Relationship between tea intake and cedar pollen allergy: a population-based cross-sectional study.

Tea intake has been associated with health benefits, including potential beneficial effects of catechin-containing teas on allergic symptoms. However, large-scale epidemiological studies on the relationship between tea intake and allergic symptoms have been limited. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between the frequency of tea intake and cedar pollen allergy, which is a major cause of seasonal hay fever in Japan, in a large Japanese epidemiological cohort. Data on cedar pollen antibody levels assessed by blood tests and frequency of tea intake (green tea, coarse tea, oolong

Safety profile and immunological response of dual sublingual immunotherapy with house dust mite tablet and Japanese cedar pollen tablet.

BACKGROUND: There have been no studies of dual administration of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) tablets for perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis. This trial (JapicCTI-184014) was conducted to investigate the safety profile and immunological response during dual therapy with SQ house dust mite (HDM) and Japanese cedar pollen (JCP) SLIT tablets. METHODS: This was a multicenter, open-label, randomized trial of 109 Japanese patients with coexisting HDM and JCP allergic rhinitis who had positive tests for HDM- and JCP specific IgE (≥0.7 kU/L). Patients were allocated to receive HDM (N = 54) o

Alleviation of seasonal allergic symptoms with superfine beta-1,3-glucan: a randomized study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of allergic symptoms to cedar pollen has reached epidemic proportions in Japan. Intravenous injection of beta-1,3-glucan in human subjects is known to induce a T(H)1 response, whereas oral uptake does not. OBJECTIVE: It was examined whether orally ingested, superfine dispersed beta-1,3-glucan (SDG), easily absorbed by intestinal mucosa, would alleviate allergic symptoms. METHODS: Allergic patients were orally administrated either SDG (n = 30) or nondispersed beta-1,3-glucan (n = 30), and allergic symptoms were assessed clinically in a double-blind, placebo-controlle

Effects of polysaccharide derived from black currant on relieving clinical symptoms of Japanese cedar pollinosis: a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

We investigated the efficacy of the polysaccharide derived from black currant, named cassis polysaccharide (CAPS), for inhibiting Japanese cedar pollinosis symptoms and improving quality of life by a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 2006. A total of 28 subjects were enrolled in the study, and 10 subjects in each group completed the trial. Although there was no significant difference between the CAPS and placebo group in the weekly mean value of any symptom in the daily symptom diary at any time, a smaller degree of final symptom aggravation was found in the CAPS group. [Comparison of clinical efficacy and cost-quality of antihistamines in early treatment for Japanese cedar pollinosis].

BACKGROUND: Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCP) affects more than 16% of the Japanese population. The estimated direct and indirect costs for this disease totaled 286 billion yen in 1998. In JCP therapy, antihistamines are first line agents. It is well known that starting treatment for JCP with antihistamines before initial day of the pollen scattering can relieve nasal symptom severity during pollen season. The aim of this study is to assess the clinical efficacy and cost-quality of 7 major second-generation antihistamines in early treatment for Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCP). METHODS: Patients

Cedar and cypress pollinosis and allergic rhinitis: quality of life effects of early intervention with leukotriene receptor antagonists.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis involves inflammation of the nasal passages. The use of nasal steroids is generally very effective in providing significant symptom relief. However, compliance for their use is sometimes poor. METHODS: To examine the efficacy of early intervention (before pollen dispersal) with oral cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRA) on pollinosis in patients with allergy to cedar and Japanese cypress pollens, groups of subjects were treated with LTRA or a placebo for 4 weeks at the beginning of the cedar pollen dispersal season. Subsequently, all patients received

The add-on effect of an intranasal antihistamine with an intranasal corticosteroid in Japanese cedar pollinosis.

OBJECTIVE: Combination intranasal drugs with a corticosteroid and antihistamine are available in several countries with better effect than treatments with single agents. However, it remains unclear whether this effect is also seen in Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCP), the most prevalent seasonal allergic rhinitis in Japan. We investigated the effect of an add-on intranasal antihistamine with an intranasal corticosteroid in JCP during the pollen dispersal period. (UMIN000025508) METHODS: We performed a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial from March 1 to 14, 2017. Patients (n = 20

Determining minimal clinically important differences in Japanese cedar/cypress pollinosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Statistically significant results of medical intervention trials are not always clinically meaningful. We sought to estimate the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) (the smallest change in a given endpoint that is meaningful to a patient) during seasonal alteration of Japanese cedar/cypress pollinosis (JCCP). METHODS: Results of a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of JCCP patients conducted between 2008 and 2010 were analyzed using an anchor-based method in which a face scale for Japanese rhinoconjunctivitis quality-of-life questionnaire (JRQLQ) was set as an anc

A novel type of encephalopathy associated with mushroom Sugihiratake ingestion in patients with chronic kidney diseases.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of encephalopathy in uremic patients is multiple. We recently encountered a novel type of encephalopathy which occurred exclusively in patients with chronic kidney diseases after ingestion of a mushroom called Sugihiratake. While the exact etiology of this encephalopathy remained mysterious, we aimed to describe its clinical features. METHODS: A total of 32 patients with chronic kidney diseases who had presented with encephalopathy following ingestion of Sugihiratake were enrolled from seven prefectures in Japan., with 24 of the 32 patients undergoing regular hemodial

[Enhanced Clinical Efficacy of Sublingual Immunotherapy for Japanese Cedar Pollinosis in the Second Year of Treatment].

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is thought to have enhanced efficacy in the second year of treatment. We studied treatment efficacy in both the first and the second years of treatment (2015 and 2016, respectively) in patients who began SLIT in 2014. Methods: We compared 132 patients who underwent SLIT (age, 41.8 ± 17.5 years; male-to-female ratio, 75: 57) and a control group of 56 patients who underwent primary pharmacotherapy (age, 44.9 ± 13.5 years; male-to-female ratio, 25: 31). The study was performed during the peak pollen seasons of 2015 and 2016. Pollen dispersal was similar in 2015 and

The Improvement in Symptoms After Sublingual Immunotherapy for Japanese Cedar Pollinosis Coincided With the Reduction in Nasal Metachromatic and Eosinophilic Cells.

Background and objectivePreviously, it was reported that droplet SLIT in Japanese cedar pollinosis reduced metachromatic cell and eosinophil counts in nasal swabs along with symptom improvement. In this study, it was confirmed that SLIT using tablets also reduces the number of these cells along with symptom improvement, and examined the time course of these effects.MethodsOne hundred twenty-one visits of 57 subjects treated with SLIT occurred in our clinic between January 16 and April 8, 2023 (Jc pollen season). The 57 patients had been receiving SLIT for 0.16 to 7.8 yr, and symptoms were asse

Preliminary study of a challenge test to the patients with Japanese cedar pollinosis using an environmental exposure unit.

OBJECTIVE: Although clinical studies on pollinosis have been performed employing placebo-controlled double-blind comparative and field techniques, accurate evaluation is difficult because the scattering pollen count and climatic conditions vary between years and regions, leading to a bias in the results. Thus, we prepared a pollen challenge test unit (allergen challenge chamber: ACC) which facilitates quantitative pollen challenge at any time, and, so, the acquisition of objective data. METHODS: The control of constant conditions and maintenance of specified pollen concentrations in ACC were

Effect of oral immunotherapy on nasal blockage in experimental allergic rhinitis.

We previously reported that when Japanese cedar pollen was prophylactically p.o. administered before a sensitization stage in a guinea-pig model of allergic rhinitis, pollen-induced nasal blockage was suppressed. In this study, we evaluated whether the oral immunotherapy is also effective when the pollen extract was administered starting from the day when the nasal blockage was clearly induced and whether the effectiveness continued after cessation of the immunotherapy. Sensitized animals were repeatedly challenged by pollen inhalation once every week. After the 7th challenge, the extract was

PS80 interferes with the antiallergic effect of Cry-consensus peptide, a novel recombinant peptide for immunotherapy of Japanese cedar pollinosis, at very low concentration through modulation of Th1/Th2 balance.

Polysorbate 80 (PS80 or Tween-80) is often used as an additive to promote the rapid solubilization of pharmaceuticals in aqueous solutions. We investigated whether coinjection of a minimal amount of PS80 had a modulatory effect on the immunotherapeutic effects of Cry (Cryptomeria)-consensus peptide, a novel peptide developed for the therapeutic management of Japanese cedar pollinosis, using a Cry j 1-sensitized mouse model with experimental allergic rhinitis.
