Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia Is Associated With Increased Mortality Risk in Hospitalizations for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): A National Inpatient Sample Analysis.

Background This study analyzed the incidence, characteristics, and mortality risk associated with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) among hospitalizations for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with lung involvement. Methods Adult hospitalizations from the 2016-2020 nationwide inpatient sample were analyzed using relevant International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes for SLE with lung involvement (M32.13) and COP (J84.116). We compared baseline characteristics of individuals with SLE and COP to those of other lung involvements using Chi-square tests for categorical variables and

A 12-week combination of clarithromycin and prednisone compared to a 24-week prednisone alone treatment in cryptogenic and radiation-induced organizing pneumonia.

Background: Some data suggest that anti-inflammatory macrolides may be effective to treat organizing pneumonia (OP) and prevent relapses, but no formal comparison with prednisone alone is available. To explore this issue, we retrospectively compared the efficacy of a 12-week combined regimen of clarithromycin and prednisone with a 24-week prednisone alone regimen in OP. Methods: A standard 12-week regimen of combined clarithromycin and prednisone was designed for the treatment of cryptogenic or radiation-induced OP, aiming at reducing the cumulated prednisone dose and the relapse rate. Its use

Pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema secondary to amyopathic dermatomyositis with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia in invasive breast cancer: a case report and review of literature.

Amyopathic dermatomyositis (ADM) is recognized as a variant phenotype of dermatomyositis and characterized by typical skin manifestations without evidence of muscular inflammation. While interstitial lung disease (ILD) is occasionally found as one of the lung manifestations in ADM patients, the development of a pneumomediastinum and/or subcutaneous emphysema in this disease entity is one of the extremely rare pulmonary complications. These latter complicated pulmonary manifestations have been usually reported in idiopathic ADM with ILD without any other associated medical conditions. We report

The evaluation of the association between the prevalence and patterns of computed tomography findings of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, and neutrophil/lymphocyte and platelet/lymphocyte ratios.

This study presents new findings based on a large-scale analysis of butterfly genomic sequences. Focusing on species identification through comparative genomics, we define subspecies as populations differentiated to a lesser extent than distinct species ("species in the making"). Additionally, we propose further adjustments to the current butterfly classification. As a result, 3 subgenera, 12 species, and 4 subspecies are described as new. New subgenera are (type species in parenthesis): Hyalaus Grishin, subgen. n. (Papilio epidaus E. Doubleday, 1846) of Eurytides Hübner, [1821] (Papilionidae

Multimodality Appearances of Marginal Zone Lymphoma Masquerading as Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia-serial Chest Radiograph and High-resolution Computed Tomography Appearances: (18F) Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Staging Utility.

Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) is a group of low-grade, indolent, non-Hodgkin lymphomas rarely manifesting in the lungs. A 46-year-old man presenting with shortness of breath and cough was investigated and treated over 10 months for an atypical pattern of lung disease in keeping with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP). Initial lung biopsies were nondiagnostic - repeat sampling eventually showed MZL. Staging whole-body (18F) fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) demonstrated multisystem stage IV disease with intensely avid widespread pulmonary chan

The organizing pneumonias: an update and review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Basic information as well as more recent concepts regarding cryptogenic organizing pneumonia and secondary forms of the disease. RECENT FINDINGS: More recently described and less well recognized illnesses associated with organizing pneumonia, such as organizing pneumonia associated with radiation, are enumerated. In vitro studies from separate laboratories are integrated to create a proposed model of the pathogenesis and repair mechanisms that occur in organizing pneumonias. Using current criteria, we note other interstitial lung processes, in addition to organizing pneumon

Reversed halo sign in pneumocystis pneumonia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The reversed halo sign may sometimes be seen in patients with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, but is rarely associated with other diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case study of a 32-year-old male patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, who had previously been treated with chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A chest X-ray showed bilateral patchy infiltrates. High-resolution computed tomography revealed the reversed halo sign in both upper lobes. The patient was diagnosed with pneumocystis pneumonia, which was successfully treated with sulfamethoxazole trime

Focal organizing pneumonia simulating lung malignancy: treated with prednisolone.

Focal cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (FOP) is a localized form of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP). It is an uncommon clinicopathological entity associated with non-specific symptoms and radiographic findings simulating lung malignancy. Incidence of idiopathic FOP is not known and only reported as case series. Its treatment usually involved surgical resection. Here, we report a case of a 62-year-old female presenting with a history of dyspnoea, persistent paroxysms of dry cough, and low-grade fever of three weeks duration with a solitary consolidation on imaging. Computed tomography-gu

[Two patients with novel influenza A virus (H1N1) pneumonia treated with steroid therapy after an incorrect diagnosis of rapid progressive interstitial pneumonia due to the negative results of a rapid-antigen test].

We encountered 2 patients with novel influenza A (H1N1) pneumonia initially treated with steroid therapy after an incorrect diagnosis of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia and acute interstitial pneumonia, made because of atypical radiological findings and negative rapid antigen test results. After the patients were discharged, we performed reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction tests for the presence of novel influenza A (H1N1); the results were positive, and we established the correct diagnosis of infection by novel influenza A (H1N1) virus pneumonia. Diagnostic clues included radiolo

Secondary organizing pneumonia associated with sertraline: A case report.

Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia is a rare idiopathic interstitial lung disease, with a well-defined clinical-radiological and pathological entity. It may also be secondary to several causes. Rapid clinical and imaging improvement is usually obtained with corticosteroid therapy. We report here, to the best of our knowledge, a unique case of organizing pneumonia associated with Sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, commonly used in antidepressant therapy.

Organizing pneumonia co-existing with carcinoid tumour: complete resolution with bronchoscopic tumour resection.

Organizing pneumonia is a well-known clinical entity resulting in response to noxious stimuli causing lung injury. It is known to occur with infectious disease processes, neoplasms, post lung surgery or radiation therapy and when idiopathic, is called cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. We present an unusual case of a 48-year-old woman who presented with chronic cough and progressive dyspnoea while being on macrolide therapy for Lyme disease. Computerized tomography of chest demonstrated a well-circumscribed nodule in the lingula and bilateral central ground glass opacities. Transbronchial biops

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole induced eosinophilic pneumonia: A case report.

We report herein a case of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) induced eosinophilic pneumonia in a 27-year-old woman with radiological features of bilateral nonsegmental airspace consolidation resembling cryptogenic organizing pneumonia at the peripheral lung fields. Organizing pneumonia with eosinophil infiltration in the lung specimens and marked eosinophilia in the peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were observed. Discontinuation of TMP-SMX improved eosinophilia and radiological abnormality, which confirmed the association between the use of TMP-SMX and onset of eosinophi

[Pulmonary tuberculosis with atypical radiological findings in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease].

A 77-year-old-man who had been treated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was referred to our hospital for further examination of a chest X-ray abnormality. The chest X-ray showed consolidation in the right upper and middle lung field. Chest computed tomography showed an airspace consolidation extending subpleurally and nonsegmentally without nodular lesions. The tentative diagnosis was cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. However, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was positive for acid-fast bacilli on smear and also positive for tuberculosis PCR, leading to a diagnosis of tuberculous pn

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis with superimposed organizing pneumonia diagnosed by transbronchial lung cryobiopsy: A case report.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a cystic lung disease characterized by rounded, thin-walled cysts uniformly distributed within normal lung parenchyma on high-resolution chest computed tomography. We report a case of diffuse cystic lung disease with multiple alveolar opacities. Transbronchial lung biopsy showed organizing pneumonia, but LAM cells were not observed. She was diagnosed with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) and treated with corticosteroid therapy. LAM was definitively diagnosed by transbronchial lung cryobiopsy about two years after completing corticosteroid therapy for COP

Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia after bone marrow transplantation, an underrecognized, severe condition.

INTRODUCTION: Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation can lead to various pulmonary complications, including acute fibrinous organizing pneumonia. This condition is rare and presents with aggressive clinical features, distinct from other forms of organizing pneumonia, such as cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. METHOD: A literature review using the PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, and Cochrane databases was conducted to analyze cases of acute fibrinous organizing pneumonia following transplantation focusing on clinical features, therapeutic approaches, and outcomes. CASE REPORT: The case of a 62-year-ol

Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia in a patient with HIV infection and Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia.

Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) is a disease of the small airways that is characterized by deposition of fibrin within the alveolar spaces. The histological pattern is described as a variant of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP). Although COP has been occasionally described in patients with HIV infection, the variant form, AFOP, has not been previously reported in such patients. This report describes an intriguing case of AFOP in a patient with HIV infection and Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia. AFOP was diagnosed after tapering of corticosteroid therapy. This case illustrat

[A case of organizing pneumonia with a reversed halo sign following postoperative irradiation for breast cancer].

A 69-year-old woman received radiation therapy of 50 Gy following surgery for left breast cancer. Eleven months later, chest computed tomography revealed infiltrative shadows with air bronchograms in both lower lung fields and a reversed halo sign in the right lower lobe. Transbronchial lung biopsy revealed polypoid granulation tissue in the terminal air spaces, which was consistent with organizing pneumonia (OP). Prednisolone therapy resolved the radiographic abnormalities. The reversed halo sign was believed to be specific to cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. We reported a case of OP with a

Pulmonary tuberculosis presenting secondary organizing pneumonia with organized polypoid granulation tissue: case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Secondary organizing pneumonia (SOP) is difficult to distinguish from cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) considering various clinical situations. SOP caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is rare; indeed, it has not been reported as a sequela of disseminated tuberculosis. METHODS: From January 2016 to December 2018, we identified six cases of tuberculosis-associated SOP in which Mycobacterium tuberculosis was revealed by microbiological examination; one of the cases was miliary tuberculosis. RESULTS: Of the six cases, 17% were positive for acid fast bacillus (AFB) stain, but 1
