of the microsporidian spores by two

Seasonal dynamics of egg laying and egg-laying strategy of the ectoparasite Argulus coregoni (Crustacea: Branchiura).

Substrate preferences, spatial aggregation patterns and seasonal dynamics in the egg laying of ectoparasitic Argulus coregoni were studied at a commercial fish farm in Finland. Pilot experiments showed that A. coregoni females selected specific types of substrates for egg laying. Significantly more A. coregoni eggs were laid on dark substrates than on light ones suggesting the use of visual cues. Therefore, egg-laying plates of dark colour were constructed for further experiments. Most A. coregoni eggs were deposited in locations in shadow and in the deepest water in a 2 m deep farming canal.

IgE reactivity against a cross-reactive allergen in crustacea and mollusca: evidence for tropomyosin as the common allergen.

BACKGROUND: Although cross-reactivity between mollusks and other crustaceans in shrimp-sensitive subjects has been reported, the mechanism of this allergenic cross-reactivity has not been studied in detail. OBJECTIVE: To investigate this cross-reactivity in vitro, we have taken advantage of a complementary DNA that expresses tropomyosin, the immunodominant shrimp allergen. METHODS: Serum IgE from nine patients with known anaphylaxis to shrimp and five normal volunteers were analyzed by immunoblotting against 13 distinct crustaceans and mollusks. As additional antigens, muscle preparations we

A new temporary fish parasitic gnathiid isopod, Elaphognathia alcalai (Crustacea: Isopoda: Gnathiidae), from Philippine coral reefs.

Gnathiid isopods are the most prevalent and ecologically important temporary ectoparasites of coral reef fishes and are important for supporting the functional integrity of coral reefs. Through their role as parasites, gnathiids can influence community dynamics in their ecosystem. The family Gnathiidae constitutes 12 genera, including the genus Elaphognathia that can be distinguished from other genera by the deeply excavated frontal border, dramatic lengthening of the mandibles, and addition of apical cusps in adult males. There are currently 25 known species of Elaphognathia described over a

Comparative genomics of tadpole shrimps (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Notostraca): Dynamic genome evolution against the backdrop of morphological stasis.

This analysis presents five genome assemblies of four Notostraca taxa. Notostraca origin dates to the Permian/Upper Devonian and the extant forms show a striking morphological similarity to fossil taxa. The comparison of sequenced genomes with other Branchiopoda genomes shows that, despite the morphological stasis, Notostraca share a dynamic genome evolution with high turnover for gene families' expansion/contraction and a transposable elements content comparable to other branchiopods. While Notostraca substitutions rate appears similar or lower in comparison to other branchiopods, a subset of

Malacostraca Podophthalmata Britanni 18151875 by William Elford Leach and the history of its fragmented publication (Crustacea: Decapoda).

The present study documents the fragmented publication history of Malacostraca Podophthalmata Britanni by William Elford Leach, illustrated with coloured figures of all the species by James Sowerby. This work was originally proposed to consist of 12 or 14 numbers. One number was to be published every two months between the years 1815 and 1818. Although this was increased to 19 numbers its publication by James Sowerby halted at number 17 in 1820. In that year Leach had a complete nervous breakdown and, although he eventually recovered, he was retired from his post at the British Museum in 1822.
